in reply to: Firebirds set to bring Maria Folau back. #1337378
Of course you can have your beliefs but when you husband actively and very publicly makes comments that are extremely damaging and hurtful that is another thing entirely. This stuff came out right at the end of her SSN career.
in reply to: Firebirds set to bring Maria Folau back. #1337369Ugh, this seriously would be the worst PR move Firebirds could make. Love Maria as a player but the views of her husband (which she obviously supports) are horrendous. And what does that have to do with her playing netball? A whole lot IMO – netball is supposed to be an inclusive sport and to have someone that thought that I should burn in hell being part of my club?
What happens with Pride round? There is no way that this would work out well.
This is a good explanation https://www.dca.org.au/blog/israel-folau-why-words-matter “While clearly not all homophobic language leads to violence against LGBTIQ+ people, the genesis of that violence begins in anti-gay rhetoric”
And before anyone comes at me for being “anti-religion” I am not. I grew up in a very strong church going family etc etc.
Definitely agree – would have been a big weekend for some of the players who have had Covid recently. There’s also some good evidence coming out that returning to vigorous exercise too early afterwards can increase your risk of long Covid so that’s a worry too.
in reply to: NS PRESENTS: A Very Netty Christmas #1335160Lots of great ideas there!
I coached U13’s for a few years and so many of the girls were getting their periods for the first time and didn’t want to play in the dress as they were very self conscious. I had my own daughter in floods of tears before some games due to this. This is a crucial age to keep them engaged in the sport and often it’s something like uniform that stops them playing.
About time!! There is no reason for the archaic uniform rules that we have currently. Even some social comps I’ve seen have super rigid uniform rules. If you look at this pic in the article, if you were playing against them you wouldn’t even notice that they had variations because the tops are all the same.
This is a fantastic article. I hope that Gabby is able to get some opportunities next year and become a full time player. Still some hope possibly for Firebirds?
in reply to: 2022 SSN rumoured signings/speculation #1332592I will be absolutely shocked if Stanton gets a contract. I was last year as well and we know how that panned out. She is a good player but just not up to this level.
in reply to: 2022 SSN rumoured signings/speculation #1331957Surely ALJ wouldn’t be given another contract! She was very ordinary in the Uk league and just isn’t up to SSN standard. I think she was able to keep her spot in Lightning for a few years because she would have been one of the lower paid players.
I would love to see uniforms where there is a choice. Shorts and tshirt (which is identical to the design of the dress) would easily work. I’ve seen in the Uniting Church comp in Adelaide (which is huge) uniforms where long sleeves/tights as well as headscarves are part of the uniform. It doesn’t make an iota of difference to the opposition but means that girls from all backgrounds can play. I got emotional seeing it.
in reply to: 2022 SSN rumoured signings/speculation #1331821Either Austin or Dwyer need to move. I think Giants would want them both to stay but they are too good to be impact players. Being loyal to your club is ridiculous if you are world class quality but sitting on the bench. Ditto Garbin – yes it wonderful to play with friends etc but that loyalty just can’t be there if you want to further your career.
in reply to: 2022 SSN rumoured signings/speculation #1331734I can’t wait for some signings. I don’t think Stanton will get a contract with any club. She has had her chances and just isn’t up to this level. With borders still being closed I think Haythornthwaite & Francis-Bayman will go home to the UK. I also think it’s 50/50 whether Fowler will leave too. It’s a very different story from pre-Covid times where they could go back in the off season and also have family come and stay but being away from your partner or children would be extremely hard when you don’t know the next time you will see them.
in reply to: 2022 ANZP Confirmed signings #1331081I highly doubt it’s going to be Pitman. She didn’t want to leave her husband and step-daughter to play in the SSN last year so I don’t think NZ would be an option. She has just started a career as a police officer in Adelaide as well. I could see Madi Browne though.
in reply to: 2022 ANZP Confirmed signings #1331037Good to see Kayla Johnson back. I know she has had a baby but has she played at all since Swifts in 2019? I always thought she had such talent but often didn’t seem to live up to her potential.
in reply to: 2021 SSN PRELIM FINAL #1330791Giants can do this but can’t let up at all. Fever can score quickly and turn it around but haven’t been playing anywhere near their best.
Defence of Giants has been incredible.
