Agree @Wewood I was exactly the same, couldn’t understand why she was selected. But became a fan after those 2 games, where she played a big part in winning.
I don’t see her as an impact player. Crampton would be a better impact player, she has a steady hand and experience in the big games. Toeava has that x-factor, and is a master at feeding Nweke. She was sending that ball over both Bruce and Klau heads. I know it’ll be a different story against Sterling, but I’d like to see her take on that challenge.
I really hope Noeline is bold with her selections!! 3 shooters, Peta and MSB included pls!
I am a bit confused. Isn’t taking 3 shooters a massive risk. Sure you can have one in the reserves, but I presume that teams will have their game day 12 so if mid match you have an injury you cannot bring in an additional player, rather if there’s an injury and a player cannot play a subsequent match they can be a permanent replacement in the game day 12.
I guess I am trying to point out that if you were in a major match and Nweke went down, then with only 3 shooters you may not have a suitable replacement in the moment it is required.
Can someone clarify this?Squad of 12 + 3 additional is exactly that. Bringing one of the ‘additional three players’ into the 12 means that strict requirements must be met and once it happens the player that has been replaced can’t return to the 12 at any time during the tournament. I’m assuming game day will be 10 players of the 12 named.
I really don’t think they’ll risk taking 3 shooters in the 12, it will be too much load on the 3 chosen through the week
Why would they take 3 shooters, the WC is 8 games in 10 days. Do you want to see Ekenasio, Nweke and whoever else flogged to a standstill. Ferns only have 2 easy games. We all know Maia is not a GA option.
I wouldn’t take only three personally. I remember a tournament where both Folau and Tuavaiti were injured and Brown and Halpenny had to carry the team through a number of qualifying games. They were exhausted. That was with four shooters. Taking only 3 plus a reserve is a massive risk.
I believe as per all internationals, it will still be 12 for every game, no idea why the ANZ/SSN/VNSL dropped it to 10
my silver ferns starting 7:
GS – Grace Nweke
GA – Ameliaranne Ekenasio
WA – Gina Crampton
C – Kate Heffernan
WD – Michaela Sokolich-Beatson
GD – Karin Burger
GK – Kelly JuryLoving what MSB is doing this season. Possibly the starting WD if Burger is in GD.
Small nod to Jennie Wyllie too. You know why!
This would be my squad:
Nweke
Ekanasio
Wilson
Metuarau
Heffernan
Crampton
Souness
Sokolich-beatson
Burger
Watson
Karaka
JuryReserves:
Selby-Ricket
Toeava
FitzpatrickProbably controversial that I’d take Metuarau over Selby-Ricket but I feel like Wilson’s form in GS this season has been really good and I personally feel the Ferns need to give a chance to Metuarau to see how she performs at a pinnacle event. I wouldn’t have 2 specialist WA in the squad too which is Metuarau has the edge for me as she can also play WA. IMO Souness hasn’t had the best season but still think Noeline will still pick her anyways. Surely Sokolich-Beatson also has to be included too as her game this year has definitely elevated to another level.
I would start:
GS: Nweke
GA: Ekanasio
WA: Crampton
C: Heffernan
WD: Sokolich-Beatson
GD: Burger
GK: WatsonI quite like that team @coookiesnjam I would possibly only change the reserves to Gordon (because she cover all mid court) and don’t think I would take Sulu solely based on carrying an injury – but not quite sure who I would put in – as you want someone who can hit the ground running – maybe with MSB in the team you could afford to take an extra middie?
shooters – Grace – Ameliaranne – Maia – Te Paea
Middies – Gina – Kate – Whitney – Peta/Michaela
Defenders – Karin – Kelly – Jane – Phoenix
reserves – Peta/Michaela – Sammy Winders – Sulu
