I think SM has chosen the best 12. Agree that there’s not much separating JLP and Moloney but i think Price has a bit more strength and physicality in WD – which can also be a weakness for her when being penalised too much. Also looking forward, price is younger so might as well keep her around to develop for the future.
My prediction for starting 7:
GS Bueta
GA Wood
WA Watson
C Hadley
WD Brazill
GD Weston
GK BruceJust watched the Silver ferns games and excited to see Johnson and Karaka back.
Defence:
As much as i like Burger, i don’t think she is ready to be the starting GD yet, especially without Watson in GK. She is still more suited to WD and wreaks havoc for her opposition there. I find that she just chases too much in GD against opposition like wood or housby, who are dominant playmakers that duck in and out of the circle. Johnson is a genuine option in GD and she looks more comfortable there, but her timing and decision making is still off, which i hope will come back after a full season in anz. She needs to find discipline with contesting ball rather than body/space when running with the GA. I wish i could have seen a bit more of karaka in GD as she seemed to be effective there. Fitzpatrick not quite the same player since her injury. Jury so much better in GK than GD but needs time to get the understanding with the GD candidates, none of whom she has played that much with in the past. Love her long reach but gets flat footed at times. Shame that Rore is moving to the magic so won’t get a chance to develop the combination with Jury at gk that she had built at the pulse.Midcourt:
Crampton has been a bit quiet in the games against the roses and diamonds. But this is why we need a more attacking C because i find Gina often gets taken out of the game by the likes of Brazill or Guthrie. Winders and Kersten play C like WDs, too stationary and not presenting enough options – although i was surprised by how much better Kersten played than in previous series, while winders has had a quiet series so far. I can see what DNT likes about Kersten in that she plays a safe possession game, but this also means that her attacking play gets timid or hesitant at times. Would like to see Saunders start in C with crampton, although i love Saunders’ impact when she comes in at WA. Gordon and Poi will be training hard I’m sure.Attack:
So great to see Wilson back to her previous form! Metuarau and Nweke with first series jitters but have only gotten better through the series. If only we got one more game against either the roses or diamonds! Would like to see Vui play even just 5 minutes. Think Eke and Wilson will start for cwg. Hope Mes is back fit in anz as she could push for a spot, although not sure if she would take place of grace or tiana…Karin needs a fast GK. Jury certainly isn’t and Sulu is slowing fast.
Kersten and Winders are not needed if Karin is to be used at WD, I’m sick of the spluttering midcourt.Gina is very hit and miss. Far to many games of poor play.
Karaka is doing great, Maia shooting is back. But other than those 2 and Karin, nobody else has been useful
Bit late with the starting team. NZ have already changed and taken Jury & Johnson off! SA has started very well.
For second half I’d take Crampton off and put Saunders on. Gina isn’t having enough impact and has given away two turnovers with sloppy passing.
1/2 time: NZ 28-25
SA right in this. But then, they were only one goal further back at half time against Australia, and ended up losing by 20. So let’s see how they go here. But encouraging signs.
SA in front!
3/4 time: SA 39-38
NZ had levelled up but Venter scored right on 3/4 time to put them back in front again. Wow, this would be big if they could win this. Still expecting nZ to come out on top but you never know.
NZ holds on, but what a performance from South Africa!!!
I’d love to see Klau on GK. She did well against Cardwell yesterday
1/4 time: Eng 14-12
After a fast start by Australia, the Roses hit back and take a 2 goal lead to the break. Again, it’s hesitancy from the Australian midcourt leading to errors. 8 turnovers in that Q is way too many, although England have had 7 as well.
I don’t like to complain about umpiring, but the female umpire is starting to make a lot of unusual decisions. That Hadley “not wholely in the circle” call was objectively wrong, it was clear from the camera angle.
Cardwell’s been a revelation. I personally think she’s far more dominant at GS than Harten. The English attack end just feels unchallenged. The Australian midcourters don’t seem to trust Bueta’s hold even though she’s taking in everything. Wood has been doing pretty much all the difficult feeding and play-making.
1/2 time: Eng 27-25
The Roses have had the answers so far. That Q was more controlled by both teams.
