Stanton is a GS, she’s similar to Garbin. Garbin has worked very hard on her court work though and has been given more opportunities so she’s a more passable GA. I feel like Stanton should have moved to Melbourne or Adelaide, even NZL. I know she’s gotten a bit of a bad reputation because of the Medhurst situation and some articles she’s been in where she came off entitled, but what she showed in 2017 and the beginning of last year was quite impressive in my opinion. She’s certainly up to SSN level.
I heard that the Vixens are signing an experience GA. Could they have lured Steph Wood? Being coached by Simone could rejuvenate her game..

Potentially. With Langman leaving, someone who really brought the Lightning mid court up a notch, Wood may have felt prompted to move. But that still surprises me because although a change in coach might be tempting for her, by all accounts she seems to live the Sunshine Coast.
My only question then would be who would be the Lightning GA? Glasgow? Hodges? Stanton? The shooting circle wouldn’t be as fast with Glasgow or Stanton at GA, both great in moving circles when they’re at GS.I heard they have signed an interstate player with SSN experience and a VIC pathway player. I don’t know how experienced the interstate player is just that they have played SSN. One is a GA and the other a GS/ GA.
I heard this when there was still quite a few rounds remaining. I posted it in here. Bec Webster is their GM and runs list management and she was in Brisbane to hold the discussions. I heard this again at the GF.
As much as I would love it to be Wood. I would be shocked if it is. Yo be coached by not just Simone but McMahon as well would be attractive. The more time passes the more I think it is Glasgow. Glasgow informed TBirds very early she was leaving.
Stanton gets a bad wrap. It’s a shame she is playing behind the world’s best GS as GS is easily her best position. I actually would have loved Lightning to pick her up in place of Proscovia.
Cosh is actually a GA. So it might be that if Stanton isn’t resigned the Fever take Cosh as their third shooter and sign an extra midcourter.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nyah Allen at Lightning next year. Most likely as a TP but who knows.
I reckon Glasgow is going to Vixens but the other GA could be McDonald as she is already in their environment.
I also would love to see Allen go to Lightning as a TP.
Interesting you mention Cosh could be their third shooter and then a good GA and WA swing. I think that’s a good idea also. They just need to make sure they can push Cosh into GA without problems. That would open up space to bring in another midcourter which would could really play any position but most likely C/WD since Francis is the only solid WD option on the team at the momentYeah I think Wood would stay put, she was the first player ever to sign with Lightning and gave up opportunities at the Swifts to commit to a team that had literally no other players. She clearly is happy being home and has a life on the Coast with her partner and a house. I doubt she’ll ever leave unless she isn’t offered a contract in the future.
I also would have liked to have seen Stanton instead of Proscovia. A circle of Stanton and Koenen is far more mobile and has more range than Koenen and Proscovia. I really didn’t think we’d see Proscovia back at Lightning tbh.
It doesn’t look like Hodges will get a contract which is really such a shame. I don’t know what she should do, I guess VNSL? It might almost be worth moving state just to play in a different State League/ANL pathway so that the coaches in that state get a better look at her. I’d take her instead of Sinclair or McDonald that’s for sure.
This is very easy to say in hindsight, but I think if we had seen Cosh and ATN play the other way around (at least once) the Fever might have been in a better position to win. ATN shot some horror games at the end of the rounds and if Fever had gotten into the Major SF it could have been different. We’ll never know, but hopefully it’s a combination they explore next year, because Cosh really has a far better shot in my opinion.
Yes, my money is on Glasgow and Sacha McDonald. Sacha McDonald is a GA / WA so also opens up the opportunity for them to sign Smith who they are training as a WD / C. Actually McDonald and Smith have played
Together since VIC u 12 so would be a nice story if they got their first contracts together.Fever have Anstiss for WD? I was thinking if they consider Cosh a shooter they could sign another C \ WA as they only have Charles as an attacking C.
Stanton unfortunately is not a very strong player. She is nowhere near as good as Garbin.
She has beautiful height, and quite mobile. But her shot is very hot and cold. I cannot see any other teams trying to go for her. However in saying that, maybe a new environment/new team will help pick up her game?
Are the Vixens really going to sign Smith, Eddy, Weston, Mannix and Dehaney? Even if Smith is training to be a C, is she really enough of an option that they could play Kumwenda/McDonald/Moloney/Smith as their attack end if Glasgow had a stinker and Watson was injured? I really rate Smith but I think Elle McDonald is far more of what they need, she was so good in the opportunities she got.
Speaking of Glasgow, It’s just so uncommon for a player to announce she’s leaving a club before the season has even finished, leaving her partner, family and friends unless she has some sort of agreement or intent from another club. I would assume, Glasgow would have replaced Gooden on the bench as an impact player but Horjus and Potgeiter would have been the main duo. I think Glasgow showed some great signs in 2019, but Obst didn’t give her an opportunity this year to work her way back to that position from injury. If Vixens signed her, it would be a great opportunity for her to develop her GA game. I mean if they can turn Thwaites who’s been playing one position for her entire netball career and turn her into a goal attack, Simone and Sharelle can literally do anything. They’ll most likely elevate Sacha Mcdonald as well.
Yeah I’m interested to see if either of McDonald or Honey are signed by Vixens. And Smith. Vixens are really spoilt for options here but also feel bad for those who are going to be stuck as TPS.
Yeah Glasgow’s early announcement makes me wonder why she hasn’t been announced yet by a team. Hopefully it doesn’t mean anything.
For Fever you’re right, another C would make sense. I think it could really be a C/WA or C/WD as ATN and Cosh both play WA and Francis and Anstiss both play WD. But if Cosh is going to play GA in the future, then I expect a C/WA. Maybe Pitman, Gardner, even Cassidy (although information seems to indicate she is off to Lightning) or maybe on of the Vixnes middies who don’t score a contract.
I’m still curious and concerned about where Shimmin is going to go. As a national player for the Roses, she needs a contract at SSN level otherwise she will need to go play in the UK, but I’m not sure how much she would want to do that. She’s such a great player, real shame Thunderbirds don’t want her
Am I the only one who doesn’t really rate Anstiss as a WD? Obviously Fever did well this year with her there, but I far prefer her at C. I don’t think she really curbed the influence of the WAs she played against. I mean Proud and Watson were really on top of her in the Finals, it was more when she played C that she came into the matches. I’d like to see Aryang developed there next year to go along with her great GD play.
Al_ex they only need to cover an injury from within their 10 for one game (assuming game day squads are 10). If it’s longer term they bring in a TP or a replacement player for the next game/s. Giants have no recognised WA (Hay is developing well there) and who as backup? whilst Watson is the best WA in the world. Swifts don’t have a recognised WD and are very attack heavy in their 10. How many attacking midcourt options does Fever have? Charles and Cosh who is actually a GA so not very different. Thunderbirds have Nankivell and Horjus who can slide over. The lack of clarity on squad sizes has made it tricky.
Anstiss kept Watson to 12 goal assists in the first half of the final. Watson finished the game with a league record for goal assists and feeds in a GF. Whilst in C Anstiss had no goal assists herself. Watson struggled for space in the frost half. I am personally not a big Anstiss fan but credit to her in the GF where off the ball in particular she made Watson work over time in her prelims to be an option and then kept her off circle edge (as much as you can with Watson that is).
As for Glasgow, she didn’t actually announce anything. Glasgow would have signed a letter of intent with another club as that is all that could be signed before the end of the season. Then the contract this week post the GF. It was Thunderbirds who announced it presumably after Glasgow declined their contract offer as it was evident from the announcement that it Was Glasgow that chose to part ways as opposed to Shimmin who was not offered a contract. I agree with the comment that if McMahon can assist Thwaites (and I say assist Thwaites as full kudos goes to Thwaites) to develop into a GA then the same can be done with Glasgow who actually played a reasonable amount of GA as a younger player. If Glasgow wants to recharge her career then she needs to be starting 7 and kudos to her for recognising this. Prior to her ACL Glasgow was one of the extra players invited to train with the Diamonds prior to their departure to Liverpool. With a strong full SSN season Glasgow will be pushing the Diamonds squad.
I’d like to know why TBirds chose Gooden over Hodges? Gooden had unsuccessful stints with both Collingwood and Vixens whereas Hodges was pretty good when Given a decent chance by TBirds.
