With the Vitality Netball Superleague starting last weekend, we thought it was a good time to begin this new feature. Each week, we’ll be going over the major netball matches played all over the world in the past seven days, not just including the scores, but also the statistics, tables and schedule of upcoming games. So here is the review of Superleague Round 1, all five games played back to back in Birmingham last Saturday and highlighted by the impressive wins of Thunder, Bath and Mavericks.

In Australia last week, all eyes were on the Bushfire Relief charity match, while in New Zealand, the six ANZ Premiership teams were involved in a pre-season hit out in Otaki. Meanwhile, round two of the Vitality Netball Superleague was an exciting one, with many twists and turns, highlighted by the TV match between Surrey Storm and London Pulse on Monday.

In New Zealand, they’re getting ready this week for the opening round of the new ANZ Premiership season. Meanwhile, we’ve seen three rounds of the Vitality Netball Superleague completed. London Pulse again played in the TV game on Monday, this time against Celtic Dragons. After an even start, Pulse gradually got right on top, and they came away with a huge 31 goal win.

Well, the Coronavirus has had a big effect on netball over the past seven days. Lots of netball all over the world has been postponed or cancelled altogether. In the UK, the fourth round of the Superleague couldn’t be completed. Two games were played before the competition was suspended for the foreseeable future. In New Zealand, the opening round of the new ANZ Premiership season was completed, but the decision has now been made to postpone the rest of the competition for two weeks. Two weeks seems optimistic in the current environment, but let’s hope that’s the case. Otherwise, who knows when the next edition of the NS Scoreboard will be…

So anyway, where were we before we were so rudely interrupted…
Last weekend, we saw the return of the ANZ Premiership. Matches were only of 48 minutes duration and all played in one venue, the Auckland Netball Centre. But wasn’t it great to just have some actual netball back. And the favourites, Pulse really stamped their authority on the competition with a dominant victory over Stars in the rematch of last year’s grand finalists. There just doesn’t seem to be a weak link in this Pulse team. 2019 rookie Maddy Gordon is a year older and wiser now and even in this team of stars, she shone enough to be awarded the match MVP. Then there is new signing Kelly Jury at the back, picking up an incredible 9 gains. It will take a mighty effort to beat the Pulse this year.

Last weekend, we saw round 3 of the ANZ Premiership. The match everyone was looking forward to was the last game of the round between the defending champions, Pulse, and the young Mystics side which has shown early promise this year. And the game didn’t disappoint. For the first three quarters, there was barely a goal separating the two sides. It was an intense battle, with the pressure created by the strong defence of both teams, forcing errors. Pulse eventually gained the upper hand in the last quarter and ran away with a seven goal win, but that’s perhaps not a true indication of the relative merits of the teams.

Last weekend, we saw round 4 of the ANZ Premiership, and it produced the first draw in the competition’s short history. In the first game of the round, Mystics consolidated their place in the top 2 with a good 5 goal win over Tactix. Tactix got out of the blocks quickly and led at 1/4 time before Mystics gradually got on top, thanks largely to the efforts of Grace Nweke (38/40), Peta Toeava (25 assists) and Sulu Fitzpatrick (5 gains).

Last weekend, we saw round 5 of the ANZ Premiership, and it was clearly the closest round so far. We saw the second draw of the competition, and three other games were decided by a combined total of six goals. In the first game of the round, Pulse did just enough to defeat Steel 40-37. Steel gave the premiers an almighty fright and with not long to go, actually had a chance to draw level. Sadly however, Steel shooter Jen O’Connell went down with a serious knee injury, and lost possession in the process. It’s subsequently been confirmed that O’Connell has ruptured her ACL. Having already lost Georgia Heffernan for the season, Steel’s shooting stocks were badly depleted when they had to back up again the following day.

Last weekend, we saw round 6 of the ANZ Premiership, and it was another great round of netball. In the first game of the round, Mystics came out on top in a topsy-turvy battle of Auckland. Mystics led 15-11 at 1/4 time, before Stars fought back and won the next two quarters to lead at 3/4 time. But Mystics dominated possession in the final quarter and claimed the win 51-47. Mystics then had to back up the following day against Pulse and they were very slow out of the blocks. Pulse totally dominated the first two quarters and led 27-13 at half time. From then on, they appeared to take the foot off the pedal slightly and made several positional changes. As a result, Mystics came storming back. 11 goals downd at 3/4 time, they sensationally closed to just four goals behind with two minutes left.

Last weekend, we saw round 7 of the ANZ Premiership, the last round based solely out of the Auckland Netball Centre. Unlike previous rounds, there were no last minute nail-biters and no matches close enough for the awarding of a bonus point to the loser. But it wasn’t all one way traffic. After Pulse accounted for Magic easily on Friday, they backed up on the Saturday with a much tougher match against Stars. In fact, they trailed by two at 3/4 time, but as has happened regularly this year, just when it looked as if the defending champs were under pressure, they rose to another level and completely dominated the final quarter.
