Full time: Aust 60-40
South Africa gave it a red hot go, but fell right away towards the end of that game. I don’t think the final margin was really a fair reflection.
Wouldn’t mind a Kayla/Phoenix circle defense for the Ferns, Jury might just be a bit too slow for Fisher?
Ferns a completely different side in the first 15” against the Roses and go into the break 16-10 up. Three turnovers from the Roses in the latter part of the quarter and the Ferns pounced on all of it. Probably the best 15” I’ve seen from the Ferns since Con Cup. England not doing anything particularly wrong, but Ferns picking ball up in defense and it’s being patiently worked through court. Kersten, Crampton need to keep reoffering.
1/4 time: NZ 16-10
BIG lift in intensity from the kiwis today. It’s like a whole new team. Both bookends, Jury and Wilson playing great games.
I’ve been so impressed with the Diamonds so far, especially the Shooters. They’ve all brought some really good play. Garbin was very good today. Hadley, Bruce, Bueta and Brazill were so solid. The only players I haven’t been that impressed with are JLP and Moloney, and JLP was much better today (plus Moloney was good in WD). I’d like to see more of Garbin and Koenen against England, but we might see Dwyer get a go as well.
@Itba@94 Jury matches up well with Fisher because of her lean over the shot. I think Kelly’s ANZP season out at GD he massively helped with her agility to come out on the 45s and attack ball but also importantly the recover back into the circle. Her and Johnson combined nicely in the first quarter.
Well still early days though, hope she doesn’t fizzle out like she did in the Taini Johnson?
And just like that even stevens at half time – 25-25. With England scoring 10 of the last 12 goals at my count – the Ferns were leading 23-15 before the Roses got a run on. Similar to Q1, but three quick turnovers caused the tide to turn.
EUB replaced Mentor at GK to start the quarter.
Clarke came on at WD with Cobden to the bench part way through.
Ferns unchanged. Be interesting if Noeline gives Nweke a go. I felt Metuarau’s work rate was waning toward half time.Right, off to the gym. Hope the Ferns continue in a similar vein but think the momentum is with the Roses.
I’d love to see Malcolm be brought on for Metcalfe. Nat is out running herself and and her drive to circle seems slow.
Also, still not sold on Fisher. I can’t wait for Eng to verse Aus and Fisher will get her work cut out against Bruce.
England really came storming back to end the half level at 25-25. The whole team lifted.
Fisher – 12/15 – 80%
Housby – 13/14 – 93%Wilson – 22/24 – 92%
Metuarau – 3/3 – 100%Winders on at C. I actually thought Kersten was doing all right, providing a lot of leadership and guidance down the defensive end.
Any more updates on whose winning so far?
England won 49-46 I saw on Stuff.
I really think the commentators need to do what others have done in the past (across different sports also) and that is talk to the players and actually learn how to say their surnames – have heard a lot of butchered attempts over the past two mornings – haven’t watched a SA game yet so not sure if there’s any issues there, but Brazill, Metuarau, Nweke, Karaka, even Taurua this morning was said really badly at one stage – I know a lot have issues with Metuarau but there’s no excuse to get it/them so wrong
