Q3 was 13-7 to Lightning. While Fran Williams looks better at GD, it was really just great transition by Lightning on several turnovers that created momentum. Yes, Tully’s points I agree with, MiMi has had a crap tournament, I would’ve gone with Miller (Miller not even in the team), but on this occasion it worked. Fretwell was more effective in that tiny pocket at sideline and transverse line to help bring the ball down, there was more space for MiMi and Batcheldor.
ATN found it easier against Cassidy compared to Black, Ava Black is just so tall and remember ATN was originally a goal attack – the turnovers were from Browne and Beckford.
Full time: Lightning 42-40
Great game! The pivotal moment was late in the match where Steph Fretwell was double-teamed, so it was left to Cara Koenen to sink a super shot. This she duly did to give Lightning the lead, then Shanice Beckford missed in reply.
The stadium was very much going for Lightning, possibly just because of the comeback and all the Diamonds in that team. Lots of numbers to crunch, but one thing noticeable was Fretwell pulled it out when it counted, she played 34 mins and shot 10/10 1-pt and 3/3 2-pt. Beckford’s stats were 5/9 1pt and 1/4 2-pt – there’s the difference.
Also Koenen got FIVE REBOUNDS, she’s often very good at this, nice that they can rely on her.
WRT Dehaney, she got zero gains in 22 mins, while Ruth Aryang got 1 intercept in 10 mins. The fundamental thing IMHO is that Katie-Ann commits her defence too much to a lean or a three-foot guard and thinks that’s it, she doesn’t think to react and use fast feet for the offload or next phase.
3v4 Playoff:
1/2 time: Thunderbirds 22-15
A very slow start for Firebirds, down by 9 goals in the first Q. They’ve clawed things back somewhat to be down by 7 at halftime. Garrett has had a great game for Tbirds while youngster Isabelle Shearer has impressed for Firebirds.
Has everyone gone for a loo break? Probably a good time, Firebirds midcourt really aren’t coping, wow I hope Rav and Dunkley and Veve come back. This combo of Burns, Gardner, Fleger is very average. This is a shame because Gardner has had a good weekend overall. It’s not just that, Fbirds have no attacking rebounds from six misses, of course Shamera just gobbles those up.
Granted, the Thunderbirds defence line of Sterling/Garrett/Wilson is brilliant, especially Matilda Garrett. Thunderbirds are a team of premiership players and veteran internationals, and Firebirds without Rav RBD and Dunkley are like their junior team. Wallam is finding it all very hard, but what are you supposed to do?
BTW Horjus has no turnovers and she’s highest on NNP.

I recall having a conversation where I said I thought SCL’s weakness was their midcourt and being laughed at because they got Liz. Yes Liz is a beast but she can’t do it all alone. Mi MI’s change of direction is best at WA and she doesn’t have the consistency to ball carry at C. Black is a WD option only whilst Cassidy’s feeding is poor and well she hasn’t ever really stepped up. So that leaves Mi Mi in WA and Watson in C for me otherwise she is in WA crowding Fretwell anyway. I have found Koenen disappointing this weekend and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Batcheldor snatch her starting position. Defensively they are going to be ferocious.
Fever haven’t covered any of their losses very well really. They have a versatile 10 but other than Fowler, Aryang and ATN the others would struggle to get a starting bib at another club. Such a shame Ruth Aryang isn’t in the 10.
Mavs well obviously injuries have hurt them significantly but too have a versatile 10 but other than Cardwell and Parmy the others don’t have experience of playing 60 minutes of SSN each week. It’s a huge step up. I’ve been a bit disappointed by Fraser this weekend, hopefully just the emotion of being in Sydney. I’d like to see them try Sinclair in GA because she just isn’t doing it in the circle, get in there and take the hard drives. Surely they will take Streutker over Jok?
3/4 time: Tbirds 34-29
Thunderbirds seemingly in control but Firebirds not going away. They won the 3rd Q by 2 and they’re still a chance in this game.
Wallam confirming everyone’s confusion as to why FBs recruited a holding shooter to play for Rav when they have Wallam..??
Full time: Tbirds 50-38
In the end, a commanding win for Thunderbirds who finish third. Just too many errors for Firebirds who faded badly in the last Q. Georgie Horjus had an incredible game for Tbirds, almost racking up 100 NNP in just 40 minutes of action.
This may be common knowledge, but as I don’t have the coverage, what has happened to Weston, Rav, and Petty?
Just being rested I think. I know Rav had surgery in the off season and is hoping to be back for round 1.
Almost time for the grand final – Vixens v Swifts
VIXENS:
GS Garbin
GA Austin
WA Walters
C Mundy
WD Moloney
GD Eddy
GK MannixSWIFTS:
GS Housby
GA Fawns
WA Hadley
C Proud
WD Smith
GD Turner
GK KlauThis should be good.
Mundy is looking so strong physically. She looks like she would give Price a run in the strength department.
1/4 time: 11-11
And just like that, Housby nails a super shot to tie things up at 1/4 time after Vixens had been on top for most of the quarter. Now, changes galore for the second quarter!
