Code had an article on Nelson a little while back.
Very insightful and I have all my hopes for her she will get a contract.
Nelson will switch onto a bridging visa whilst she waits for a global talent visa that will ultimately and hopefully lead to PR for her. However, her employment will be limited to sport on this visa.
Nelson was studying psychology but had put it on hold as she was financially assisting her mother whilst she completed nursing studies back in Jamaica.
Thunderbirds have just announced that Cardwell is leaving.
Still no idea who’s going to replace her. Ideally a bigger-bodied GS who can still perform well in GA, but that’s a very specific kind of player- Uneeq Palavi would be exactly that.
Nelson would also work, as Tully outlined earlier.
Time’s up! Aussie netballers left unemployed as new deal not reached by deadline
So sad to see Cardwell leave. She could have tried for back to back premierships and then go to the Mavericks in 2025.
As a TBirds fan, Cardwell’s departure makes me worried. I cannot think of a replacement thats upto par with Cardwell.
The only unsigned names that come to mind are:
Uneeq Palavi
Abigail Latu-Meafau
Nyah Allen (most likely snapped by Fever)
Natalie Medhurst?
Kaylia Stanton?
Charlie Hodges? There is also Romelda, Shimona. Potentially Wallam if she ends up leaving.
I wouldn’t be too worried, they’ve won a premiership and just tasted what it’s like to win and hold a lead.
Wallam tipped to stay at firebirds.
Very key they retain Dwan.
Just watched the Ferns press conference and one of the last questions put to Taurua was about Sam Winders playing SSN.
While Giants wasn’t explicitly named, to paraphrase Taurua she said she was happy for Sam, acknowledged she hadn’t signed with an ANZP team and said she would be welcomed back (into the NNZ fold) when/if the opportunity happened.
Taurua referenced her own journey in SSN (and Langmab also) saying at that point in time they needed that extra ‘something’ in their careers.
No mention of Temu.
Cardwell and Neville played massive roles in the TBirds premiership. They may have still won without them but I doubt it. Salary well earned.
They don’t owe TBirds anything.
@Picasso123 Surely this is Nelson’s opportunity?
TBirds should actually see if Borger is interested.
Hear me out.
I know she had next to no court time at Vixens. But that was utterly bizarre. Sure her fitness was probably down as she missed the preseason but she would get that at TBirds.
Strong body that can play GS and GA and mentor Austin. The long term plan is Austin so Borger can mentor her and combine on court with her till Austin is ready to play 60 minutes every week.
Palavi is a similar player but lacks the experience to mentor and give confidence to those around her.
If Dwan leaves then they need a speedy GA. Most suitable there might be Singleton?
@Tully I don’t have access to Code articles however I can imagine Nelson would be at her wits end, especially as she had embarked on study. It must be some sort of sports related visa she has applied for as the Global Talent is for experts/highly experienced in priority “future-focussed” fields.
Anyone know whereabouts of other Jamaican players? Jhaniele is pretty settled in Perth isn’t she, even in off season?
