Lightning up 34-29 at halftime. Lightning scored 7 of the last 10 goals. Bacheldor and Fretwell working well together
It’s a good contest in Melbourne with Lightning leading Mavericks 34-29 at halftime.
Oops, sorry guys with the Kim Jenner reference. That’s what happens when you copy and paste a team list from last season. Damn it.
A strong 69-59 win for Lightning at John Cain Arena. They won every quarter and beat Mavericks for the first time.
Compared to Frews debut last year, I found Kayla graham wasn’t at the same level as the tbirds players.
McGinnis, just through bibs in the air, never knew she had it in her to take off Moloney.
Kayla graham was a standout, by far the best shooter for the vixens tonight.
Will be interesting to see how they bounce back next week against the giants.Disappointed for the Mavs, lots of coach killing errors list then the game. Palavi did better than Glasgow in the super shot time though, I think she’s much of a likeness to Sasha and it just didn’t work with both of them out there. They were getting in each others spaces
You mean Lily Graham for the Vixens.
Crazy to have a Graham and an Austin on each team.
Congratulations to Liz Watson, who played her 150th National League Match.
The Diamonds’ captain has won numerous honours during her time in the game, including World Cup and Commonwealth Games gold and two Liz Ellis Diamonds.

Some thoughts from the first two games: high penalty counts across the board, looks like players might be struggling to adjust back into the proper season. Looks like super shot accuracy might be steadily improving too.
Thunderbirds: their entire starting lineup were excellent, I couldn’t pick a highlight. And now they’ve got the license to shoot long? They’ll be hard to beat. Not much else to say about them!
Vixens: Caris was very good in her first game, more disruption and impact than Ellis could provide. Eddy is also in amazing form, as many others have pointed out. Graham was great, but sometimes got stuck running up and down the baseline without actually being an option. Austin needs to stop pleading to the umpires.
Lightning: Reynolds can’t seriously expect us to think Fretwell spending 60 minutes in GS is purely tactical, can she? Obviously Steph is nearing the end of her incredible career and we all know she’s had some knee problems, but it’s great to see her out there as Lightning clearly need her- I’m surprised the club didn’t acknowledge that, but they’re not really known for being forthcoming. Batcheldor had an excellent game, shooting the bulk of the goals while running out in GA. Disappointing to see whatever is happening to Koenen’s form, and I’m concerned about Hinchliffe becoming increasingly penalised after a decently clean year last season.Watson is as good as ever, unsurprisingly.
Mavericks: Parmenter was huge defensively and was constantly drawing attention to herself, both positively and negatively. She really needs to be more disciplined though. When Fraser was in C, absolutely nobody was coming to get the centre pass receive; it looked like Lightning had about three extra players! They just seem to have no rhythm as a team, which is understandable with Glasgow coming back, but they need to sort out their CPR and SPR. Agree with the comments that Palavi and Glasgow are too similar to play together at this stage, and the feeders seemed terrified of feeding Jok despite how reliable she is.
Vixens will be fine. They lost by 13 after losing the 2nd quarter by 11. Second half was much improved. They always struggle against TBirds. Last year they lost by 15 and 25 in two games in Adelaide before the GF. Defensively they look better than last year which is surprising as Mannix is a big loss. But last year they struggled to win clean ball. Yesterday they got 8 intercepts with 6 combined to Weston (who answered her critics), Eddy (who should be in the Diamonds squad if she keeps this up) and Caris (who had a nice debut). I still want to see Weston and Eddy together, maybe we will see it against moving circles like SC and Fever. When Austin is beaten the Vixens attack loses it way, she will be fine and probably get player of the match next week. Graham continues to develop nicely and shoots the SS with confidence given them a nice change up there.
TBirds look good. They are favourites but not sure they have as much as depth as last year as I agree with the comments about Kayla Graham.
Sunshine Coast are an interesting one for me. They may well be top 4 but they just look to be missing something. They obviously have huge experience but at the same time that also comes with players coming towards the end of their careers. Mi Mi coming back in will make a big difference.
Mavs… defence remains a big problem.
Will be interesting to watch what happens with Ellis as the season plays out. I didn’t think she was great at TGC whereas Caris has improved across the pre season and can play both positions(whilst GD is a WIP she is definitely better there than Ellis). Mannix is under contract for next season and with Weston growing her GK game as well if she wants to play on she will get a contract so not sure where that leaves Ellis going forward?
@benmac4 – Re Visser. I read a few days ago that as Aiken George was cleared to play Vissers temporary replacement player contract has been downgraded but she will remain in the environment Yes she did give up her English contract to come to Australia. Hopefully she has some financial assistance to remain.
