Margin got as low as 5 before the Diamonds pushed it back out.
Rudi Ellis makes her debut! Who would have thought this would have happened a year ago.
Really disappointed with the English defence – often had their heads down and were so cautious. I also think there were some lazy passes, even from experienced players like Cardwell.
Loving the Garbin/Austin interplays. Only an instinctive defensive pair, such as Watson/Burger, could potentially rattle them.
Full time: AUS 70-57
The Roses fought all the way and had a real crack, but the Diamonds were just too strong tonight. The defence, led by POTM Sarah Klau, kept the pressure on, and whenever they created the turnover, Austin and Garbin were ready to capitalise.
That’s some really impressive shooting stats from both teams.
Besides from the 3rd quarter, I feel Englands midcourt let them down in both defence and attack. Both of their book-ends played as good as they were allowed or serviced. I did like Carter at C. However, whoever they put in WA, has to really stand up.Great team effort from the Diamonds. I thought Klau and Aryang really put the Roses on the back foot early and Austin and Garbin had the ball on a string. Hadley had a great game and Watson played to her usual high standard. It will be interesting to see how the Roses adjust for game 2.
I honestly didn’t think Ellis would get any games time this series considering she was a late invitee then squad member, congrats to her. I really hope we get to see Horjus & Ervin on Sunday in Sydney

Unreal.
The only one left on the bench to try stop her was Sharni— Cathrine Tuivaiti (@CatTuivaiti) September 19, 2024
She has a point. But can’t take anything away from Klau too.
5 turnovers from Garbin – I guess that’s a consideration? It was Klau/Aryang that won those turnovers back.
Honestly I would have given POTM to Austin, but I’m fine with Klau getting it, she was a workhorse and it was good to see her stand up in absence of Bruce/Weston.
Also might be controversial but I note that Klau had her best game of 2024 playing with a different GD than she does at Swifts. She was pretty disappointing in SSN this year (so many penalties!), I wonder if she’d be better off exploring other opportunities like Lizzy Watson has.
I totally agree Re: Klau at Swifts. This isn’t the first time she has performed well with Aryang, they have a good understanding.
The issue at Swifts is that other teams and coaches have worked the Turner/Klau combo out. Klau was left to cover too much at the back, hence the penalties. Turner was out of play a lot as well, requiring Klau to do extra work.
Klau would be a good pick up for Firebirds, Giants, Mavs and possibly Vixens/Fever in 2026.
Also agree that Austin was the unsung hero last night!
Squad update 📰
Having been available for the Australia Series only, Eleanor Cardwell has been medically ruled out for the remaining two games with an injury. pic.twitter.com/6skvrD4t7l

I did wonder if something was up with Cardwell watching last night, it was not her usual standard of performance
