Bit sick of half baked teams playing the TJ trophy. The SSN is still what 8 months away.
Australia will certainly play their top team.I wondered about George Fisher, but suspect her contract with Steel depends on not playing for Eng/being considered an import anymore …
I wonder whether Clarke will even get a look-in for England for the Taini Jamison Cup. Allison seems to have overtaken her as England’s C and she saw quite few minutes during the world cup too. She also wasn’t in the England squad for 2023/2024 and I know she can still trial for the team but I think the chances for her to be selected seems slim sadly:( Also wonder whether Housby or Cardwell will play for this series. I think it’s time to give them a rest given such a heavy year of Netball for them but without them we realistically only have Tchine and Drakeford-lewis. I hope and wish we get to see Glasgow for England this time!
As for the Ferns, I personally feel that Ekanasio needs a break. She seemed exhausted during the World Cup but that leaves only Metuarau as a legitimate GA option… Will be interesting to see if Whamsely plays in this series too, I actually feel that she’ll play at least 1 game but that’s just my opinion.
Lordy, this forum is a bag of negative nellies, isn’t it? England HAS to start rebuilding depth in the international arena – we’ve had a host of retirements over the past cycle, and people like Clarke and Pitman aren’t getting any younger. The talent selected for the TJ Trophy is more than capable of competing with the best of them – they’ve been carving it up over the past season in NSL. Just because they aren’t playing in Aus doesn’t mean the selected squad isn’t good enough. It’s about time NZ stopped whining about England’s selection and focused on their own…who was it who came 4th in the NWC again? Pride comes before a fall, after all…..
As a Ferns supporter I’d prefer we did our talking on the court.. worry about our own backyard first before we comment on others.
Oh please……….has England won a WC? Ever? They win gold ONCE (CWG), come second for the first time (WC) and all of sudden their second rated team is strong enough to take on anybody? And we’re meant to praise them and be happy about this selection?
If NZ sent none of their stars and their second team to play England with their top line-up. I bet players like Housby, Cardwell and few others would openly rubbish NZs selections. They are definitely not afraid to say what’s on their minds.I also think England do not rate NZ. Do we all honestly think if they were playing Aus, at this exact same time (6/7 weeks after WC) that they would send this same team? And use this “rebuilding phase” as a poor excuse? Highly doubt it.
@TB I seem to remember eight years ago that England sent a young, inexperienced team to a test series and did get roundly beaten – in the same way that Aus sent a young, inexperienced team to play England over here and got beaten as well.
This is the nature of sport – it ebbs and flows. All those selected are in the England programme and are very capable indeed. Maybe stop worrying about the “stars” and start worrying about those on the court….they’re more than able to cause an upset. And how embarrassing would THAT be for NZ….
@Fluffy those teams you mentioned still had stars in them, with international experience.
The 2013 series, where England beat Aus. Aus still had big names in their team Cox, Gerard, Hallinan etc. Players were left out due to injury. From memory NVB injured her finger (I think) right at the beginning of that series. LA named a very young Kim Rav, who hadn’t even played a domestic game. I remember people questioning her selection and having a go at LA about it. That was just for 1 player!I have no doubt that this 2nd rate England team will be competitive. But that’s not my point. Using this international platform as a “developing” thing seems so amateurish. IMO international netball is the highest level you can go, only the best should be selected. Understandable if there is injury, but that’s not the case here. They didn’t name one player from their WC campaign. Please name a time when NZ/Aus has ever done that?
Heck there was a time when England use to get thrashed by both NZ and Aus very regularly. Those games are on YouTube. Back then, both teams could have easily sent their third ranked teams, and still would have won. Yet they never did.
