You are right TB. The holding style she plays, where she plays behind the defender and protects that back space, requires greater height. With the English and Aussie defenders practising defending that style against Fowler, Aiken and the likes, week in week out, means they become very good against the holding shooter, and when they come up against a shooter that is less than 190cm, they actually get tips and deflections even on the high pass, unless it’s pinpoint accurate. Wilson hasn’t got that connection yet, except for MRB may be, and also, she tends to run in to the same space as Ekenasio. So it’s not that she is not a good player, but that she doesn’t combine well with the current attackers, the game style that DNT wants, and that the defenders have become more adept at defending taller holding shooters.
I think she could play GA, but i find she is a bit static for a GA, which i think comes from her GS style too. She needs to learn to better time her runs in GA and to constantly provide that option running towards the ball, not always running away in to the back space. Will also need to become comfortable with mid-long range shots.
I think the shot is the easiest thing for Maia to rectify. She has a beautiful long shot on her.
Netball New Zealand has extended the contract of head coach Dame Noeline Taurua to finish out the international calendar in January, as she looks to consider her coaching future in 2024.

Ekenasio having a break for the Nations Cup series. Is TPSR back? If not, I wonder who will get promoted to the Ferns? Unless they take Maia Wilson to cover GA?
Just saw that on the Ferns IG and came straight here.
Really hope Tiana is working on her fitness to grab the opportunity with both hands. She has the ability to be the Kiwi Steph Wood of her generation. However is only able to function as an impact player currently, not a 60 minuter.
I assume Wilson will get the nod to be back-up GA.
Also Noels may take one of Malesala or Georgia Heffernan as an additional squad member and pick her 12 on the day as another option?
Just re-read the Ferns 2023/24 squad pre-release and this is what was mentioned about TPSR:
“Shooter Te Paea Selby-Rickit was unavailable for the international season.”
Contrasting to Gina Crampton:
“Midcourter Gina Crampton was not considered for selection having announced that she is taking some time away from the game, including missing next year’s ANZ Premiership.”If she’s fit I would take TPSR over Wilson for that second GA spot. On Te Paea if she wants to make herself available or focus on Tactix pre-season after her extended travels post NWC.
I saw mention, on this form I think, that TPSR said the World Cup was her last International.

My concern is still in our midcourt. Even with the two wins in the Constellation Cup, our midcourt did not look flowing. If I’m being honest, I’m still surprised we pulled off those wins.
I’m still on the Peta Toeava bandwagon. I do think she would strengthen our midcourt, and she is also the best feeder to Nweke. So I’m hoping her fitness is up to standards, and she’ll be an option for selection.
So if the midcourt is kept the same, then I’d take Maia Wilson as the fourth shooter. If they select Toeava, then I think they could take Heffernan or Malesala.
Apparently team for the Nations Cup is being named tomorrow.
I think Taurua will take a squad of 14-15 to the UK. Something like the below:
Metuarau, Nweke, Walmsley, Wilson, 1 of K Heffernan or Malesala.
Gordon, G Heffernan, MRB, Souness, maybe 1 other – a fully fit Toeava perhaps?
Burger, Burley, Jury, Karaka, WatsonI wouldn’t be surprised to Shannon Saunders named.
In their training clips I saw Walmsley running out at GA with Nweke at GS. I’m not a fan of the tall timbers, but interested to see how this works.Ferns mid court is horribly inconsistent. Souness just frustrates me so much. I feel Poi and Saunders might get a go.
I’m picking 15 will get named, 4 shooters, 6 middies, 5 circle D
It depends who Souness is playing with. If you look at past games, she works well with Toeava and Poi.
Her and Gordon haven’t seemed to click at international level. I do think she plays better when Metaurua is at GA.Yes Souness plays well with Poi, 2020 Nations Cup example. But she doesn’t with Mila R-B, Heffernan isn’t a C option in big games, so really is just a WD, so that limits the mid court options greatly, so I’m thinking that is another reason why Toeava will miss out again.
