I think we need to remember, Burger has never had a standout game @ GD for the Ferns. Her strongest position IMO is WD (for the Ferns), where she’s had some really strong performances and dominated.
So I think it may be a big gamble/mistake to take MSB, just so that Burger can have the GD bib. I think Karaka is very important to have in this team, and definitely the more suitable option. Her and Burger offer different styles in both GD & WD, which will be very beneficial for the Ferns.
I’ve always thought Karin has only played well in GD, in front of Jane. I don’t think she pairs well with either Jury or Karaka.
defence against a holding shooter = Heffernan C, karin WD, Jane GD, Jury GK
defence against moving circle = Heffernan/Souness C, Karaka/Heffernan WD, Karin GD, Jane GKSomeone drop some panadol around to DNT and crew. I can only imagine the conversations being had and hard phone calls that will need to be made.
Are Watson and Fitzpatrick a go regarding injury?
Do you take a 5th shooter?
Do you take two specialists WA?
How do you use your reserves (experience or bolter)? That and the coffee. I imagine discussions have been round the clock since Sunday afternoon.
MSB deserves a place in the 12, she has been in super form this ANZ, unlike a couple players who will get in the team because there isn’t anyone else.
Final prediction
Nweke, Ekanasio, TPSR, Wilson
Crampton, Gordon, Heffernan, Souness
Burger, Watson, Jury, KarakaReserves:
MSB
MRB
ToeavaJust to throw something out there…
Greer Sinclair won an award at Tactix presentations and was photographed. Poi, TPSR, Burger also won awards but not photographedim pretty sure I can see TPSR in a video sitting down on their story…
In the final IG story, Poi is standing next to MDH as they watch her reel. Then as the camera pans to the rest of the crowd TPSR is sitting down with Burger standing next to her.
But you’re right – unusual that they post a picture of Sinclair and not the others.
Battle for final midcourt spots in Silver Ferns’ World Cup squad went down to wire
*This article has just gone live as of 5am this morning.
Possible Silver Ferns’ Netball World Cup squad:
Shooters: Grace Nweke, Ameliaranne Ekenasio (c), Maia Wilson, Te Paea Selby-Rickit
Midcourt: Gina Crampton, Kate Heffernan, Whitney Souness, Maddy Gordon
Defenders: Karin Burger, Jane Watson, Kelly Jury, Phoenix Karaka
Travelling reserves: Tiana Metuarau, Peta Toeava, Sulu Fitzpatrick
That’s the most likely and safest choice for Noel’s.
I just think Peta is the key to unlocking Grace… so I’d still put her in ahead of Whitney. BUT Noel’s has invested too much time in Souness to not have her their.. so this is looking like the team to defend the title.
The reserves will be the interest takeaways for me

I feel like the midcourt has options especially at C. 3 WA 3C 3 WD. The midcourt needs challenging and competition to earn the starting bib.
MSB unlucky to find her form perhaps a season too late.
Whilst I’d love Dame Noels to be brave and drop Maia to reserves and take MSB instead, I’d take:
Nweke
Ekenasio
Selby-rickett
Wilson
Crampton
Toeava
Gordon
Heffernan
Burger
Karaka
Watson
JuryReserves:
Souness
MSB/metaurau (if a 5th shooter is a must)
Fitzpatrick2 hours to go…
