What do you think of this idea?
The Diamonds will adopt a new squad leadership approach for the upcoming Constellation Cup with all athletes having the opportunity to lead the team?

While I think it’s important to encourage leadership in the squad, I think having a consistent captain is important. Also I don’t take the selection of being captain lightly, to lead your country is a big thing, not sure I like the idea of four different official captains. I think they could explore the leadership of the squad whilst still naming at least a captain for this tour
Also confused how they will select the captain each game. If you’re captain one day and then not the next, that’s a lot of adjusting for players and would be interesting to see how it affects game performance. Does it put extra pressure on the day you’ve been selected captain and lead to a worse performance? Competition should be about bibs not captaincy. Appreciate wanting to bring a different approach but this feels a bit too much of a rogue move and trying too hard to be deliberately different.
My instinct is that it’s silly, surely you could appoint a captain for at least the whole series. However when I think about it as a (past) player, if you were relatively senior and were captain or vice captain of your club, why shouldn’t you be given a chance to show what you can do for Australia? Examples of this would be Bruce, Watson, Weston.
The other thing of course is it makes it easier to not have Bassett captain, and even not include her in a game-day twelve! That would be much bigger news.
I do like Bassett enough but I also think there are stronger captains out there such as Bruce and Moloney.
Thirdly, an argument for keeping one captain – captains need practise and experience in their role, too. Is there much point in having four different people when that’s a very fleeting exposure to a big role?
“Rather than appoint an on-going captain or leadership group, all athletes within the squad will have the opportunity to lead the team, allowing the new coaching panel and Netball Australia to explore and maximise the group’s leadership potential.”

Id like to see players like Watson Weston Bruce and even Hadley and Simpson step up and show us their leadership capabilities. They’re all players who have at one point or other been touted as the next big thing so the time is now for them to be those go to players. I also agree that constant swapping is weird maybe just have a core leadership group of Basset and the above players and then rotate within that? I do think we need to seriously consider though who will be next in line after Basset so seeing the above players in action as captains now to work out if they’re a good fit is key.
I did have that thought too Andrew about CBass captaining from the bench, which is such a shame because ultimately I’m sure she is on board with just helping the team win.
I’d like to see Hadley, Weston and Watson step up. I really rate Hadley as a leader and is a very consistent and slightly underrated Dianonds player imo. It would be incredibly bold to consider someone like Proud for captaincy of the diamonds just because she is swifts captain when she hasn’t even debuted. Having a new team captain is a great way to continue the best bits of your previous captain and bring your own fresh ideas so surely will need to fall on players who are experienced within the setup.
I actually don’t mind this idea. I think appointing someone short term when the squad is pretty new and not settled might be counterproductive.
Giving several players the opportunity to lead for a game will help with appointing the ongoing captain.
I don’t think it’s a good idea; the game day captain having to settle into being captain as well as concentrate on playing international netball for the first time in over a year.
didnt Laura Geitz have a stinker of a game on her captaincy debut? (Wasn’t she benched?) I recall that later she said she was trying to do too much, not concentrating on her own game. And I loved Laura as Australian captain, and Firebirds Captain and I’m not even a Firebirds fan.
New Diamonds coach Stacey Marinkovich won’t appoint a full-time captain for the series against New Zealand https://www.news.com.au/sport/netball/new-diamonds-coach-stacey-marinkovich-wont-appoint-a-fulltime-captain-for-the-series-against-arch-rivals-new-zealand/news-story/a8ee6d3ea7ab4bd00e295612ec498b44
To me this seems to be a way of ditching Bassett as Captain, probably because she is playing for a NZ team this year.
I can’t see this working well at all.Schmeetle, Geitz did have a stinker in her first game as captain in NZ. And they lost. There were big question marks straight away, people wondering if the right decision was made. She then proceeded to lead Australia to 21 wins in a row.
I actually quite like this. There are a lot of players who I think are strong leaders (like Proud, Hadley, Simpson, Moloney, Weston etc.) who can’t really be given the permanent captain role because their position on court is not guaranteed. I don’t think having a permanent, individual captain is that important when there are so many girls playing at such a similar level. With Bassett it clearly took away from her level. Going into tournament play it might be better to have a smaller group of individuals but at this stage I think it’s great that a lot of players will have the opportunity to lead. It’s a great way to create a closer group as well, which is extra important considering the whole quarantine process and the fact that there are several new faces in the team.
Interesting style.
TBH I thought it was pretty straight forward, on who would be the next captain – Liz Watson.
I understand CBass not retaining it, as she is going to be playing in the NZ comp. Liz Watson, IMO, is a garauntee starting 7 player. Followed closely by Weston. All the other positions are up-for-grabs. -
