Ekenasio and Nweke are both vitally important. But since we are differentiating them, here’s a stat:
2023 NWC Semi Final – NZ lost by 6
With Ekenasio Without Nweke2024 Quad Series – NZ lost by 1
With Nweke without EkenasioNZ have a better chance of producing another Ekenasio, rather than a Nweke.
Ha ha ha @silverferns1 NZ didn’t “produce” Ekenasio, Australia did but didn’t appreciate what she could bring hence her moving to NZ.
Yes I’m well aware of her being born in QLD @schmeatie you missed the entire point of my post though, so would you say NZ “produced” JLP then and not the Diamonds? Yes she wasn’t born in NZ but Cath Cox was
@silverferns1 add in the two CC games that Toeava played, with Nweke and Ekenasio, we won by 8 and 2.
So according to my verdict Toeava needs to be back in the team 😊@schmeetle Aus definitely played a big part in Ekenasio’s development. But she didn’t come to NZ a complete player. When she first made Ferns, which IMO got there way too fast, but that’s Wai for ya! It still took her a few years to develop her game. She really came to the forefront at 2019 WCs. From there she has become a world class GA. That has more to do with her development in NZ than Aus, respectfully.
@TB it was 8 & 4 :)))
And then got absolutely shredded in melb by like 16 or something outrageous.
@silverferns1 are you gunning for that vacant position in the back third for the Steel? You are very defensive! 😂
Being a netball “product” of somewhere has nothing to do with where someone was born. Ekenasio went through all the development programs and representative squads in Queensland, even playing for the Firebirds (multiple seasons I think?). As has Salmon prior to moving to NZ.
Not that you were originally talking about Cox, but I doubt she even picked up a netball in NZ 🤷♀️ What was she, four? Eight? When she arrived in Australia.
Ditto, not that you were originally talking about Jamie Lee Price – agree she is a development product of the NZ system. Which I will happily mention whenever the SF fans are critical of her style of play 😝
@TB respectfully agree. NZ has brought out the best in Ekenasio.
NZ coaches were going through a phase of selecting a few eligible players that were a little head scratching, in what was interpreted to be “grab them so they can’t then play for Australia” (e.g. Watts? And there was a WD who played for Perth Orioles/Fever).Does anyone recall an interview Ekenasio did a few years ago? I found it fascinating. Eke said one of the main differences between the Diamonds and SF systems was Australia had a “style” of play and players were selected based on how well they fit and contributed to that style, and (in not so many words) that style was replicated down the SSN and representative level. The SF selected the best players in each position and created a game plan that used that talent and skill to best outcome.
I think what’s interesting now is that the story appears to have flipped – all the commentary about Noeline’s “process” and formulaic game style and players not being selected that don’t fit the style vs the Diamonds being able to play a variety of styles by putting out players and combinations with different skills and styles. I think the biggest change to Diamonds playing styles is in the defence end; switching up one-one, box, even zone defence albeit nowhere near as intimidating as SF zone defence.
@Schmeetle. I am one of those re JLP, didn’t like her style at Magic and still don’t but when she moderates it she’s great. More of the MZ WD, imo, now play it.
Pulse plays more man on like the Australian players which is why, I feel, ANZ teams struggle against them. MSB also backpacks her opposite.- This reply was modified 1 month, 3 weeks ago by Maryann.
@Maryanne may be JLP learnt from Joline Henry? The original proponent of the “coat hanger”…
I remember when Ameliaranne Wells 1st played for the Silver Ferns.
Had no idea who she was, and looked like a frightened little puppy Dog,
Didn’t think she would be any good, but gladly proved wrong, did take about 5 years to get to her best.@mcLeod, I remember that game well. Never even played a game in the ANZ, albeit was contracted to a team. She looked scared witless. After that game, where she did well, she was making great strides. Then I recall a game (I think International, maybe Australia) where she looked terrified about being bumped and in the end was taken off. It was not longer after that than her pregnancy with Ocean was made public. Since then she’s steadily moved up and up and now is well established and playing some of the best netball I’ve seen.
Interestingly the ANZ players who didn’t tour in January played much better at the beginning of the season this year. I guess it was because they got a Christmas break and then had the pre-season with their teams.
@schmeetle re Henry: FACTS! 😂😂
@TB I’m sure Madi Browne is still receiving chiropractic treatment from a few of Henry’s best 😂
