Test 2:
Full Time: JAM 59-47
In the end, a comfortable win for the Sunshine Girls. South Africa fought all of the way, but not surprisingly, the Jamaican defence was the difference, particularly Latanya Wilson, who was brilliant and awarded the Player of the Match.
JAM:
Jok 35/37 (95%)
Beckford 14/17 (82%)
Dixon 6/6 (100%)
Creary 4/5 (80%)
TOTAL 59/65 (91%)RSA:
Maseko 20/21 (95%)
Streutker 18/21 (86%)
van der Berg 9/9 (100%)
TOTAL 47/51 (92%)My two cents, FWIW, I’ve just found time to watch test two.
Jamaica varied their lineup which not only gave us something new but gave their coaches good headaches. The takeaway from that test is how good Latanya is and that she’s really on top of the netball world at this point. She’s only 23 (I think), golden age ahead for Jamaica. It’s interesting that the Jamaican athletes show both flair and clinical Australian tactics, most noticeably Latanya with her incisive line to the ball but also freakish coverage of backspace. In some moments, it makes me think of Pretorius, Liz Ellis’ favourite freak.
The coverage was better this time, for example there were actual replays, although the focus was very strongly Jamaican and commentators kept calling South African players the same incorrect name, for example, as far as I can tell Visser started at GD and moved to GK but was called Retief at GK. I must admit I was confused and I find it hard to know who is who from this distance.
Van Wyk (SA GD) has impressed me, and Nketsa (C). Maseko (GA) we can take as read as being brilliant. I think Chawane as captain is so good because her turnovers (WA) are low and she’s experienced and a steadying influence. I remember when she was an irrepressible WD, she’s matured really well. I don’t have any stats, sorry. There were some moments bring the ball through in transition and from defence to circle edge that were poetic. Good mental fitness from SA.
The Jamaican midcourt is always interesting. At this point it’s impossible to decide on WA, Grierson (new player) or Williams (veteran). I think Kadijah (Williams) (let’s face it, she’s been my favourite for years) played better coming off the bench; you can read this as her wanting to prove herself, but for my mind it’s about fitness and timing, Williams is shorter and less speedy but more crafty and creative, if Grierson keeps doing the basics well it’s a good semi-planned switch when they need it. For centre, Adean Thomas nailed it today. Thomas is so reliable, and Crystal Plummer is a wildcard – I guess that’s another swap that coach S-G Henry has to make at the right time.
I thought Jok was better today, and Jamaica overall was more in their groove. Cleary got a debut at GS for about 7 mins, I didn’t see enough to comment, maybe I thought Gordon (test 1) was slightly better with availability, Cleary did shoot with confidence.
Thanks AK! Great work, love reading your summaries 👍
Test 3:
1/4 Time: JAM 14-9
Jok 9/10
Dixon 5/5van der Berg 5/7
Maseko 3/4
Breedt 1/2
Venter 0/3The Jam defence had the SA shooters completely spooked in that first Q. SA was down 10-1 at one stage. Wilson already has 4 gains. Maseko has brought SA back into the game
1/2 Time: JAM 29-19
Jok 20/23
Dixon 5/5
Beckford 4/7van der Berg 9/11
Maseko 9/10
Breedt 1/2
Venter 0/3It’s hard to believe, but Latanya Wilson is having an even better game than Test 2. She has 8 gains to half time. Jok is proving to be a strong target for the Jamaicans.
That’s interesting Ian – I won’t be able to watch this game till later today, but my impression watching the first two games was that the SA shooters seemed remarkably calm and accurate in the face of the Jamaican defenders! I wonder what changed?
3/4 Time: JAM 45-31
Jok 33/36
Beckford 7/10
Dixon 5/5van der Berg 20/21
Maseko 10/11
Breedt 1/2
Venter 0/3Another strong Q from Jamaica although the SA attack is certainly flowing much better now than at the start.
Full Time: JAM 58-47
Jamaica ran out comfortable winners to take the Margaret Beckford Sunshine Series 3-0. South Africa fought hard and in fact won the last quarter, but that was at least partly down to Jamaica giving some of their stars a rest.

Over the series, Latanya Wilson, Shamera Sterling-Humphrey, and Shimona Jok all starred for Jamaica, while Kamogelo Maseko was South Africa’s best.
Nicola Smith was playing well in Test 1, when unfortunately she was injured. The SA defence found it tough from there.
Still haven’t watched game 2, nor todays game.
Interesting that SA managed 47 in all three games, and Jamaica’s shooting stats were pretty similar through all three games as well.
@Amandalouise, the thing was that they started with Venter at GS and Breedt at GA. Venter hadn’t played at all in the first 2 tests and Breedt didn’t have much court time. Venter was particularly off her game and was replaced without scoring a single goal. As I said, the score got to 10-1 at one stage. Once Maseko and van der Berg got together, it was much better. In quarter 1, SA shot 9/16. For the remaining 3 quarters, it was 38/39!
