Here at Netball Scoop, we know how much you’re missing netball. Believe me, we’re missing it too. So, we’re trying to keep you somewhat entertained during this awful time. Various things will be popping up on our social media platforms like puzzles and polls. And although it’s been quiet on the articles front (sorry about that), there will be more of those too in the near future. So, here is something new. Hopefully, you will find it interesting. How well do you know netball from the past 30 years? Do you fancy picking a dream team from the best players of that time? But can you do it with a salary cap?

Here is my team. Didn’t get to have all the players I would like to have of course, but it’s still a great team I think. I couldn’t go past my all-time favourite Sharelle (imagine Liz feeding her!), and I think Langman is an obvious choice for the midcourt. The defence end shows my support for the Swifts back in the CBT days. I had to choose Mary Waya because I was a fan of hers. It’s a bit of a shame she isn’t around now when Malawi are having more success, would be great to see her and Mwai in the circle together. And although she was a little hit and miss at times, I was also a fan of Fuhrmann, so had to include her being only $1. Meanwhile Burger has quickly become one of my favourite Kiwis and I think is only going to continue to get better and give us Aussies some headaches.

    GS Cath Cox ($3)
    GA Sharelle McMahon ($5)
    WA Liz Watson ($2)
    C Laura Langman ($5)
    WD Selina Gilsenan ($4)
    GD Mo’onia Gerrard ($3)
    GK Geva Mentor ($4)

    SHOOTER Mary Waya ($2)
    MID Karin Burger ($1)
    DEFENCE Susan Fuhrmann ($1)

TB, Anna Stanley is $3, not $2. So it just got even harder.

Thanks for having Liz W at $2!!!

GS $2 SAM WALLACE (T&T) (very very stylish)
GA $5 SHARELLE MCMAHON (Aus) (THE BEST EVER!)

WA $2 LIZ WATSON (Aus) (can play C too)
C $3 SERENA GUTHRIE (Eng) (can play WD too)
WD $1 KARIN BURGER (NZ) (just cos I love her!)

GD $4 MICHELLE DEN DEKKER (Aus) (toss up with Karla)
GK$2 ROSELEE JENCKE (Aus) (that intercept in the dying moments of the WC in 1991 – I loved talking to her about it at an ANL finals day about half a decade ago).

    Reserves
Goals $4. MARIA FOLAU (NZ) (Noels shows she can play both GA and G and because of the swish – and the hysterical bra tug)
Centre Court $5 LAURA LANGMAN (NZ) (can play WD and C)
Defence $2 BIANCA CHATFIELD (Aus) (played both GD and GK at the top level).

    Thanks Ian et al.

Ha ha, yeah, when I was doing it, I knew a lot of people would like the $2 for Watson. A lot of the prices are based on success in big tournaments and compared to the others on the $3 price, Liz hasn’t had that yet. Not her fault of course, that’s just the way things have gone.

    This was hard!!

    GS – Fowler ($4)
    GA – Medhurst ($4)
    WA – Watson ($2)
    C – Langman ($5)
    WD – Burger ($1)
    GD – Corletto ($4)
    GK – Layton ($3)

    Reserves –
    Attack – Folau ($4)
    Mid – Hadley ($1)
    Defence – Bruce ($2)

My previous comment didn’t upload but I tried to pick on existing combinations from national/international games and my team wouldn’t have much WA cover if Watson was ‘off’ but I’d rely on Medhurst to step up her court craft at the front end. As a Tbirds fan, I missed a lot of my favourite players who played for them at some point in their careers (Harby-Williams, Von Bertouch, Mentor, Gerrard, Ingles, Bulley, Stirling) Thanks NS and Ian for starting this thread.

    WA – Liz Watson ($2)
    c – Laura Langman ($5)
    WD – Ash Brazill ($2)
    GD – Casey Kopua ($5)
    GK – Sharni Layton ($3)

    Shooter – Caitlin Thwaites ($2)
    Midcourt – Paige Hadley ($1)

    Let me try this again

    GS Sam Wallace $2
    GA Sharelle McMahon $5
    WA Anna Stanley $3
    C Laura Langman $5
    WD Ash Brazil $2
    GD Liz Boniello $1
    GK Shamera Stirling $4

    Donna Wilkins $2
    Rebecca Saunders $2
    Benice Mene $3

Sam Wallace @ $2 is a great score, and Sharelle is the 🐐 and would totally dominate if she was playing today’s game. I think she’d combine well with both Wallace or Donna Wilkins (my reserve shooter).

I’ve been a fan of Anna Stanley (Rowberry) for years. Always thought her style of feeding – loves the bullet passes and the quick play – would suite feeding McMahon. Although my first preference for WA is Shelley O’Donnell. Langman is just a natural super fit person, and having her and Brazil working together would be amazing to watch. Rebecca Saunders (bench midcourter) would slot in easy at either C or WA. She has great speed and vision, and is super fit too.

Liz Boniello IMO was one of the best defenders going. I rate her on par with KHW, Julie Corletto etc. She would be a perfect foil for Shamera or Benice Mene (bench defender). Mene has the ability to run out at GD too, and I think she’d work in well with Shamera too.

    Eeeeek, so many choices!

    GS – Irene Van Dyk – $5
    GA – Steph Wood – $1
    WA – Temepara Bailey – $4
    C – Laura Langman – $5
    WD – Karin Burger – $1
    GD – Casey Kopua – $5
    GK – Laura Geitz – $4

    Bench:
    Attack – Caitlin Thwaites – $2
    Midcourt – Liz Watson – $2
    Defense – Jo Weston – $1

I would have loved to see a zippy goal attack like Steph Wood create and make space for IVD. Imagine the speed when combined with Temepara. Also have the option of getting Thwaites on at even GA infront of Van Dyk. What a luxury to have Watson on your bench, able to replace Bailey or come on at centre and push Langman to WD.
Defensively, very pleased to see two legends together. Weston/Kopua combo would be fun to watch too!!
