Halfway through the first quarter and NZ leads 8-7 with both sets of defences getting their hands to the ball.

Neil’s had a horror start with three bad passes and a footwork call, plus drawing the eye of the umpire by not returning the ball, but I’m a big fan of hers and I’m sure she’ll settle into the game eventually.

              1/4 time: NZ 16-13

              Nweke 12/15 (80%)
              Ekenasio 4/5 (80%)

              Tchine 9/10 (90%)
              Neil 4/5 (80%)

              Gains: NZ 4-1
              Penalties: ENG 13-11
              Turnovers: ENG 6-5

A mostly even first Q, except for a period where Kelly Jackson was on fire. She has 3 gains already.

Great game, very speedy and good to watch. Souness rolled her ankle and looked like she might come off, but she looks fine now.

That’s a quarter Berri Neil would like to forget- not only did she have a lot of turnovers, but her and Tchine kept crowding into the same space. Props to Mason for winning her first battle today!

Fadoju with an unusually high penalty count, mostly coming from accidental bumps in the goal circle. Ekenasio is playing very well.

England clawed their way back to within 1 but a couple of turnovers and NZ leads by 4 again with 5 minutes left in the 2nd Q.

We’ve got another close one! This is so tight and intense. Feels like it’s going down to the wire.

Late in the 2nd Q, Kimiora Poi came on for Maddy Gordon at C. She remains there for the start of the 3rd Q. NZ 33-29
