Sorry, Paris Mason at GD
Internet sucks, might not be able to update as much.
Ward has twisted her right ankle, she’ll prob be okay.
JLP at centre, much more direct access to Giants circle now; they’re out 17-14. It’s confidence and a quick-release flat pass that’s working, it’s not rocket science.
Pulse have a new GS, blonde with a huge plait, I don’t recognise her. She doesn’t have the presence and calmness of Walmsley. Both Kiwi shooters have been done for contact while trying to screen the shot – note, two Australian umpires.
Pulse really struggling at supershots. I’m also seeing the Pulse reacting to lack of umpire calls for the standard Giants defence pushing groundwork. Giants D isn’t trying any harder, they’re just being smarter at unbalancing Pulse and wearing them down.
Dwyer quite dynamic with a couple of good rebounds. I can really see Harten’s timing working and she’s adapting her body and passes on the fly, often to make sure both she and Dwyer are threats.
That Q was 16-7 to giants so it’s 29-20 at half time
You can find the game here, but the quality was not great when I was watching…
Looks like a few changes for Q3:
Oktai Dwyer White JLP Sligar Ward O’B
Part way through Q2 Pulse out Balmer at GD (couldn’t read her name)
Leatherbarrow and Souness are here but not playing
Pulse shooters are relying on predictable structures; as good as Metuarau’s pass sometimes is, giving it to Walmsley at the back with no space and thinking her long arms will be enough is silly. It’s like they’re just PLAYING, and not WORKING. Gordon is dogged but she can’t do everything and she also has made a few poor pass selections that were never on.
O’Brien has been getting in the right space consistently and unlucky a few times at just stepping out. Ward is not getting clean possession much but definitely causing chaos and bothering Metuarau.
White and Oktai need more exposure. It’s great to see them out there, White is a radically different WA to Hay and has a fabulous change of pace, not the complete package yet by any means. Also Oktai is fine, sometimes I’m confused as to when she’s going to come off the hold, more work, more patience, more reliability for the feeders.
Third Q was 11-8 to Giants so it’s now 40-28.
ICYMI Vicki Wilson is on the Pulse coaching bench.
Walmsley isn’t doing badly; it’s really the pass selection to her. She does really well when the ball drops down from above and in front, she’s not always getting that good service. Gordon hammers it in at times and needs 5% less zing, while Metuarau just needs 20% less flair.
Walmsley other GA Gordon Ioane Mason Balmer Jackson for final Q
Jackson is playing fine, plenty of deflections and a few intercepts. One blocked shot on Dwyer. Quality player!
Last quarter was pretty messy. JLP seemed in the zone but almost everyone else was generally running and making poor decisions and shooting poorly.
Mason lost her timing (at WD) so while she wasn’t dangerous she was out of play too much. Pulse got it to the circle and didn’t put shots up and then missed, or just chucked a stupid long pass that was impossible.
O’Brien did have a pretty consistent game, might give her MVP.
Last Q was 13-6, overall 53-34 to Giants.
White did okay at WA… definitely peppy but a lot of errors. Hay is such a different kind of WA but she is really low on turnovers and always seems to be in the right spot and the right time – I think Hay was looking fitter for sure so hopefully she’ll get back to top form.
Giants defence were consistently okay, esp O’Brien and JLP. An okay performance, and lots to work on.
Would’ve been so much better to have a full-strength team on both sides with less than two weeks to go to the first game but oh well!
