NNZ, after thorough discussions with Dame Noeline Taurua, has decided to launch a recruitment process for the position of head coach of the Silver Ferns. Taurua, who is contracted until the end of Feb, will reapply for the role and felt the process was the right decision to make. pic.twitter.com/kdif9esIwL

Silver Ferns head coach role to be an open process
Hmmmm. Always interesting when someone invited to re-apply for their current job.
Silver Ferns head coach job to be advertised, Dame Noeline Taurua to reapply
Taurua vows to fight for Silver Ferns’ head coaching job

Will be an interesting process. They need to arrest the fall off in viewership of netball by playing winning netball. Would love to know how many players, inside and outside of the Ferns squad, are in favour of Taurua being reinstated. Hope they don’t go for a half baked option of installing a really good coach as her assistant. That is just not going to get it done. Maybe Noeline could be an assistant coach over in the SSN?

Happy for Noeline to be the head coach should she drop the fitness requirements as they are doing more harm than good! There’s no way every Roses and Jamaican player would pass the Ferns fitness requirements (can only think of one diamond who would struggle and doesn’t need to as she is very good). Fitness can only get you so far in netball! cough cough 4th place at NWC.
Really enjoyed Tauruas explanation regarding her self assessment, performance and disappointing 4th place. She has taken a high level of accountability and talks positively about her passion for the SF.
IMO the fitness standards stay. Individual accountability is a must. I’m assuming most players will be steam rolling their targets now in the preseason.
Would love to know what the review mentions regarding NNZ accountability and possible changes.
Opening up the position is a smart move. If Taurua went straight in to the job, there would be a lot of criticism about having “blind faith” in DNT, especially if there aren’t any changes in results. At least this way, if nothing changes, NNZ could argue that there wasn’t anyone better than DNT. I think she is highly likely to get the job anyway, unless someone like YMD nails the interview and blows away the panel. I think it’s also reasonable since DNT has only had 1 full four year cycle, and ferns were under-strength with key players missing for pinnacle events, through injury, pregnancy or otherwise. Hopefully they are able to get some returns on blooding all those young players in the last 4 year cycle and figure out who their core group of players are, rather than a “I don’t know who I’m going to start” approach…
Time for Noel’s to move on, her record over the last 3 years is very poor. Yes they won the last 2 games of the Con Cup in 2023, and frankly should have won in 2022. But that is more to do with the Diamonds inability to win in NZ, (something Stacy needs to address for them).
Her 2022 Com Games selections were a utter disaster, selecting a injury riddled Kayla Johnson, who didn’t even have to pass the fitness test, then sat Bailey Mes on the bench for the last 4 games, as her shooting was not good enough, but left Ekenasio behind.
Noel’s has failed to develop a stable mid court.
The GS is just Grace and nothing else, we all saw that at the WC, no back up plan what so ever.
One also has to ask why Meels stayed home and did not want to captain the Ferns last month, was moving house the real reason!!!!.I’d be disappointed if Noel’s is re selected, I doubt she will and fully expect a Australian to be the next coach.
It’s interesting how everyone slaughtered Southby based on her results, but she didn’t have Langman or Kopua – 2 of the most vital players of the Silver Fern’s gold medal winning team. Since Taurua has been without them her results have been similar to Southby’s (losing to Australia, England, Jamaica) except that she has been protected and supported. You don’t read comments from Jenny Wyllie expressing concerns about the team and the results…
There’s really no player in the Ferns who could ever feel confident or comfortable, and while it builds competition, it also creates an environment of fear. A year out from the world cup and Kersten and Poi were the obvious centres for the Ferns (and had been playing in those positions), yet neither of them went…The issue is that it is consistently creating new teams, who have to really quickly gel together, while the excuses of ‘they’re a new and young team’ get thrown around. They’re ‘new’ and ‘young’ because the ones beginning to settle get turfed out! I would have preferred that Taurua had made a decision and then backed it.When Poi played against Australia (in Australia) in a new position of WA, it was like Taurua was looking for a reason to not have her. In the last tour Karaka was captain, and yet wasn’t starting. It’s just all unsettling.
The best teams have backed players, even if their form has dipped a bit. Medhurst always played better internationally than domestically, and for several years she was selected due to her class, rather than form. The Roses have had a really steady backbone of 3 for a number of years. As players have retired, it has slowly been tweaked. It was Mentor, Guthrie, Harten. Guthrie retired and Metcalf and Housby stepped up. Mentor stepped back, and the new line of defenders came through – while there was still an established line of at least 3 on court. The Ferns have no core players, because they are pinged in and out willy nilly.
I hope Ackle puts her name forward, as I think she’s the best of both worlds – high fitness expectations and is a coach players want to play for, PLUS is statistically sharp (selects the right players, and makes the right changes).
Yes, Taurua has won 5 club titles and a world cup, but in each one, she’s had the services of some of the best players to ever play the game. If she had had the players that Southby had, I’m not sure she’d have really done that much better.
I think the fitness is the only thing the SF have going for them and it shouldnt be dropped
@nachosreturn I think Southby mate alot more fatal errors that Noeline, she always seemed to run and hide from the press, yet Taurua isnt scared to accept responsibility. None of the players seemed to praise Southby yet the complete opposite for Taurua. Also Kopu and Langman wouldnt of gone into that WC without Taurua as a coach, they werent interested in Southby.
