3/4 time: Mavericks 53-43
A tremendous quarter from Mavs as they piled on 23-12 and they take a lead of 10 into the last Q. It’s been a very controlled performance so far with more gains, less penalties, and less turnovers. Can Swifts fight back?
Mavericks loose ball pickups are impressive.
Oh no, Sarah Klau has gone off now. Looks like she landed awkwardly on O’Shannassy’s foot. Swifts have started the last Q well and whittled the lead back to 7 approaching the halfway mark.
Full time: Mavs win 64-58!!!
They now have as many wins as Lightning and Swifts, the two teams who were many people’s picks going into the season.
This was Mavs’ first win at home, with both their previous wins coming in Queensland. It was a very composed performance too. If anything, they were more dominant than the margin suggests. POTM Kim Jenner was everywhere in defence.
Did Williams get on court for the Thunderbirds today? I saw bits of the game, but she was on the bench. And does RAG have an injury or illness, I was surprised that she didn’t return to court?
It seems like such an injury riddled season in both Australia and NZ.
Also every week I find it so hard to believe Jok couldn’t get a contract for SSN this year.
I agree @Flb re Jok. Everyone goes on about Tracey Neville’s nous as a coach but she nearly missed signing Jok and she’s been the star for them. Without her and the injuries to Cardwell they’d not have won a game. On a different note, why does Cardwell do all the talking in the huddles? Amy Parmenter is captain, let her speak.
Strange coaching decisions all weekend. Reynolds not putting Roo on for the super shot; Obst benching Aiken and Austin at times to leave two rookies in the circle, and very little minutes for Williams; Akle dropping Sam Wallace-Joseph for Whyte. I’m sure injuries played a part in those decisions but some of it was a head scratcher. Swifts are in a tough spot if one of their key imports/marquee players gets cut from the game day squad for a rookie.
Australian Squad to be announced soon. Do we expect Jok to be named?
That’s such an interesting question…and if she is invited does she have to accept or can she decline, leaving herself available for Jamaica once this year is up and she’s no longer an 11th player but a a contracted player (which surely she will be). I’m sure she’d rather play for Jamaica.
I’d be shocked if Jok went to Australia given she’s next in line for a spot with Jamaica, but I always thought them going with Romelda over her for the WC last year could end up being a mistake.
Not to mention the talk around the Diamonds wanting people who are multi-country eligible to 100% commit to them, in relation to Glasgow last year.

@D-fencr I think Jok would have to make herself available and attend if selected or Mavs (and Jok) will be in big trouble. Mavs to lose all competition points for games Jok has played as 11th player?
Would also be strategic for Australia to select Jok knowing she has to accept, and making her unavailable to Jamaica.

I would be very shocked if Jok got named in the Diamonds squad. I just can’t see any Aus coach do that. They’re not desperate.
I don’t think there’s any type of requirement that the 11th player is forced to be apart of the diamonds squad they just had to be eligible for selection
Mavs and Jok should not be in trouble if Jok chooses not to go to diamonds
Also Diamonds shouldn’t be contracting Jok for the sole reason of keeping her away from Jamaica
