The inside netball podcast from today with deb fuller is a good listen. I wonder if she was referring to Winders when she was speaking about players going for everything and getting themselves penalised out of the game
Please no to Mes again! Yes she’s playing good netball this year but she cracks under pressure all the time.
Interesting to read that many would include MSB as reserve – I’ve forgotten how good she has been this season!
I think the ferns are good enough to win over England and SA based on their recent form, but i think the team has to be selected especially to counter Australia and Jamaica.
For Jamaica, i think Nweke should start but if Sterling is having a field day with a holding shooter, swapping to a mobile circle with Mes and Eke could be a good plan B. So for that reason, Mes gets the edge over TPSR. TP’s relaxed passing will get deflected by the reach of Sterling, Ward, Dehaney, Latanya Wilson any day.
For Australia, the main problem is who will cover Wood and Liz Watson. I think Burger is the only GD that is fast enough to cover Wood, with Karaka and Jane Watson (not yet back to peak-peak form imho) being just a step too slow. The question is then do you play Heffernan in WD or keep her at centre and take a strong WD option? I think Crampton and Toeava are both likely to go, so whether Souness or Gordon gets the 4th midcourt spot, will depend on where Noeline wants to play Heffernan – Souness, if Heffernan is used to counter Watson, or Gordon to match up on Watson’s speed, if Heffernan stays in centre.
Where do you guys think Heffernan and Burger should be played against Australia?
It would be really good if we could clone Heffernan or Burger 😂
Deb Fuller was very interesting to listen to. It seems the replacement player thing will be rather difficult, so choosing the 3 players to go will be a challenge.
I also go the vibe that if a player is injured during a game, then the bench players will be verstile, so does that rule out say, Wilson, Toeava, Fitzpatrick.
The Ferns have a 5 week build up, which I understand includes a camp on the SC Coast.
In regards to players with high penalty count or clumsy play, Winders is certainly one, and also Maddy Gordon.
Oh and I’m still not ruling out Poi, as to me she is the only one who has played out of her usual position this ANZ.Winders has had a really low penalty count over the past 4-5 games – so looks like she may have addressed that (also seems to coincide with the team actually starting to play better)
comparing the penalty stats between the NZ & Aus comp games, I don’t think NZ has anything to worry about getting penalised out of games – regardless of who goes
I think Karaka maybe the preferred GD, with Burger at WD and Heffernan C.
I am a massive fan of Burger. She has great speed, elevation and reads the play well. However I do find her ineffective at GD when playing Diamonds. Wood and Austin are use to playing against that style, as the majority of GDs in Aus play like that. I do think she is better at WD, and really causes some damage there. I would have her at GD against all the other nations!
This may be left field but I think Manu’a could be a bolter
I think Fitzpatrick will be in the (extra) 3. I feel what she brings off the court will be just as important than on-court. She would be a huge motivator for the 12, and she’ll continuously challenge them. Her knowledge, experience and that motherly nature can/will be vital for the girls. And if she’s called upon, I have no doubt she’ll perform.
It’ll be a great way for her to go out!
Lol @Kerryn – you’re right re Georgia Heffernan 😂
I think Karin is in career best form at the moment (albeit domestically). What I will say is that previously she hasn’t paired as well with Karaka or Jury, so if her and Jane aren’t in the circle together, I’d absolutely play Karin at WD.
I keep harping on about it but could Karaka’s role in this team be at WD like Rore back in 2019? Get her hands over the feed and try get ball lifted for Burger and Watson to intercept? At least as a change up to a more traditional WD – Burger, Heffernan, even Gordon.
Re Poi, I felt like she didn’t put her best foot forward in Constellation Cup at WA, but the last time she played there was 2019 for Magpies. She’ll be better for a season there under her belt, and we know she’s comfortable at C..
I know Karaka was used at WD for the Jamaica series but that was more because Johnson and Heffernan were unavailable.
But I think she could do damage there at NWC. You also keep her bringing ball through court abilities.
Yup, some speedy WAs will cut her up, but could be a good secondary option.
