Who needs a specialist WA anyway? Think this makes an already difficult tour a whole heap harder!
It’s ridiculous. How many WD’s do we need?! And making Gabby Marshall a C/WA when she’s a C/WD is stupid. We’ve done that before with Serena Guthrie. It doesn’t work. Iona Christian was the WA for the WYC, why isn’t she included? If Pitman retired and Haythornthwaite was injured then who is the upcoming WA? Is it really Parsons? And why wasn’t Sasha Corbin included? She’s the other old head at WA. I get the awful feeling Roses are heading for a dire CWG 2022.
I can’t see this going well for us at all…. don’t even think I could guess a starting 7!
9/16 are listed as playing WD…
Unless we see SDL feed fisher and cardwell? Or Guthrie play WA just to give experience there with Clarke at C?
I’m pleased to see Halimat Adio in the squad though, thought she had a great first couple of games at the VNSL this year and it will be interesting to see if this helps her step up.
Fisher
Caldwell
Malcolm or Parsons
Guthrie
Clarke
Gibson
QuashieIMO JT doesn’t favour Williams or Corbin so I don’t think they will get the start.
Corbin just needs to play and drop the “showtime” tag that Gardo gave her.
SDL needs to step up she wasn’t good in the SA tests but in her defence Malcolm is not an international WA. SDL would benefit from a proper WA.I hope Allison and Carter both get on court.
The defence has talent but lacks experience but this is their chance to step up. Again I hope they all get to play in their first choice positions so they can show what they can really do.
I can’t see us winning a game but i hope we get close, by that i mean within 10.
For me Beth Cobden or Natalie Panagarry should be in at WD, think Laura Malcom is not international class. Lack of specialist WA bothers me somewhat. Not sure how we are going to do. Wished we had the Aussie based English roses
We’re gonna be whitewashed 3-0 for sure.
The lack of WA is worrying. I’m surprised Corbin or Christian wasn’t included. The only true WA is Parsons but she’s not international level. I wonder how many of these WD’s were WA’s growing up but we’re forced to convert.
COVID will affect England the most tbh. They haven’t had much time playing domestically compared to Aus & NZL. I don’t see us defending that gold medal in 2 years time tbh. I also don’t think that Thirlby is the right coach at this moment in time but only time will tell how she fairs.
It’s too soon to say this isn’t the right job for Thirlby – give her a chance. Although with this selection, she’s definitely got her work cut out. IMHO Cardwell is NOT a GA and shouldn’t be used there – moves too like Dunn. Get SDL in there and blood her properly: she’s got the speed and the skill and just needs more exposure. But where are the WAs coming along behind? Why haven’t they picked Corbin senior? Without a pair of WAs, Birmingham 2022 is going to be a world of pain.
I think Laura Malcolm will be starting WA. I wouldn’t choose her but she will be.
I’m surprised Parsons was chosen, she doesn’t quite have what it takes and I thought she was poor for the few games for Storm this year.
I had in my head that Gabs Marshall was a WD too but maybe she’s not.
Would have loved to have seen Panagarry in WA with Guthrie in C and Clarke WD.
9 of the squad have WD down as an option ??
I’m not looking forward to us being destroyed by NZ for 3 games. They could play their 2nd team and still destroy us ? I hope they use the opportunity to bring through some younger players.I think Laura will start at WA as well, I don’t think she has quite the finesse on the feed though since it doesn’t seem like her natural position. Without Haythonthwaite and Pitman we really don’t have any backup WA’s. Also agree Cardwell isn’t a GA, it’s like Garbin being forced to play GA at the Swifts to improve her game, whereas really they should just be allowed to play to their strengths at GS…
I’m quite surprised if Malcolm is to be the starting WA. I remember an international game where she came on at WA and went off in tears. It did not go well at all.
Iona Darroch/Christian should definitely be played over her or even Corbin as she has masses of expertise.
Gibson has speed but lacks height for me.
Not sure if Cobden is playing this year. I think she said she wanted to take her time to come back after last time although would be great experience to have her.
Having slept on things I think my starting 7 would be,
Cardwell
Corbin
Clarke
Guthrie
Allison
Williams
QuashieOr Carter at centre and move Guthrie to WD.
Corbin needs to slow down. She can play at this level but tends play too fast and ends up on on foot and makes a turnover.
I know I can be critical of Corbin but somewhere on YouTube is a SF v Roses game with Corbin at GS and Houseby at GA and the roses win. Yes, Corbin played the whole game!I’d go with
Fisher
SDL
Clarke
Guthrie
Carter
Williams
Quashie / OyesolaIMO the Corbin ship has sailed – she makes so many mistakes it’s painful to watch. CWG Glasgow anyone?
I feel like Corbin just got cancelled by some fans because of what happened in Glasgow. The reality of the situation was that she was completely out of her depth, had no support and was forced to run out full games at GA even though she was clearly fatigued. Add in the coaching of Mayes and everything imploded. The English plan was Harten/Cookey and they were caught off guard when Cookey unfortunately got injured. Corbin has played some really good matches in the English dress and I think her dynamic movement at GS really helps them at times when Housby and Harten aren’t available. I don’t think she’s so strong at GA but I’d give her a better chance of running with Burger out there than I’d give Caldwell.
WA seems to always have been a problem area for WA. I don’t know how good Parsons is there but she doesn’t seem that highly rated so I expect one of the defensive midcourters will get shifted. I’d like to see:
Fisher
Corbin
Clarke
Guthrie
Carter
Williams/Gibson
Quashie/WilliamsAlthough she’s more of a WD/C, Carter can play WA.
