This is the first time in a while that there could really be some major change because of retirements in previous years, injuries, pregnancies etc.

Very interested to see what we could be looking at, hopefully not too many discrepancies between what we think and what the selectors go with. I’m expecting at least one unexpected cut and one unexpected inclusion

          Courtney Bruce to be captain.

            My guess

            Koenen, Wood, Austin, Bassett, Philip

Hadley, Watson, Moloney, Parmenter, Price, Anstiss, Simpson

Weston, Mannix, Eddy, Klau, Jenner, Bruce

Personally I’d have Garbin or Dwan instead of Philip but I think Marinkovic will be conservative. Would love to see Proud instead of Anstiss but I expect they’ll use the “we need more WD backup” argument.

I don’t know if Bruce is the ideal captain for Diamonds. Would rather Weston & Simpson as co-captains maybe?

I’d like Weston involved in the captaincy, I think she’s a great leader on court!

Weston and Watson as co-captains for me. Hadley as a vice-captain, I think she’s been an amazing leader for the Swifts and has gotten them over the line in so many close games. I think Proud and Simpson would both make great leaders if they manage to get themselves into the 12 and establish their positions there.

Hey al_ex, I did like this bit… Would love to see Proud instead of Anstiss but I expect they’ll use the “we need more WD backup” argument.

You do realise that 6 of the 7 midcourters you listed have past or present WD experience? That’s a LOT of backup!

Perhaps I’m just being pessimistic, but I really don’t see Anstiss being left out considering Marinkovic is coach, especially if Fever go on to make the final (and even win). The selectors generally look to reward players from winning teams (it’s the only reason I can see why Nevins made the Diamonds in 16/17).

Add in the fact that Moloney and Price seem to be more used in C now (and are highly rated), Parmenter and Simpson are the best performing WDs and Watson is pretty much the only WA who would see the court unless there was an injury. Proud doesn’t seem to be rated. Obviously all those WD options wouldn’t make the 12, but for me it feels like they’re more likely to go for a Watson/Hadley/Moloney/Price midcourt (plus a specialist WD if they take 5 midcourters) than the Watson/Proud/Hadley/Simpson midcourt I’d prefer. It seems even more probable they’d overload on WDs if Eddy doesn’t make the 12.

I personally don’t think we need that much WD backup, but it seems to be the position the selectors always talk a lot about, plus it’s an excuse that makes it easy to justify selecting players that seem to be quite hyped (like Price, Parmenter, Moloney and Anstiss).

Whilst a lot of the talk will be about the shooters, it’s definitely the midcourt I’m most interested to see! JLP is in great form, but I really am not a fan of her style of play, bit too push and shove. I would actually go for a Watson/Hadley/Simpson midcourt and based on current form also have Proud in the 4. If you’ve got Eddy in the defensive line she has also played most of the season at WD. Really would like to see Parmenter and Anstiss in the squad though, both can rotate to C too.

                          Shooters: Austin/Bassett/Wood/Koenan/Phillip OR Dwan
                          MidCourt: Proud/JLP/Watson/Parmenter/Hadley/Simpson
                          Defence: Weston/Bruce/Eddy/Klau/Mannix or Jenner

I really struggle with Hadley and Simpson, these guesses are what I think will happen but to be honest, I can’t justify Simpson’s selection, inconsistent form for the past two seasons and Hadley’s play never translates on the international stage but I don’t think they will be dropped. I wouldn’t be surprised though to see a surprise selection or two that is different from what I have. Maybe Anstiss or Nanakivell could mix up that midcourt as there is a lot of chance there with Brazill and Browne out, maybe even Verity Charles since Stacey is the coach… Also, Turner might be in there but considering she only just returned from injury and is in inconsistent form as a result, maybe not, same goes for Brandley.

Is it usually a squad of 18?

This announcement coincides with the Magic naming their shooting end. Thus I expect a certain retirement or unavailability for someone in particular 👀

I just hope the selectors are bold instead of boring. Tegan Philip has been given SO many chances, and she just doesn’t work at international level. I would have Dwan over her.

Philip hasn’t even worked at domestic level this year. Sophie Garbin may have only had one dominant quarter but in those 15 minutes alone she gave more of an indication of what she could do for the Diamonds than Philip has. Dwan has been outstanding pretty much every week since the win over Fever in Round 6. If they’re really so worried about selecting an inexperienced player I’d just send three shooters.

Weird time to name the squad. Wait til after finals?

Bassett to be included? She is still the best GS in Aus so what a huge loss if she is heading to NZ.
