So, a new era or not! At this stage nothing seems to have changed.
do the same thing, get the same results…
I think Wills and Bloxham have done the right thing upskilking their overseas experience. ANZp is not a strong enough SF pathway route currently.
I wonder if Akle was up for consideration, but couldn’t work out a deal where she could do both SSN and the Assistant Ferns role?
DTN and Debs are very close friends. I can imagine Debs saying to Noel’s, “if you don’t get X person, I’ll come back in a part time role”.
*BTW I have no idea if she did the role part time the last time, or if the role is actually a part time role. I’m just speculating 🤷♂️😂yes, I’ve never been a fan of her picking and choosing which games she wants to coach. Maybe that’s where some of the players get it from.
I have to admit I’m very underwhelmed with this announcement. Noel’s was saying a lot about tacking this team in a new direction, yet looking at this nothing has changed at all. The Ferns need new strategies and fresh ideas not just sticking with the same, same because it hasn’t been working.
What a poor selection, guess it continues the Noel’s selecting her besties again.
Seeing a lot of comments on here and social media saying “same same”. I do 100% agree! But I do think they are capable of coming up with a new plan. They worked their magic back in 2019 and then fell dismal in 2023. This is their chance (which is for 2 yrs) to make things right.
Players need to take responsibility too. I am a massive Toeava/Nweke fan. I think their combination is world class. In my biased opinion I think it’s one of (if not the best) WA-to-GS combinations in the world.
However if Toeava is not making simple fitness standards, that’s on her not DNT or Deb’s.Ferns need a plan B in defence. When the zone isn’t working they need a man on defence approach. Seen the diamonds do the zone defence against the ferns in con cup.
Especially against the unfamiliar style of play they come up against, e.g Uganda where the zone doesn’t work against their styles of play.
The SF need quite a few plan Bs across the court.
I feel confident Taurua and Fuller have recognized this and hope it’s reflected in selection come the 6th of August. It’s just a joke. The same crew that led us to our worst WC result ever are put back in place. It makes as much sense as Gail Parata taking the champion winning Pulse from top of the table to the bottom and then being replaced as coach, and instead becomes a SF selector. Noels likes looking after her mates.
@TB other don’t have fitness standards that exclude them from selection. Only NZ. We sent our fittest team ever to the WC and had our worst result ever. The stupidity that is Noels means she would rather take fitness over form.
We have regressed as a national team and only rely on one player to win. Look at the Pulse, multiple injuries to players and their shooters but they still have the structures to win. That’s what good coaching and systems do.
Relying on one player is nothing new for the Ferns. We did it for years with IVD. The difference is IVD never got injured. Our worst result at WC wasn’t because we had fit players, it was we had an injured Nweke. There’s literally no other reason.
It’s also a good thing that we had the fittest players selected, cause they had to work over-time with Wilson at GS. Our middies had to play that ball over and over and over again, and constantly re-setting it. It took a toll on our fittest players.Look I don’t agree with some of DNTs selections and some of her ways, but I do agree with fitness standards.
@silverferns1, SF already have a plan B, that was Kelly Jackson at WD 😉 😉
You need a plan C. DNT always says 121 isn’t the NZ style, like you said the zone doesn’t always work. The TJ series should be interesting, SF are short of defenders and the Roses defenders lack height.
We do have 2 over 188cn but they are inexperienced.
One last question, will Kayla Johnson make the Ferns??
LOLYuss queen @Nesian.
Agree that we need fitness standards, but I don’t think Noeline is seeing beyond that.
I’d love/hate to know how much this extravaganza of re-hiring the exact same people cost. Especially when Hotts quotes the strengths of Debbie’s application included her alignment with the (high performance) strategic priorities – which she probably helped write!
There’s some massive cognitive biases amongst us too. The Noel/Deb combo win/loss combo isn’t as amazing as our WC-winning-by-1-goal pride would have us believe. Ignoring that result (or fluke, as I’ve heard some describe it), our record vs the big 4 is underwhelming.
The reign of Noeline would surely go down as the most expensive, for the least successful returns.
