Yes I’m happy with this signing too. Like Moloney transitioned well (and with Moloney’s mentoring) I think Allie showed great drive down the court etc… so should skill up well. There’s an article on Melb Vixens website

I think Vixens need McDonald more right now, but Smith will be a huge asset for them in the future so I understand the decision. Watson showed this year that she’s never really going to get benched so if they really believe that Moloney/Smith/Eddy is passable in the case of injury then it was probably the right choice.

In terms of coaches signings – I really, really cannot see LA signing with Collingwood after they have done Rav so dirty.

On top of that – given their money troubles and how awful they have been to Rav, I am starting to suspect more and more that Collingwood will decide not to renew it’s licence at the end of 2021 with SSN.

Collingwood have acted poor and I am not impressed.

Unlucky for Honey to miss out on a spot. Missing 2019 with injury and now missing on 2021. Great for Smith she will be a future star!

                  Thunderbirds have signed Latanya Wilson.

I thought they would’ve gone for local SA talent but hoorah to another import🙄. After the 2021 season, SSN need to start limiting the imports. Having international talent is good and it helps the development of other countries, but the purpose of this league is not to develop other national teams.

Too many imports are hurting the Diamonds and until they introduce a limit, I don’t see them winning another gold medal.

I’m really surprised with Wilson signing, I’ve only seen her play a few games for Celtic dragons and in one she got sent off! Where was she before Celtic Dragons?

Interesting. Reminds me a little of when Vixens signed Dehaney. A great young talent. But just that a young talent with little experience that is coming to SSN primarily to learn. I can see Garrett really fighting for the GD bib now or even Van Der Merwe with Petty in WD (hopefully Nankivell stays in C).

From my perspective it is a disappointing signing as there are local young talents unsigned that could have filled this spot.

Looking at the summer of tennis all being in Victoria in January and states closing borders in response to what is hope fully a small contained covid cluster in SA …. makes me think the chances of next years SSN being in a hub of some form again are quite high.

Interesting thought Tully….maybe have it in Melbourne to reward Melbournians for their huge effort these last months – I was going to write ‘few’ but it was more than a few months….

Wilson is an interesting choice. I understand why they chose an import, especially because I think it would be difficult to justify getting rid of Shimmin just to replace her with someone like Blackman. But they really could have chosen a better import in my opinion, Kwangwa or one of the British GDs probably would have had more to offer. Or even Facey if they wanted to choose a Jamaican. Next season could be quite tough for Adelaide.

Great to see all signings are locked in!

Don’t know anything about Latanya Wilson but I would think Tania Obst knows a bit about her having coached against her at the WYC. She could be another exciting defender like Jodi-Anne Ward.

As for the young local talent who have missed out (Orr, Allen, Blackman, Honey…the list goes on), at the end of the day this is a professional league and not a league to develop young talent. Some of these young players were given opportunities to train/play in the professional environments this year (and last) and obviously haven’t shown enough yet to warrant a contract for next year. Hopefully they will get TP roles at clubs to continue their development.

NB: I’m a real fan of Nyah Allen and was hoping Vixens would sign her instead of Stanton but obviously Vixens decided they needed experience in that end of the court.

Looking forward to a shorter pre-season and an earlier start to the 2021 season! :yahoo:

I have to disagree with you, the ANZP is a professional league and they prioritised young talent over imports (ofc they have restricted imports, but there’s only 2 in the whole league). Now both of their clubs and national teams have depth and talent that will sustain them for a while.

SSN teams and NA in general need to do more to develop young players and prioritise AUS players over imports. The ANL has been replaced so their development will be affected again. I just feel like some of the teams go after imports as a first option rather than a last resort. Some of the imports in the league should’ve been Australian players imho. If TBirds were going to drop Shimmin then at least bring in an experienced import. Wilson could be a great player in a few years time but she still needs to grow and that spot could’ve gone to a home player.

Who exactly would you want to see though? Blackman? O’Shannassy (who I think still has mono)?

ANZP’s prime focus is to develop Kiwi talent, not to provide them with a competitive professional league. The pay gap between Australia and NZL is large and will only grow, and SSN is the league that contributes to world netball. There’s a reason the Kiwi imports to SSN have been their best Ferns player and Australian imports to ANZP have been players who can’t get contracts (with the exception of CBass). If Australian girls want SSN contracts they need to fight for them.

The only teams that have more than two imports are Swifts, Lightning, Collingwood and T’Birds. I doubt Lightning and Swifts will keep their third imports (Haythornthwaite and Proscovia) much longer and Collingwood and T’Birds are obviously the two weakest teams in the competition. There just aren’t that many Australian players who have proven they deserve contracts and haven’t gotten them because there’s an import in the way. Wallam is the only one I can really think of.
