I think this squad truly reflects good development for the next cycle.
TPSR has made herself unavailable, and apparently Sam Winders is taking a break from netball
And there we go! To all the people doubting Walmsley being a SF so early. Now this doesn’t mean she’ll be picked for any upcoming squad, but having her there clearly
means they want to fast track. Again I doubt she’ll get the opportunity to play any test/ but it shows NNZ will try anything at this point.I believe she made the call pre world champs that it would be her last international gig.
Walmsley promotion to the squad (early) would have came because of Nweke’s injury and SFs coming 4th at Worlds.
It’s evident that the Ferns have come accustomed to having a big GS (Nweke), with Wilson providing a different GS option.I think this is a great call in bringing Walmsley in at the start of this 4 year cycle. I have been very very critical of DNT, but she does have a proven record of making tall GSs very strong players. Having both Walmsley and Nweke as options for the next WC/CWGs, will put us in good stead.
I do feel that this is a mostly underwhelming SF squad although pleased to see Burley added to it. She does have the never give up, grind to the end, attitude so desperately needed. As for Walmsley, she’ll likely get a run this year as I believe Nweke is out for the rest of the season (initial reports I read) although I did then read 6-12 weeks so who knows.
Most disappointing (concerning?) is no Dunn – not even in the Development Squad.
Anyone know if Aliyah has made herself unavailable?
if they want Walmsley to play (for lack of a better term) she better harden the f**k up, and fast – barring injury you can’t just start crying in the middle of an international match as we’ve seen a couple of times – and she’s going to get bashed around a hell of a lot more…I think she’s needs atleast a series up against the mens team first.
stoked for Burley & Lokotui – though I really hope they’re not pushing her too hard too soon in regards to her knee
I like this team. Our defence is strong. Our attack needs work so great to see some young blood coming through in that area. Will be great to see Walmsley grow after her first full anz season. Nweke will be our n.o1 GS for the next 10 years but we still need options if she’s unavailable. We dont want another IVD situation. We also need middies that aren’t hesitant to feed the circle. Overall the future of the ferns look bright. Can’t wait for the 2 test series coming up.
@Kerryn – re Lokotui, she is playing for the Tokomanawa Queens in the Women’s basketball league which is currently running. She looks good! I was a little concerned but she appears to have come back very well from the ACL repair. If you’re in NZ, and can look, have a look at her as its televised. She and Parris Mason are both in the team this year – Dunn is not but was last season.
Uncapped Amelia Walmsley, Kate Burley, Paris Lokotui named in Silver Ferns squad
Taini Jamison Cup squad expected to be named either this Friday or Monday. predictions anyone???
