Hey Al_ex, why can’t a GS be a solid captain? What difference does the position make? Does that mean a GK can’t make a great captain (thinking Geitz, Bruce, Ellis…) It’s about leadership and passion. The players voted CBass so it can’t be a ‘wrong’ decision.
What is a wrong decision is for Giants to play the same shooters for 60 minutes. The team plays average for 10 minutes then bang on the super shots. This surely can’t be the game plan?
Why not stick with a solid shoot – ala Aitken, Fowler, Coenen, Potgeitzer, Nelson. Seems to be working well for them!Bassett was Australia’s biggest weapon. Other teams were trying to figure out ways to stop her. Her job was simply scoring goals and lots of them. And it should have stayed that way. She’s never been quite the same dominant player since. Almost all of the best captains have been defenders or midcourters.
Personally I don’t see the problem with a shooter being captain if they can handle it. In this specific case I don’t think Bassett getting captaincy was the problem. She is in a team that is not using her the way they should and has been partnered with another player who is more of a GS than a GA. On top of that she was injured and probably hasn’t come back the way we expected. I see that Bassetts form has dropped but Giants need to take the right steps to get it back and I don’t think her being captain is the biggest factor
She’s not the captain of the Giants, Harten is. And I think that’s why Fitzgerald is playing Harten much more than Bassett, she’s the captain.
Exactly what Ian said, it’s too much additional responsibility and pressure. I don’t think Bassett necessarily is the right type of person for it either. If I was going to name a shooter who would be a good captain, I would pick Housby (or maybe Harten), but in general I don’t think it’s to be recommended.
Given how the Diamonds have had a lot of turnover and no one’s starting position seems to be safe, maybe they need to embrace co-captains like the Vixens have. Watson is the only Diamond who has her position sewn up so if they don’t want it to be her they might need two.

Mainly because I don’t think a GS or GA has ever captained Australia so how would you know what sort of captain a shooter would be (besides Bassett). Really, what difference does the position make? Do you think it was because Bassett was captain that we lost the World Cup? But we won the last one because a defender was captain? Sorry, but I’m really struggling with the logic here.
Just an FYI, past Australian Diamonds Captains who were shooters off the top of my head – Vicki Wilson, Sharelle McMahaon, Marg Caldow, Anne Sargeant, Cath Cox (briefly)
Personally, if I had to pick the best Aust captains I’ve seen (Brown and Caldow too early for me but obviously results were good), I would go for…
Liz Ellis, Laura Geitz, Michelle den Dekker, Nat von Bertouch.

I guess the question now is who should he captain going forward? I guess Watson with Bruce or Hadley as Vice (or Co)? Weston?
See, that’s where we got into problems. Ideally, your captain should be someone who’s certain of their spot in the team. And when she was chosen, Bassett WAS certain of her place in the team. Not many were. My choice would be Watson. Simpson would be a good captain, but she has to get in the team first.

Sorry, but that’s the most idiotic comment I’ve ever heard regarding a netball captain. Then again, maybe that’s why Jo Harten isn’t playing well. I mean, how can she possibly shoot goals when she has the responsibility of being a captain? Ergh. Liz Ellis would have a field day with this! Not to mention every other ‘Confident Girl’ who shoots goals.

:unsure: Geez, no need to take it so hard. It’s just an opinion. We’re allowed to have them, you know. Just saying why would you risk losing one of Australia’s strongest assets which is Bassett scoring goals, by making her have to concentrate on being the captain as well? Just let her do her job of being the GS. Added to this, I didn’t think she was best suited to the job either. But again, it’s just an opinion. You clearly have a different one.
And in case you think otherwise, this is not being anti-Caitlin Bassett. I’ve been one of her biggest supporters. I just don’t think she should have been made captain.
I agree with the concept behind your argument Ian, not every player is suited to balancing the role of captain with their role as an on court member of the playing team. The captain isn’t necessarily the best on court, but one that fulfils all the other aspects of the role of leader. Personally I don’t agree with the Giants recruitment and strategy moving forward, however the fact that CBass is the diamonds captain doesn’t make her immune from the bench. In my opinion, it’s bad player management and a lack of cohesion on court that leads to her being on the bench, not as an individually bad player but she just doesn’t fit into the style of the Giants play right now. It’s pretty obvious that her form just isn’t there this season but that could be due to a variety of factors, particularly lack of match time and of course the super shot, but I still believe if she is as capable as everyone says she is then she should shoot them. It’s an unfortunate situation but it’s up to her and the Giants to work something else out for next year, either a change in playing style or a change in club.
