No thanks! It would be much better to allow x number of players to play in SSN – if they could get contracts – than try to finance flying and accomodating teams over to Australia like they used to. This last season there were a small number of players playing in ANZ that no longer should have been (ie past it, no longer offer value) – the relevant franchises should have bought players up from the next tier.
Pre Covid one of the ANZ coaches told me that the gulf between what was NNL and ANZ had become vast and several years as a training partner was now required.I tried to post this, this morning.
If it’s going to happen, 2025 is the year ahead of 2026 CWG (if that happens) and 2027 NWC.
If NZers were able to get SSN contracts tomorrow and still play for the Ferns, I would say Nweke, Ekenasio, Gordon, Heffernan, Karaka, Jury, Watson and Burger would all get signed.
Anyone else I’m genuinely missing?
TPSR, Wilson, Metuarau, Crampton, MRB, Souness and Fitzpatrick are missing from the Ferns NWC 15.
I don’t know if all those players you listed would get signed, there’s really not enough spots. As it stands there’s not many (or any) players on SSN lists that I would say don’t meet the level required, and the lists can’t all be made of superstars because the money cap isn’t high enough.
If NZ did opens its players to coming over then there would need to be expansion or it wouldn’t be worth it for both Australia or NZ. Expansion is probably already on the cards from a talent availability perspective without NZ players, but do the funds exist? Probably not. I could see a scenario where Netball Australia would want money from NNZ to make it happen. Either that or we end up back where we started with a trans-Tasman league.
Are there any benefits to netball in NZ if NZ players are allowed to go across to SSN? Like what would that mean for a NZ league? Does the ANZP become more like the NSL as a secondary “development” competition that players get plucked from? Are netball fans in NZ ok with that concept? I’m Australian so I don’t know and I’m genuinely curious.
Wouldn’t allowing more imports in the ANZ be a better option for New Zealand netball? It would strengthen the league without subjecting it to some of the less desirable elements of SSN like the super shot.
Ye I don’t think there would be that many players in NZ that any of SSN teams will need. I think they may be interested in some defenders like Jury? Maybe Burger or Stythe?
I don’t even think they would need Nweke, considering players like Nelson, Garbin etc will be up for grabs too.I doubt they would go for her, but if Fever lose ATN, having some like Toeava feeding JFR could be something ????♂️ (I highly doubt it though).
Wonder if the SSN expanded and included one or two NZ based teams. Like the warriors, but the from Auckland and maybe Christchurch. Mainly NZ players, but unlimited internationals allowed.
And ANZP continues in the background to help promote and develop talent to feed it. It will give players in ANZP to also want to be at the level to be chosen to play in SSN…
Don’t know if the above makes any sense at all. lol
This could actually work. If the SSN and ANZ join forces, there would be more teams in the competition which is a win win for both sides.
I doubt there would be many picked up by SSN at all. I know of at least two Ferns who were in talks with SSN clubs and neither got picked up, mind you one of them wasn’t given permission by NZ Netball.
One of the few I think would get picked up would be Nweke because she can out jump a lot of defenders. Apart from that I don’t see where any of the other Ferns would outshine players that are already available in Aus or other imports that they could contract at a much cheaper price than NZ players.
I think Jury and Gordon would do well in the SSN. Maybe it’s a barrier for the NZ players getting approached knowing that they have to get clearance from NNZ. I think two NZ teams would be great in the SSN. I’m sure sky would want to cover that league if there were two NZ teams.
Agree, hardly any current Ferns would make the SSN.
I get sick of hearing the WE MUST HAVE NZ PLAYERS IN THE SSN!!!.
Poor coaching and a inexperienced centres, along with taking a supposed injured Jane Watson, was the Ferns undoing.
Also add in the coaching staff, deciding that the Ferns shouldn’t be allowed to use their natural flair.
Yes losing Grace Nweke was not ideal, but the Ferns should have beaten England and should never have drawn with SA.I think we (NZ) can do better than just supplying 2 teams. If ANZ and SSN were to combine I feel NZ could create 4 strong teams.
Team 1)
Nweke Vui Tui
Toeava Earle MSB ??
Karaka Styth TongTeam 2)
Wilson Ekenasio Malesala
MRB Edgecombe O’brien ??
Fowler Maihi KNCTeam 3)
Walmsley Metuarau Fisher
Souness Gordon Ioane ??
Jury Burley MasonTeam 4)
Dunn TPSR Heffernan
Saunders Poi Heffernan ??
Watson Burger Fifita*each team with 3 training partners
Would these 4 teams be able to genuinely compete against the 8 SSN teams? I honestly don’t know. I think Mystics (team 1) could be a genuine threat.
There’s also so many questions that has to be asked if these two competitions were to combine. Firstly I’d hope they learned from the last trans-Tasman comp they had. As a fan I would expect/want to see 2 full rounds – none of this 1 1/2 rounds where it favours NZ teams so they can make finals.
Do they keep the 2point rule? I feel this would disadvantage the NZ teams, but I could be wrong.
12 teams x 2 rounds = 24 games (I think). That’s not including finals. I’m wondering if it would be too much if each team played 2 games p/wk? Game days could be Sunday & Wednesdays.
Money?? Who/where is this coming from?
My other question – would this even be up for consideration if Nweke had not gotten injured and NZ medaled? Is this a knee-jerk reaction to not medaling? I agree with @mcleod poor coaching is to be blamed. NZ media need to take them to task, instead of blaming not playing in the SSN comp.
IMO this is a knee-jerk reaction. I have been highly critical of the coaches and selectors. But let’s put this into perspective, we lost the semi by 6. It was even for majority of the game, a fully fit Nweke could have changed that outcome she is worth 6+ goals. We then lost the bronze medal match by 7, again a fully fit Nweke could have changed that too.
@TB nice team selections, any thoughts on the head coaches?
@mcleod poor coaching  DNT said she had a plan and they had worked on a number of scenarios, including having a player sent off. I’m assuming losing Grace wasn’t one of them.
Knee jerk reaction ??
SSN is a netball “style” competition, VNSL and ANZP are true netball competitions.
NZ need to make better use of the Quad series, twice a year maybe?? How about reintroducing the Nations Cup or the world team competition.
The bottom line is
– yes!! Grace is worth 6 to 7 goals, so she would have made a difference,
– NZ turned over enough ball, they just couldn’t take the ball to goal,
– players couldn’t get free to recieve a pass, why ?Ha, ha how about a clash of codes cup competition..
The winning teams are excluded, but the coaches of the next 2 teams create squads using any/all of the remaining players. The players can put themselves forward.
There will be 2 Australia and 2 NZ teams and 2 rounds of games, both round robin. A round in NZ under the ANZP rules and a round in Australia under SSN rules.
Should be interesting and should bring in some bucks. 😉
@TB Great teams and thought process.
I too think there has been a knee jerk reaction to the Ferns finish. Had we beaten England, and at worst received a Silver Medal, would even be having these conversations? The flow on effect of the 4th finish is that the ANZ is sub-par all of a sudden and we need to get on board with Australia again. Really?? We should have won against England with the team we had, even without Nweke. Poor coaching decisions cost us the game.
