Shooters
Austin, Bueta, Dwyer, Garbin, Koenan, Wood, WallamMidcourt
Brazill, Hadley, Moloney, Watson, Parmenter, PriceDefence
Bruce, Klau, Aryang, Turner, WestonNotable omissions: Proud, Ravaillion and Browne.
No new members other than Wallam. SM can add to the squad later in the season as it is currently at 18 players.
I’m personally shocked that neither Proud or Rav made it. I don’t even think if Parmenter will make the final 12, she isn’t a shutdown WD in my opinion and not as versatile as others.
i wonder what Proud and Ravaillion need to do to be included!!
I understand why they’ve gone with 18 considering it’s still early in the season but if they don’t add Proud and Ravaillion at some point then that’s crazy!
My hope is that considering SM doesn’t seem keen on Rav or Proud, hopefully if she adds them when the squad goes to 22, there’s a greater chance of them making the final 12. Grasping at straws here but hopefully.
Only 2 WA’s suggests the WA/C (Hadley and Watson) is decided. The rest is between Moloney/Price and Braz.
As a TBirds supporter, I hope one day we see some of them in the Diamonds! Petty has been amazing since moving into WD so maybe if she keeps that up all season and into next she might be looked at for the future
So stoked to see Wallam make the squad. I think Rav and Proud are unlucky to have missed out and Moloney is lucky she an established combination with Watson. Overall pretty happy with the squad.
Yes, we haven’t had anyone in the Diamonds for a while from the Thunderbirds. I think Nankivell could eventually be there. For Horjus it will depend on where she’s playing I think, maybe Dwan or Garrett a few years down the line.
Where is Ravallion?! I would go with:
Shooters: Bueta, Wood, Austin, Koenen
Midcourters: Watson, Hadley, Brazill, Price
Defenders: Bruce, Weston, Klau, TurnerI really don’t understand the lack of Rav. She’s the in-form Centre right now, she has experience playing (and winning!) at an international level, and she has a great connection with Bueta. Plus, if they decide to include Wallam, she would be the best option for feeding her.
The entire midcourt is strange. 4/6 defensive midcourters. Dropping Maddy Proud (who is versatile) and picking up Amy Parmenter (who is great, but doesn’t seem likely to take that WD spot for Comm Games).
I’m also a little shocked Koenen was selected. I know she has international caps and performed well at the quad series but she’s been shocking this season (apart from her last game). Then again, not really sure who else they could have gone with, apart from if they dropped a shooter and picked up an attacking mid courter
Parmenter has been retained, she made the squad last time. I think the reality is there was no reason to drop her so she retains her place – she has been in decent form.
Simmons, Charles and Proud haven’t been in the best form, so it’s up to them to fight their way back in.
As for Rav, a definite head scratcher, there must be something they are seeing that they don’t like.
For me personally, every time I see her casually bounce the ball before stepping in to the C circle, takes me straight back to 2018 when she was called for not whole within. Maybe it does the same thing to Annie.
re Chloe, i agree as im not sure if they need so many shooters. i thought it would have been better to give Koenen (or Garbin)’s spot to an in form Rav who has both international experience and a strong connection with Bueta who will no doubt be in the starting 7!!
Yeah Annie’s comments around the mid court were interesting. She made comments around the balls they DON’T give (Rav?) and defensive ability (Browne?).
I think Watson, Hadley, Braz is a strong starting midcourt, and JLP a solid bench addition which allows multiple different combination switch ups. Not mad with it! Agree it sucks for Proud and Rav, but I feel good about the squad.
