      Congratulations Roses.

I think Taurua used that game very wisely overall. 2 debuts, decent courttime for certain players to show their wares.

I’d expect Souness to rejoin the squad game 2.

Ekenasio needs to get that volume up. That’s actually quite pitiful stats from her.

That was a great first match.

For the ferns, I think everyone played really well. I disagree about Ekenasio’s shooting volume. I think there were definitely a few forced passes in to Nweke, but Eke was needed out front due to our middies being smothered out and that allowed the 1 on 1 for Nweke which she won almost every time except for when the ball was too low. WA is the main problem for the ferns. Poi was feeding well but her timing on her movement to receive the ball was frustrating. She moved too soon and was running around too much with the defender in tow. Both Cobden and Allison played well on her to take her out. COB’s drive and feed was great, but i think the first match nerves may have got to her, with a few bad passes. I would start COB in WA next time because she showed more potential. Gordon needs to remain in C for the whole game. She was brilliant.

Roses played so well, considering they’ve just finished a series in Australia. I think Pearson is a better WA than Joseph. I think Williams played quite well in GK but they may need to try someone else (may be Harvey?) as the balls were going in to Nweke too easily for majority of that match. Shooting duo played solid and so accurate despite Jackson applying enormous pressure. Well done to the roses on the win – definitely deserved it

              one word: Toeava.

Can’t remember the last time so many balls didn’t get to Nweke. Silly flat passes, and not enough respect shown towards Fadoju. Wilson is not the answer to GA back-up, she only shot 2 goals as would of Meturaua in that time on the court, so not sure why volume would be an issue re Meturau if others can get away with it.

Heffernan to C, with that defensive end at the end of the game for the next game. Whitney to WA.

                Well done Roses. 💖💖💖

Wasn’t sure we’d make it to the but…

Tchine shot very well, the best I’ve seen of her all season. I hoped we’d see Pearson at GA but the form Burger showed would have taken her out of the game.

Did anyone notice that when Funmi gained the ball from a 3ft jump, there was silence 🤐. Usually there’re are a few gasps.

@Macleod,I agree, Eke was invisible. IMO however, when she swapped with Wilson she was really missed. I can’t wait to see how Temepara will to develop her GA.

                @FIB,
Sulu was right, thise are long shots for Tchine.

I hoping we’ll see Harvey or Quashie next game. Quashie likes the zone style, Harvey is taller but less experienced.

I’m a netball lightweight compared to some of you way more netball experienced forummers but I was surprised at Williams defense on Nweke given she trains with Fowler. I did think she would have been more effective.
Also, Jury – is she really not giving the correct distance or are the umpires just assuming because her arms are so long that she isn’t. At least one of the calls against her took the best part of 3secs or more to come yet she hadn’t moved. In saying that she does frustrate me because she doesn’t jump, nor hold her foot when leaning in order to balance longer.
Mid court – it’s all been said. Not sold on Heffernan in WD but maybe I missed her work.
But the team looked more promising than I’ve seen in a while. Looking forward to Wednesday.

Decided to watch the roses after they gave the diamonds a run for their money in game 2 of that series. Also I like watching Housby. Good on her for coming over for the nz series. She wasn’t troubled too much by the nz defences, despite several turnovers and she is very comfortable shooting from long. Hope she’s got the legs to play every single minute of every single game though. I guess they will rest her if they take out game two as well.

Tchine is a great find. Not daunted at all.

Underwhelmed by Taurua, as everyone knows I am on here. Far too much emphasis on fitness. Is she trying to win or use the series as a practice run? Wilson not the answer at GA. Poi went missing in action at WA. Toeava, for spells, would have been much better than both Poi and O’Brien, although O’Brien was ok.

Hard to say who will win the next game. Could go either way. It’s about consistency from both the team and coach, especially at the end of the game. I think we can safely say the Ferns aren’t going to take out the diamonds series. Good Nweke is giving it a go in Oz next season…

There’s only so much you can do one-on-one with shooters like Nweke, JFN and RAG. It’s really the work done up the front. That’s where her experience will come into play, orchestrating her defence unit. She also never put her head down, especially in those moments where it looked like the Ferns were going to brake it open. I think their biggest lead was 3? At those moments I thought we’ve got them. But the England defence just kept grinding.

Heffernan did some great things and then at other times seemed a bit MIA. I was most frustrated with her around the circle defence (mainly in that 2nd qtr). Housby was using her middies a lot doing the in-and-out thing. There were too many times Heffernan was doubling up on the C. I was shouting to the screen “GET TO YOUR PLAYER”.

Re Ekenasio: Helen Housby stats, Ekenasio should be similar IMO. Metuarau has better play-making skills than Ekenasio, and if that’s the style DNT wants………….well she has selected the wrong players.
I have no doubt that Ekenasio will bounce back in the next test.

I found Ekenasio very frustrating last night. It seemed so difficult to get the C pass away, mainly because Meels wasn’t a option and was in the circle to often. Heffernan was playing like she does at the Steel, lots of not a lot.
Nweke and her giant step to make sure she is no more than 45cm from the post.

Just thinking Nweke and HH will be playing together next season. Based on game 1 it should make an interesting partnership.

@maryann, TB is right, there’s only so much you can do against a tall shooter, especially if the pass is on point.

@Kwkiwi, I’m glad you decided to watch and liked what you saw.

Personally, I can’t wait for game 2. I think DNT expected the a 121 style but having said the Ferns shouldn’t have struggled against the zone. DNT won’t get caught out again.

I think you’re missing Watson and Amo. Tchine wouldn’t get so much space against Watson and Amo plays a better GA than Wilson and shoots more than Tiana.

@FIB, thanks for the stats about tall shooters on the other thread. I didn’t realise Garbin was only 184. I wonder if DNT has done her homework 🤨🤨

In general I found Ekenasio’s play wanting but in Wilson’s cameos on court you really noticed Ekenasio’s absence.

To echo others I don’t think we’ll see a repeat from Eke in Game 2, but really highlights the opportunity sitting there for the likes of Metuarau, Heffernan and Malesala (which, by the way have we learned more about her 2025 plans?) to be that back-up GA.

Yikes, watching Nweke shooting in the background of Dame N’s interview I’m not surprised she has recurring knee issues. Wide stance, knees rolling in.
