Although Jovic had a fantastic rookie year, she will need to back this up next year as a second year player that everyone has had a chance to look at and then will be deserving of inclusion in one of the squads.
Note that everyone else is at least a 2nd year player (even if they first got SSN court time mid way though season 2019), so not only “broke through” but also backed it up. Dwan is the exception – both based on performance demanding it and because of the thin shooting stocks.
I imagine these selections – like for Diamonds – are based on strict guidelines, monitored over a 3 year period.
You can hardly call Manua, Poolman, Scherian and to a lesser extent Stanton “development” options. All except Stanton have been in & now dropped out of Diamonds & Stanton probably had insufficient court time (or form) to warrant selection.
Congratulations to all selected!

Jovic and Fraser are the only two who I think could have been included who weren’t. I think I probably would have had Jovic over Mi Mi but realistically there is so much midcourt depth that it’s splitting straws. Hopefully Fraser sees more court time next year and Jovic isn’t sent to the bench.
Not sure Jovic wasn’t selected for that reason. Dunkley had about 5 minutes for the Vixens so she like Jovic has to back it up next year with opposition having had the chance to study her game. Dwan as well. Didn’t Jovic play every game? So teams did have a chance to play against her once then adapt for the second game. Unlike that Dunkley spent many games on the bench.

Jovic missed a couple of games with concussion, and rotated on/off lots before the double Browne injuries. other than that every game.
I guess someone had to miss out!
I am overall happy with the squad, but wonder how many of them can potentially take the next step and become part of the Diamonds squad in the future. A lot of them are presently bench impact players at best and cant see many of them being in the starting 7 of their teams in the foreseeable future.
That’s such a fair point, I do struggle with seeing some of them as Diamonds players in the near future. Hopefully I’m wrong though and they grab a starting position soon. I really think we need to expand to 10 teams in the next 3 or so years if we can. It will provide more opportunities for players who really shouldn’t be on the bench as much as they are.
Going with the squad size and apparent selection criteria then I still feel Jovic should be there.
However, on reflection and if this squad is a bridge between U 21 and Diamonds then the squad should be halved. Some of these players whilst having had good seasons are no where near the Diamonds. 3 from each third would have been enough.
Glasgow
ATN
Dwan
Cassidy
Parmenter
Nankivell
Eddy
Turner
HinchliffeYeah some of those players will never be Diamonds players. Feel like pretty much every player outside of Diamonds Squad and U21 squad were named.
Initially I thought that the reason 14 were picked was to allow match play, however there is only 1 – GS (Glasgow) and 2 – GAs (ATN and Dwan). I worry about our tall shooting talent across the whole league and would love to see Lee Jones redeveloped in the role, she was a very good junior GS. It is a pity but I do not think that Gooden and Ryde will develop further. I guess the same could be said for up and coming tall mobile GKs. It is a shame O’Shannassy has had Glandular fever, and wonder if she will return, but there is plenty of mid size talent coming through within that position I particulary like Hinchliffe and Lewis , and Garrett has shown glimpses of her potential.
I like the way they refer to it as a development squad rather than Australia A (or B!). This way you can think about the qualities that the chosen players have and therefore what the selectors will be hoping to develop. Of course, with injury and other factors, some like Turner may step up into diamonds but I don’t think of this as a reserve type situation.
It’s like, they’ve seen what Mimi has in natural speed and athleticism and they’ve decided to focus on that and train her up. Rather than her being there as a “reserve WA”. Dunkley therefore, was the confusing one for me and I wonder whether Jovic should be there instead of her? Jovic plays with the speed and agility of Kelsey Browne and will be a great player to develop. I don’t really like Stanton as a player because I think she hasn’t stepped up this year (fever fan here) but I think she’d be good in this team because her potential is great. She needs that potential to be unlocked in another environment if she’s not demonstrating her worth at Fever… But she probably didn’t earn her spot and I agree with her not being there
