Hi everyone! I remember one of the selectors putting Bruce as GD in her starting 7 which makes her unanimous too right?
I like the thinking I’ve heard about Noelene Taurua’s Wc team, how she put a string veteran in each third to push the players in the absence of time-outs etc.
So maybe with that in mind…
GS: CBass
GA: Austin
WA: Watson
C: JLP
GD: Weston
GK: Bruce
But I do like Bruce in GD with another tall defender like Mannix our back.
So bench:
Wood, Koenan (will make some interesting combos), Mannix (proven ball-winner when switched on), Moloney, Simpson (centre court leader) and maybe Jenner. Some players listed above who would really benefit From the exposure of this environment with some older, steadier heads. Jenner, Austin etc included
No, when I mentioned Watson and Weston being unanimous, I was talking about us here at Netball Scoop. Out of the 8 NS writers who voted, everyone had Watson at WA and Weston at GD. That wasn’t the case with Bruce.
Montyandpoppy who would be your starting wing defence?
Wanted to join the forum and chip in here because I think the Australian team is at a really interesting point and I’m keen to see who gets selected and if Marinkovich decides to shake it up
My team
Shooters: Koenen, Wood, Austin and Bassett (Basset only JUST – would be good to get some of ATN, Dwan, Brice, Glasgow or Horjus involved in the squad because our shooting depth is lowwww at the moment)
Mid court: Watson, Hadley, Price, Moloney
Defence: Bruce, Weston, Mannix, JennerFor some reason I can’t edit my post but can post a new one
Anyway I said I would edit once I had decided on the midcourt so….
Koenen
Wood
Watson
Price
Eddy
Weston
BruceAustin
Bassett
Proud
Hadley
MannixI know there is a lot of love for Parmenter and I think she will get there but not quite yet.
I think Eddy as starting WD is a bit overrated to be honest, yes she is good but I can’t imagine her jumping into the starting spot when you have Simpson and Parmenter up there too as well as WD cover that can come from the likes of JLP, Hadley and Weston.
Eddy is going to be a Diamond but I don’t think starting WD is going to happen this year, or at least I would prefer it to be JLP or Simpson. They are the 4 shooters, defenders and middies I would select. Move JLP there and put Proud at C.
Parmenter doesn’t grind enough for me. Very flashy but keep your player off circle edge, get a strong high consistent hands over and stay in play. Simpson seems to be very under the radar this year. I’ll be honest I’m not really noticing her when I watch the FBs but then again that generally means a WD is doing her job!!
I would t be surprised to see Anstiss in the mix. Not saying I would select her.
I like your team Tully, very good cover across all positions too and I agree that Simpson has been under the radar. I think last year she got caught up in trying to protect the young defenders around her and at the same time lead a one woman crusade and go on the hunt which left her chasing and in no man’s land. This year shes tightened up and is picking her moments.
I have to agree that Simpson hasn’t been in great form and has gone under the radar a bit too much but it’s hard because I think it’s premature to put Eddy as a starting WD. but if JLP is at C then I understand that someone needs to be at WD that has played it a lot in the domestic season (preferably). I feel like the WD position is a bit less competitive than it has been in the past. Probably doesn’t help that; Brazil is out this season, Thunderbirds have an import WD (even though Nankivell has played a bit in WD), Swifts and Magpies don’t have a consistent performer at WD. And then Lightning have McAuliffe but she’s not there yet and neither is Anstiss in my opinion.
Starting seven:
GS: Koenen
GA: Wood
WA: Watson
C: Hadley
WD: Eddy
GD: Weston
GK: BruceBench: Proud, Bassett, Mannix, Austin, ?
Ideally I’d want a young shooter in the last bench spot (start getting them international experience before commonwealth games, etc.), so maybe Garbin if she improves on the shot?
Worry a bit about not having another strong WD option, but I think Hadley and Weston have both been good there during the season.
Regardless of people’s hotpicks, why does everyone push Moloney too much. She has failed the Vixens midcourt alot of times and she couldn’t stand up when it mattered when Watson got sidelined for the Vixens. She also crumbles under pressure and unfortunately she’s not like her old self years back even though she’s had some good games. She would not even make my midcourt for the Diamonds. PARMENTOR for the WD bib!!!!!! Hands down a player who is hungry for ball and is ready to give it her all.
I take it, that you really don’t like Moloney? 🤷♂️😂
Moloney is a good player, who is a defensive C. If she made the Diamonds, it would be to play WD.
GS Bassett
GA Wood
WA Watson
C JLP
WD Simpson
GD Weston
Gk BruceBench:
Austin
Koenen
Brandley
Moore
HadleyA mixture of experience, and youth. I’ve included Moore and Hadley because this season they’ve shown how versatile they are. JLP gets in the starting 7 because of the experience of the other starting 6 and I feel she’s the strongest C Australia have at the moment.
I really like Moore and think she’s a star of the future, but even at her peak earlier in the season I don’t really think she brought anything more than Eddy has done consistently week in week out. In a year or two maybe.
Versatility is not that important for a four match test series in my opinion. Players don’t need to be rested and realistically only about 10 of them will probably even take the court. Selecting squads for a tournament is very different from a series.
That is true but the Diamonds have done very well at winning Constellation Cup but not the Commonwealth Games or World Cup in recent years. Maybe if they select the test series team with a tournament in mind they will be able to build up combinations for the future?
