I’m floored about Rav’s omission, just don’t know what else she has to do…I guess the 7 turnovers against T’birds last week was a nail, and the unfortunate coach killer turnover late in 2018 Comm Games final is still biting…i actually think subbing Gietzy at half time was our biggest mistake in that final…just ridiculous coaching for mine…at least get your gun to play the last 2 quarters to close out the win…anyhow, back to Ravvy, I also wouldn’t be surprised if Liz Watson was consulted on her choice. And that is a captain’s prerogative…BUT I can tell you clear as night follows day, Maloney and Price (even Hadley) cannot feed Grets and Nelle like Rav. Period. Full stop. Shut the flammin gate. I thought selections were also based on club connections not this desperate need for dual positions…did COVID throw out specialisation?? My guess is Stace has already locked in her starting 7, which has Bruce (GK), Weston (GD), Brazill (WD), Hadley (C), Watson (WA), Wood (GA) and Grets (GS) with Maloney or Price, Klau, Sunday, Austin and probably Koenen the likely bench…good chance for Wallam to secure a Comm Games bench spot methinks…Parmenter will also go very close…in the end it would appear Rav is not in Stace’s thinking for some reason…perhaps she’s concerned Rav would run the show as she does at C and she has other plans…who knows???
Wonderful that Nelle is in that squad after 5 SSN games, what a freaking champ, all I can say there is WATCH OUT WORLD!! Loving that selection so so much 😇. If Koenen or Garbin are ahead of Nelle right now then I’m not here either and you could argue that Ruby B-D is more in form than Turner but she has her Klau connection and was well deserved MVP in 2021 SSN final. Will be interesting if Ruby and Rav can break into that extended squad by June/July. Best heads up, etc, etc Rav can give selectors is an SSN 2022 premiership 😇

The only logical reason I can come up with for Proud and Rav’s omissions are concerns about their abilities to feed a moving circle. Rav has been exposed for this previously (the only players she’s built strong connections over her career are Bassett, Aiken and now Wallam) and Proud has never really played at the top level with a moving GS. It makes me think that Marinkovich has locked in Wood/Bueta as her starting circle, and is probably looking at Austin/Dwyer/Koenen and I guess Garbin as the backups. If Stacey was looking to push Wallam into the 12 I think Rav would have been selected.

I like Moloney as a shutdown WD backup to Braz. I wouldn’t be using her in C though, I think it would be more effective to bring Wood into WA and use Hadley/Watson at C if the starting lineup wasn’t working.

Re: Rav. I feel Stacey and selectors know she isn’t going to be their main player in C, that is Hadley. And she doesn’t really offer the stand out ability to slot in anywhere else. So, I think in the midcourt, if you aren’t the starter in your position, you need to be versatile.

They are building their game around Watson and Bueta, and Rav doesn’t suit that style. Sure she feeds Bueta at GA, but this is a different set up.

Tbirds vs FB, often she wouldn’t give the ball when Wallam could take it, and when she did, it didn’t quite go where it needed to.

I don’t quite get some people thinking just reading the comments – Austin should be in the team because she played excellently in the last game and not really the ones previously. Koenan shouldn’t be in the team because she played excellently in the last game but not really the ones previously

Where did you read that in the comments Kerryn?

I mentioned both Austin and Koenen but I didn’t say anything about if they SHOULD or SHOULDN’T be in the squad. And I can’t see that in others’ comments. Marinkovich said, using Austin as an example, that players needed time after returning from COVID or significant injury.

Oh, someone else did say that about Koenen…I reckon she’s in there given her link with Wood – it’s great when it’s on.

My point was that I think they’ll only take one specialist GS.

I have to say I was a bit weepy to hear Wallam had been included. They mentioned it during the sports segment on ABC RN Breakfast Thursday morning and I was very excited for her, so glad to hear Warrick was right.

@JR sorry should’ve elaborated slightly on that, not specifically this thread (though reading back through there have been a couple), but there have been quite a few comments over the past week or so on who will/won’t make the team – so it was more of a generalisation on comments I’ve seen across here and FB.

I just think people bagging Koenan’s form currently need look at Maia Wilson last year – she pretty much went to pieces the second half of the season (and between her not benching herself, or the coach doing it for her – cost the Stars a finals spot), and then shot the lights out for the Silverferns

I know Dwyer won’t make the team. Though I do rate Horjus over her. She’s been consistent over the years whilst Dwyer has been average at best this season.
Glasgow over Garbin, she’s versatile and can shoot from anywhere.

I thought Dwyer was brilliant in round 1 then caught covid. It’s taking most players multiple weeks to return to their best post covid and Dwyer showed signs she is doing that lat round.

I think Garbin was lucky to make the Diamonds squad a few years ago when there was limited options. Glasgow had her ACL at the time. Now there are others pushing through but in the selectors eyes it’s close to Comm Games and Garbin is experienced in the environment u like the others.

She came on in a couple of games in the quad series at GS and went well. I’ve no doubt if she was actually getting full games at GS in SSN she would be doing enough to warrant her spot. Just think. If she had stayed at Swifts one more year, she would have that starting GS position now!

Agree with Ian – Garbin as GS is super strong. We’ve seen glimpses. Dominating Geitz and Bruce, no mean feat. It’s a shame she’s not getting consistent game time there, hopefully it happens soon. But we’ve seen her potential to dominate, and maybe the coaches and selectors have seen it at camps too. Hadley and Watson feeding her, and Wood at GA would be potent. Or a Bueta jump feed. I’m keen to see it, and would feel pretty confident as a supporter if that was our change up option at CWG.

Yes, I agree. Garbin is a solid GS, and if she does has be thrown into GA, she is a better option than koenan.

I probably just wouldn’t want Garbin in the position where she has to sink the winning goal in the dying seconds.

What I like about Wallam as an option, is how she could impact a game where we needed to score quickly. She could on in the final quarter and be a real target. Bassett was that player when she first came into the Diamonds and it won us the 2011 WC.

Garbin’s shooting under pressure makes me nervous. I agree she is a different player at GS than GA. Really should have gone to Adelaide.

I’m a big Garbin fan and I’m really excited about her inclusion. I love what the tall circle with the jump pass added at the quad series when it was trialled and I think that connection can only grow. I’d also love to see her with Wood out in front, or Austin, creating space.

Unfortunately we have mainly seen her at GA this year in a club that isn’t bringing out the best in her. This isn’t a true reflection and I’m sure the selectors have looked pst this and seen what a string option she could be

Lots on the Diamond Squad at the end of the SSN Round 6 thread about the goalers. Garbin not being mentioned much. I feel so sad for her that she’s out in GA when she’s such a good GS. And the timing of moving from Swifts. Ofcourse, it couldn’t have been known what would happen to Wallace, but sorry for Garbin.
