Laughable and yet the ferns slump to their worst outing since 2018. Yes Maia had a great individual tournament, but we still lost and our middies couldn’t release that ball fast enough to her. Okay, your right, Walmsley was an overreaction- but I’m tired of this safe regime Noel’s plays at. She picked them for their “experience” and yet they came close to finishing 5th smh.
Yes Dunn, but I think she showed domestically why she hasn’t donned the black dress in 5 years.
Here’s the shooters that I see for the next cycle:
Nweke, Walmsley, Tiana, Williams, Wilson, Tūī, Samason*, Fisher*Samason, could be our answer for a GA, obviously she’d have to commit to nz. Fisher , even though she was named with the wider squad for England- she honestly has a better chance here in NZ, than staying with the roses and missing out on big tournaments. If Noel’s stays, she’s has shown interest in George.
Walmsley is not even close to making the Ferns, but hey by all means put her up against Bruce.
Maia did a excellent job, but the below par feeding from the WA’s and C’s made it so much harder than it should have been.@NetballFan212 It’s our worst outing in WC history. If the middies are the problem then that’s not Maia’s fault. You could go through all the ANZ teams and find that same problem. Attackers afraid of letting the ball go to their shooters, but for some reason people blame the shooter for this? Baffling to say the least.
I’m not sure what you are talking abouts with regards to Dunn, she is the most accurate in ANZ Premiership history and the only reason she hasn’t been picked for the ferns was because of fitness issues. We had the fittest team ever at this WC and it did wonders for us didn’t it?
I think you are reaching with your picks for shooters, Nweke yes, Maia, yes, the rest, meh. GA remains open for anyone who wants to take it but they need to turn and shoot whilst still maintaining a high level of accuracy. I don’t know if any of your picks meet that criteria.
What about Georgia Heffernan? I haven’t seen her in the ANZ comp but from memory she was quite good in Fast 5 last year wasn’t she? Does she have potential?
Team for the TJT should be (given Nweke and Watson are unavailable):
shooters should be:
Malesala*, Wilson, Dunn, Metuarau, Walmsley*middies should be:
Toeava, MRB, Gordon, Heffernan, Souness, Poi
defenders should be:
Jury, Karaka, Burger, MSB, Stythe*
I would rest TPSR and Ekenasio for Con Cup plus I can’t see them being around for the next WC so that’s why I haven’t chosen them.
Silver Ferns may as well throw the kitchen sink at it considering they’ve hit rock bottom (I hope). That’s a massive risk leaving TPSR and Ekenasio out. It’s allgood to blood new players, but there’s still got to be a balance. We don’t want to be spending the next few years re-building confidence, cause we chucked a bunch of young players into the deep end.
I don’t know, I feel I’m on the minority, but going after Fisher makes us look desperate.
We have the players to be great again. The coach and selectors have got to get it right! Need to stop living on past results, as an excuse for dumb decisions. IMO their get-out-of-jail card is Nweke getting injured.
100% Agree on both counts TB.
There is no way TP and Ekenasio are being left out of the next series, that I feel would seal the fate for Nolene and management. They need to win or be very competitive to have a hope of retaining their positions. They are truly living on past accomplishments now.
I don’t think England will bring Housby and Cardwell though. I’ll happily eat my words if they do lol
Samason is brilliant and a real talent but I wouldn’t be picking her as a GA. She is more of a GS who is willing to shoot further from the post. Happy to be proven wrong, though I also hope she doesn’t pick NZ.
Would love to hear everyone’s predictions for the Silver Ferns 2027 NWC Squad of 15!!!
My 2027 squad prediction is:
Shooters
Nweke
Metuarau
Wilson
Williams
SamasonMiddies
Toeava
Heffernan
Gordon
Poi
Reulu-BuchananDefenders
Jury
Burger
Karaka
Sokolich-Beatson
StytheYeah I don’t really understand the Wilson criticism to be honest. The reason the Ferns lost those games was the collapse of the attacking midcourt under pressure. A lot of poor pass choices, none of which involved Wilson. Dunn’s exclusion from the program has been ridiculous, she should obviously be brought in. The Ferns have been good at turning decent international players into dominant stars (Van Dyk, Burger, Ekenasio etc.) but I do think it’s kind of ironic that everyone is calling for Fisher to change when the whole purpose of the ANZP was to supposedly support homegrown talent.
NNZ needs their top midcourters to be playing at higher intensity. If that is not SSN, then it means they need to pick a group of the SAME players and give them consistent international minutes. These constant rotations through the midcourt to give everyone a chance just meant that none of the midcourters could deliver 60 minute performances against top teams. It was particularly mind boggling considering that the player who performed best in her small international stints (Toeava) didn’t even get picked.
Do England have 4 shooters even close to International level, if Housby and Cardwell decide that resting is more important. Remember England only took 3 shooters to the WC and played H and C in all 3 of their last games, without resting them.
The Ferns don’t send B teams to tournaments.I have also been very disappointed with NZ’s performance at the NWC and haven’t mustered the spirit to watch the Bronze medal match. I think a thorough review needs to happen to see where the NZ netball system is lacking.
In my opinion, selections were appropriate and the strongest team was heralded. I think there’s a few factors that have all equally contributed to our poor performance. I do agree that there has been too much rotation in the last 4 years – players are not able to develop connections in the Fern’s environment and there’s no stability. Selectors need to step up and identify talent through trials/ANZP, rather than use valuable and limited International tests during the 4 year cycle as trials. There needs to be an improvement in culture for winning games outside the peak events because the talent is definitely there, but needs to be reviewed.
We need strong NZ players playing in the SSN. ANZP can still remain a strong and competitive league with some of our top players playing in SSN week in/week out. Jamaica and England have key players in the SSN league that come back to their national team and bring that intensity, fitness, and elevated level to the next generation. It’s very egotistical for NNZ to think they have a good enough league after the results we have had in recent years.
I do think Noeline brings something special to the Fern’s but I think our players have lost some of their natural flair and instinct. I really look forward to the growth we show in the next cycle, because we definitely have the players to win the NWC but the pathways/processes are not working at the moment.
Noel’s and Deb Fuller coach a very defensive set up. Heffernan in a WD come C, Gordon a WD come C. They were our 2 C options. Yet Souness had training for 18 months a C to be the next Bees Knees in that position, yet she was used mostly as a WA.
Yes I know I go on about Poi, but her natural flair won the Con cup in 2021. I was at game 4 and got to see up close, how she outplayed both Moloney and Watson L, with her zipping all over the court.
But I understand she is not part of Noel’s plans, as struggles with playing the zone style. Just stop taking away the natural flair of young players. -
