This is not a complaint about the umpiring as they are doing what they do to their ability, but having two UK umpires, the English players know their umpiring style and interpretations and so have been able to play through the quirky calls, some of which are baffling to Aussie players and fans.
The cautions are a bit uncalled for, getting sucked in by Housby’s dramatics a bit3/4 time: Eng 41-40
That last play could come back to haunt Australia. More than enough time to score an equalising goal, but they mucked around and couldn’t even get a shot up. Good defence, but seriously, trust your shooters.
Bueta/Wood combo looking good! The midcourt look hesitant feeding Bueta and it’s definitely frustrating her.
What a quarter. Good tough defensive all-court pressure. You can’t beat it. And…
All hail your new queen Gretel. Good Bueta Best!
Bueta is such a beast at GS, she just needs everyone around her to believe in her more. All the dynamism she has at GA but more concise, controlled and without errors. Wood was great in assisting her and Watson improved as the match went on. If Hadley can have more confidence putting in the feeds the front line will be unstoppable come CWG. Such attacking dominance with so few errors. Good on SM for leaving them out for the whole match as well, I’m sure it would have been tempting to make changes at times. Klau was really good all things considered as well.
Fisher had a nightmare introduction, that might have sewn up SDL’s place at CWG.
Full time: Aust 58-46
I kinda feel vindicated as I’ve been wanting to see Gretel at GS for ages. She is just SO suited to that position. Sure, you miss out on a bit of her defence, but you also miss out on some turnovers. 41/42 with 1 solitary turnover for the game. Brilliant.
And Bueta and Wood only missed 1 attempt each, but both misses were rebounded by Bueta and scored from.
Well that’s how they adjust! Well done Australia.
I really hope this is Klau cementing the starting GK bib now. She adjusts so much better when things aren’t going her way.
As much as I love Romelda Aiken, I think it’s such a shame that the Firebirds didn’t prioritise the Bueta/Dwan circle more last season. Aside from the fact that I think it would have been a dominant combination for them going forward, it would also have given Gretel more opportunity to work on her GS game week in week out and been a great potential partnership for the Diamonds. Now Dwan and Horjus will be fighting for court time.
Bueta is such a beast back at GS. Easily Australia’s top line up today.
Wonder if Firebirds are regretting letting Dwan go. Could have been a real threat with Bueta/Dwan as their shooting combo.
England were so strong for 40 mins. Feel like the substitutions lost them the game. Caldwell was strong at GS and got lost at GA. Malcolm also didn’t offer anything.
Safe to say Caldwell is going to Com Games. IMO stronger GS than Harten. Fisher might miss out due to an inability to play GA.
I think the Aus Com Games team will be the 12 today. Only position up for grabs is the back up middie. Guessing Price though.
Steph Wood best on by a country mile. Shot 17/18, 24 goal assists and an intercept. She was the only one today who fed Bueta the right way.
Cardwell and Housby were excellent for England. Harten probably won’t make the starting 7.
Not only named Player of the Match, but PLAYER OF THE SERIES!
Surrounded by her family and squad, and supported by our Diamonds fans – well deserved and congratulations @gretskies11 💎#GoDiamonds #QuadSeries pic.twitter.com/MD28YgHmXe
