There’s a story out today that there’s doubt over the future of Collingwood in SSN.
“Following seven seasons of poor performance and financial instability in the Super Netball league, players were informed of the tenuous situation early on Tuesday in a meeting at the AIA Centre with club CEO Craig Kelly.”
I’m not too surprised really. The whole time I was watching the game on Sunday all I could think was how poor the crowd was.
Been a while coming IMO. Be sad if it does happen though.
This is unfortunately not surprising. I wrote in the match thread on the weekend how they are clearly the worst performing SSN expansion team, both in results and fan base/match attendance.
But very worrying and the gap would need to be filled somehow.
What a shame. I really hope SSN doesn’t reduce to 7 teams, would be such a loss of talent.
Surely they wouldn’t reduce to 7 teams! They need more not less!
Mentor has put up an Instagram story saying SSN and Netball Aus need to sort out their shit “from all netballers, clubs and staff”.
Is it correct that the SSN comp contracts are up for review/renewal at the end of this year?
Well, if Geva doesn’t like it she can always go play elsewhere
From Netball Australia…
Perhaps Netball Tas could take the team over. We already sponsor them. Maybe our premier can build a white elephant/stadium to seal the deal. 😬
With all contracts expiring this year & no talk of improvement of the financial position of the league after the last number of years of financial mismanagement, bigger (worse) things may yet be to come.
Disappointing but not surprising. Even aside from their inconsistent performances, Collingwood have really not done a great job of winning over old Vixens supporters. The Giants have at least been able to focus on their Western Sydney base and have really prioritised local talent, plus JFitz has always been popular and they were able to bring over old favourites like Green, Pettitt and Bulley in the beginning. I think it would realistically be better to have a team in Tasmania. I mean the attendance for Magpies games is always higher in Launceston than in Melbourne unfortunately. It probably wouldn’t affect their recruiting that much either, considering Browne, Jovic and Newton are the only players up for contract next year in the 10 that come from Victoria. Canberra or Newcastle could be good options as well.
