Last weekend, we saw the opening round of Suncorp Super Netball played in Brisbane, but it only got off the ground thanks to a lot of scrambling behind the scenes, resulting in some last minute changes to rules, schedules and travel plans. The big talking point was the new 2 goal super shot, in play for the last five minutes of each quarter. And it really came into play in the opening match. Firebirds played well from the start, against the more fancied Lightning and had them under real pressure. Up stepped Steph Wood with a brilliant display of shooting from the 2 point zone, and turned the game around in Lightning’s favour. They went on to win convincingly, almost all down to dominating that power play period in each quarter.

In the past week, we’ve seen two full rounds of Suncorp Super Netball played. We will have to get used to this condensed nature of the competition as the same thing is happening in the coming week. Round two last weekend began with an upset win by Thunderbirds over Giants and featured the emergence of Adelaide goal attack Georgie Horjus. Then came a Vixens 28 goal demolition on Firebirds. The Sunshine Coast’s four goal win over Magpies was noteworthy for the fact that Lightning won the match without scoring a single super shot. Then came the match of the round. Fever got out of the blocks quickly and they led Swifts at half time, before the move of Sophie Garbin to goal shooter.

Well, what a big nine days it’s been since the last edition of the NS Scoreboard. Excitement and controversies galore in Super Netball, and yesterday, we saw the culmination of the ANZ Premiership season for 2020. A season that was anything but straightforward, ended with a straightforward result, as Central Pulse took out their second ANZ Premiership title in a row. Seen as clearly the strongest team heading into the 2020 season, Pulse had suffered setbacks toward the end of the regular season, and their reign as champions was looking shaky. But all that counted for nothing on the day as the competition favourites just clicked straight back into gear when it mattered most. They defeated the somewhat overawed first time finalists in Mainland Tactix, 43-31.

During the past week, we clicked past the halfway mark in Suncorp Super Netball. Eight rounds were played in the month of August. Round 7 was a replay of the fixtures from round 4 and it led to some interesting results. In round 4, Lightning beat Swifts by 7 and Thunderbirds beat Vixens by 7. Ten days later in round 7, both results were exactly reversed. This time, Swifts beat Lightning by 7 and Vixens beat Thunderbirds by 7. These wins put Vixens and Swifts at the top of the ladder. Also in round 7, Giants had another great battle with Firebirds. In round 4, they couldn’t be separated, playing out a 61-61 draw. This time, it was so close to another draw, with Caitlin Bassett scoring right on full time to see Giants get up 66-65.
