Why was their request to postpone denied? They have 6 out but the guidelines say ‘5 or more’. Gosh.
I know they said they would CONSIDER rescheduling if the conditions were met but I still feel like this is valid grounds for postponing. But I also get that the league probably doesn’t want to be lenient on the rules already. But really, Burton, Parmenter, JLP are three middies and Sligar a WD, so technically you could consider them all from the mid court. So that is gonna make things hard for them this weekend.
Very strange to make guidelines and then at the first opportunity not utilise them. “On a case by case basis” leaves a lot of uncertainty.
Perhaps because Sligar and Donoghue etc. aren’t starters? So technically only 3 from the starting 7? Even then that’s a harsh stretch.
Poor Giants.
Are Jemma Donoghue, Eliza Burton and Nat Sligar part of the squad? do training partners count as squad? Might be the technicality there?
Well didn’t take long for the league to show their guidelines were a bunch of bull – I was surprised by how good the guidelines seemed, way less surprised now. The giants are supposed to submit a team list today while still waiting to see if two players are able to be cleared to play? Surely JLP, Parmenter and Amy Sligar all being WDs would count for the three players in one position out
So if Giants wanted to, could they grab Chelsea Pitman? Are they within their rights to do that?
Squad includes TPs. The rules account for that. Sligar is contracted as part of the 10. Really they should’ve been granted it seeing that three middies are out.
Yes Giants are within their rights to grab Chelsea.
Is anyone really surprised that NA denied the request? Vixens argued the point about about integrity and quality last year when 3 players couldn’t travel to WA. They also argued the point about player welfare, is it fair to throw a team of young uncapped players out against full strength opposition? That’s why multiple clubs including Giants supported them.
The rules about 5 players is 5 of the 10 contracted players Kelly Ryan confirmed that on fox. At this point Giants have 3 contracted players confirmed as out but possibly 5 depending on whether Moore and A Sligar get medical clearance or not.
As it is now NA denied the first request but they are still reviewing the second request.
Maybe it is just me but I find the rule that Giants can now use other teams’ TPs is unprofessional. Let’s say they use Pitman, can Pitman then play for Fever in the future or possibly even another team that may suffer a covid outbreak? That’s ridiculous.
At least Giants are getting their covid outbreak out of the way early.
I didn’t like Kelly Ryan’s comment about the Giants having a large squad of 18. Agree with Cox they aren’t all internationals and therefore aren’t all equal. Also are Giants being punished for developing local talent? If they had a smaller squad would their request be accepted?
Also surely the league wants to do everything possible to prevent this outbreak from extending to the Thunderbirds.
Any Giants player that travels to SA and tests positive there will have to go into 7 day isolation in SA under the SA health protocols.
Then why did Kelly Ryan speak on fox tonight about the request being denied and the processes that they are going through to make the decision? Isn’t Ryan the CEO of NA?
The article says Amy Sligar is cleared to play who is in the contracted 10 – it’s Nat Sligar whose unavailable.
There’s another artcile (https://supernetball.com.au/news/giants-request-reschedule) that says it’s only 3 players who have covid and two others have cleared isolation but waiting for medical clearance so perhaps it’s not as bad as being reported.Thank goodness Claire Iongi played in the Pacific Series last week for Tonga and she was phenomenal. I think she would step up for the Giants defence this week.
