Following their resounding defeat in the major semi-final against minor premiers the Sunshine Coast Lightning and coming into the 2019 grand final as the underdogs, the New South Wales Swifts knew they had their work cut out for them. For the Lightning, winning their last nine games on the trot, and all three previous games this season against the Swifts, the writing appeared to be on the wall: saying that this game was just a formality to win a third consecutive title and give outgoing champion coach, Noeline Taurua a fairy-tale ending to her time on the Sunshine Coast. Regrettably, for the Lightning, nobody showed that script to the Swifts.
