I just don’t see how Mavericks will build a decent Victorian fan-base with only two Victorians in the team (one most likely bench warmer most of the time) and even if the last player is Victorian, again most likely a bench player.
Agree with Tully. Minus Neville and Cardwell feel the TBirds slide all the way back to where they were pre premiership.
Still hoping that Cardwell stays with the Tbirds as there hasn’t been an official confirmation from her or the Tbirds
Vixens are already representing Melbourne and already very popular. Would be interesting to see if any Vixens fans take Mavericks as a second team.
Hopefully they have games at the Waverley netball facility, or do training sessions there. That place has thousands of players playing each week, great way to build a fan base.
I hope Cardwell doesn’t leave either.
I wish the Mavericks all the very best luck in the world. I am concerned that the lessons of the Magpies have not been fully learned and I hoped that Netball Victoria would have some sort of minority shareholding in the new SSN franchise. Similar to how Netball NSW owns stakes in both the Giants and Swifts.
Instead they have gone the 100% private equity route again, and as other posters have noted are not attracting enormous amounts of local talent. Partnering with SEN does bring a vast amount of sports marketing and promotion potential and that could be a real x factor as well.
The financial problems of netball are well known but it is a shame there wasn’t perhaps the possibility of a Tasmanian or Canberra team. Or even one from NQ. Speaking broadly I think the Netball Australia model of mixed public and private ownership has now been demonstrated to have been the wrong one. Would have loved to see a Big Bash style model for SSN where Netball Australia owned all of the teams and thus was able to ensure that costs were both controlled and shared evenly across the competition.
The rule differences make it very difficult now, but I do also think that there are significant opportunities being missed in inter Tasman netball. Would TBirds fans turn up to watch a three game series against the ANZ Premiership winning Northern Mystics for the Australasian Championship? I’d like to think they would.
have there been any updates on signing window and contracts?
also surprised we have seen so little talk off charlie bell
Firebirds should be looking to get one of Charlie Bell, Letherbarrow, Fawns surely fawns could be tempted with more court time
Any thoughts about Maddie Hinchliffe? Could she be the 4th middie for Mavericks? She’s a solid player and I’d like to see her with a consistent club, she’s already played for 3.
Bell is a great talent and probably a future Diamond but there’s just so few spots for a GS-only player. There will be loads of retirements from the international players in the next few years and hopefully she finds a contract then.
Dwan on Insta training with Dunkley in Queensland. Obviously they’re close as Dwan is dating Josh Dunkley, but it’s still interesting!
I wouldn’t read too much in to Tippah being in Brisbane, it’s not like I’d expect her to spent her off season hanging out in Adelaide.
I have a good feeling Dwan is staying in Adelaide. I can’t see why she would leave a happy Adelaide thunderbirds that just won a premiership to a tanking not happy firebirds.
I’m the netball season her partner be playing afl anyways so it’s not like she’ll be seeing him that much more if she moves to qld full time.
I also have a feeling Dwan will stay, I think the lack of news is making me buy into the conspiracy theories
Sam Winders replacing Parmenter at Giants.
Also Hay has an ongoing hip injury.
I think the lack of news from the clubs is more to do with the lack of CPA rather than moves not happening.
As an example, Stower, Cosh and Unie have all been de-listed but their clubs have said nothing. Vixens only put something out about Watson once the articles (with Watson quotes) started circulating.
I had expected Giants to add experience to the midcourt to replace Parmenter. Except I thought they might have gone after Simpson. Obviously not.
Wonder where if anywhere Simpson is going? If she has signed a contract with an SSN out clause at Cardiff then which club gave her the out?
Could Simpson be completing the Mavs midcourt so Parmy can play more C (as suggested above maybe she needs to show more versatility to lock down a Diamonds spot?).
Or is Nankivell going to Mavs (as Code did report they were interested in her but nothing since) and Simpson going to TBirds? After all TBirds were using Nankivell as WD by season’s end…
Can’t see Swifts going with Smith and Simpson. Or is Smith’s Planter Fasciitis worse than first reported? Smith is in their rehab group at the moment with Wallace. From memory it took Jen Brady, tennis player close to 18 months to come back from it.
