WOW! I wonder where the 8th team will come from- Geelong and Gold Coast Titans aren’t ready this year. Theoretically Tasmania is ready; do they have the training facilities? I know there’s stadiums. Does netball Tas have the money for it? Big few weeks/months ahead. Poor Collingwood players, especially the internationals who could be going to NWC with no job to return to.
Netball Australia has today received notification from Collingwood that it will not be renewing its Suncorp Super Netball team licence for the 2024 season.

Weasel words in the statement; pathetic Collingwood management.

That logo from Netball Victoria speaks a thousand words!!!
Kelly Ryan attended a Zoom conference on behalf of @NetballAust after Collingwood released their decision to withdraw their license for 2024. NA were disappointed with the decision and "cannot agree with some of the rationale that the Magpies are providing."

The CBA negotiations can run parallel to the eight licensee process. All players are contracted until Sept 30th, and it's preferred that no new contracts will be put in place until the 8th licensee is confirmed.

Pies' player and staff wellbeing is paramount, and NA will do everything they can to provide wellbeing support during this difficult and uncertain period. They are contracted until Sept 30, which gives them a small amount of financial security.

You need a licensor to take on the eighth team for sure.. but does anyone think a call(s) might’ve already vee made to Taurua to say “do you want to come back to Australia post NWC?”
If she weren’t to continue with the Ferns, the challenge (we knows she loves them) of starting from the ground up (again) would surely prove too good to pass up – especially if the Ferns reclaim the NWC.
Heart goes out to the Collingwood club. It’s been shambles at that club recently in all domains. They don’t understand people.
Yes, would also think that they need an experienced coach to help build up a new team. Taurau would be ideal, but someone like Plummer or Neville would be great too.
Collingwood Players Statement:
Statement from Collingwood netballers
Sometimes I wonder if the people running NA are all that qualified.
Those are some serious pointed fingers and a strong statement from the Collingwood players which I’ll try to take at face value. I’d like to know what they expected Netball Aus to do.
I meant i find it hard to not take the comments on face value just because of NA’s track record. And even if they couldn’t specifically help financially at this point, they definitely must’ve made some management errors for it to get this bad. License holders should have to prove that they have a solid plan for their team.
I’ve been mulling over this one since it came and there’s just so much info out there – here are my key takeaways.
I feel really sorry for the players, coaching staff and broader front office staff who lost their jobs today.
I do also think some of the finger pointing at NA is unjustified. I’m a little confused at what Collingwood players expected them to do in this situation. The management of finances are a club thing, and the Pies didn’t do this well. Did the players want NA to bail them out financially? We all know they don’t have the money to do that, nor should they do that.
I really feel like the players should turn their anger to their own club in this situation.
After all, two other clubs came in at the same time. One of them won back to back flags and the other has played in two grand finals. Arguably, the team that’s disbanding has the most facilities, financial backing and access to an existing member base than the three expansion clubs.
– Lastly, while I understand the commercial realities with Fox, I hope NA doesn’t rush the process of adding an eighth team.
It’s all very sad.
What a mess. I feel for the players but I’m not sure that it’s realistic to expect NA to have helped financially.
Unfortunately with the change in management at Collingwood there doesn’t seem to be any commitment to the netball team. I wonder why the Magpies netball team were not co owned by NV and Collingwood like the Giants are? Was this model not considered? Did NV, Collingwood or both not want a joint partnership?
Looking back at news reports from the start of Magpies netball team and SSN it does seem that Eddie McGuire was very confident that the Magpies team could turn a profit and improve the profile and popularity of netball. However from the first season members of this forum who joined the club reported that the communication and professionalism re their memberships was very poor.
I hope NA and SSN do a better job with the replacement team next year. -
