AUDIO – Australia’s Diamonds are World Cup champions for a 12th time. So why does netball continue to receive ‘the minority of coverage’?

On ABC774, or ABC Melbourne as it is now, there was a morning sports segment discussion on the Netball World Cup sliding under the radar when compared with the mass jumping on the bandwagon of the Women’s Soccer and the big media interest in the Matildas. The question being posed by those at this group talk session was why is netball effectively being ignored. However during the various musings and criticisms of the media there was never a mention of the fact that netball has disappeared behind a paywall for several years now. There would be many who followed netball on free to air TV, but once Suncorp Netball chased the dollars for many it just disappeared. The World Cup finals were shown live later at night on free to air TV and there were daytime replays, but unless you knew about them many would not be looking.

Because it’s a female sport. And frankly the Women’s Football team have been to every WC since it started in 1991, they haven’t ever made it past the Rd of 16. The fact that they are finally doing well is long over due.

Hopefully England win as they have a female coach, I fins it sad that so many teams have male coaches and some have all male coaching staff.

Peter C, soccer is usually behind a paywall here too. I don’t think that explains it entirely.

I’m confused why the Netball WC was organised to conflict with the soccer WC, that was not a good move from a publicity or timing perspective. I also don’t think the negative tone of media coverage linking everything netball in Australia back to Gina Rinehart has helped. There’s now a persistent negative tone to any commercial news reporting relating to the Diamonds and netball generally, which is frustrating. She has a lot of media sway.

That aside, netball being a “women’s sport” and being treated differently than women playing a conventionally male sport is an interesting thing to ponder.

The Netball WC was scheduled before the Football WC. And the clash of dates really shouldn’t be a issue.
The 2019 Netball WC was on the same time and in the same country as the 50 Over mens Cricket World Cup.
