Listening to a Podcast with Jane Watson earlier and she speaks of moving from canterbury up to Otaki to be closer to her partners family. Wonder if thats retirement or switch of teams…
Otaki is Pulse territory. With Manu’a supposeably returning to AUS technically there is an opening.
Though I think Mason is on the radar to step up. Just my speculation, I know absolutely nothing. Come on Nesian spill some discreet tea.@Baller Some discreet tea for you it is. As always always rumour and nothing confirmed as of yet. Watson was contemplating retirement because they are indeed looking at moving, but I hear she has come to an arrangement. She will be traveling back and forth and playing on a lower-tier contract, practicing with the team only once a week, and then playing for the Tactix.
If rumours are true and Manu is back off to Australia, Sulu retiring, Temu away to aussie and TRHSR probably not coming back. Do we have any young up and coming defenders. Looks like a lot of teams are going to need to fill a lot of spots in the defensive ends.
With a defender shortage, here’s some thoughts;
someone could see if George could entice Geva and see if keen for a year here now that magpies are over, great Mentor for our up and coming defenders etc
plus te aroha Keenan, jo trip, Gail parata, Tania Hoffman all recently returned from VSL, surely could put feelers out.
Some of those young South African defenders could look for a move here for some pre SNN debuts.
??Maybe Kelea Iongi from Swifts? She’s been great in her TP appearances abd she plays for Tonga, so the NZ culture would probably work for her too.
Rather than bring in imports it would be way better for ANZ to use some of their NNL players – whats the point in having a next tier down if you aren’t prepared to use them.
Unfortunately Steel seems to be lacking some forethought as to the possibility Hu will retire and hasn’t really used their other defender(s) much this season.
Up and coming – Stythe (Mystics), Mason (Pulse), Hall (Marvels), Lisa Putt (Stars)
Kate Lloyd could do with more game time, Oceane Maihi will be returning from ACL and might be keen for full games rather than share court time with Mikaere and Tong (can’t remember her married name) assuming neither is retiring.
Then there is Abby Erwood, Sarapheinna Woulf, Taneisha Fifta, Courtney Elliot. These rumours were from about a week ago and may have changed since then. As we know the Steel are possibly looking for a whole new defensive circle depending on whether THSR retires or not. They have signed another shooter to go with Fisher so that means either Tui or Heffernan will be on the move. Mystics have signed a replacement for Monica who didn’t play this season so they will probably be bench warming. Tactix a new bench warming shooter and a midddie who didn’t play this season. Haven’t heard much about the Pulse, the Magic were in talks with quite a few players but I don’t know if they have signed yet. Some high profile Stars players were looking to move but with Tier restrictions, moving teams can be quite difficult unless they are happy to take less money.
Don’t forget Salote Fifita. She’s a born and bred Otago girl and sister of Losa Fifita. Short stint with Steel last year and a national Tongan rep.
*sister of Taneisha Fifita
I hope the Steel don’t loose Tui and Heff with Fisher only coming back from injury they are going to need both of those girls. Or have the signed Tiana back to play with Fisher. Tiana played her best netball at Steel and with a new coach she might have wanted to move.
If the magic can get a good strong shooter and keep Mels they will be in good shape next year.
Muvla officially leaving the Pulse, understandably.
I think Tui and Ekenasio would make a good pairing? Hume perhaps looking for more courttime down south? Just theorizing.
Shame that Temu won’t be at Stars next season, I would have loved to see her and Burley together, especially since I think Burley’s future is at GD.
