Ferns vs Roses – Interesting that Nweke has played 90% of the games. Without her the Ferns games would be much closer. No one is going to win a one on one jumping contest with Nweke except for Sterling. England had their chances. Far too many turnovers at crucial times. Metcalf seemed to be the weak link. Turned over the ball quite a bit. Cardwell not mobile enough. Housby had to do too much work running around.
I can see their young GD from the England side playing in the SSN.
Crowds looked very poor. In Oz, Nz or UK these games would be sold out. Such a shame. How come NZ never gets to host these tournaments?
Looking forward to the final. Should be close especially as Nweke seems to have the measure of Bruce and Klau.KwkiwiParticipantJanuary 24, 2023 at 7:30 pmPost count: 138
Nz and Australia look to be head and shoulders ahead of the other two teams. It’s a pity Jamaica isn’t there. As others said I didn’t think it worked with Jury out at GD, Steph Wood would be the top GA at the moment and too fast for Jury. Also Wilson didn’t work at GA. She has no long shot which is essential these days. Surprised that the Ferns got that close. I’m predicting they will both be in the final and I’d say Australia will get up again.

Strange substitutions by Marinkovich. I would have taken off Koenan, she seemed to be missing shots and turning the ball over. Also Bruce is better at Gk.
Toeava looked good again. Glad for her. I remember several commenters on here used to criticise her previous performances when she didn’t even get much court time. I guess she’s silenced those critics. The games in Australia could go either way. I’ve lost track of who’s playing in the squads.KwkiwiParticipantOctober 15, 2022 at 4:01 amPost count: 138
Can’t see Sharni getting anymore commentating gigs any time soon. Maybe she’s thinking of entering politics??
How daft is that, biting the hand that feeds you? Would like to know who the ringmaster is behind this.KwkiwiParticipantOctober 15, 2022 at 3:06 amPost count: 138
That’s an interesting article. As a New Zealander I wasn’t aware of the issues around this sponsorship deal. It’s basically a bail out package for an organisation in deep financial trouble. If the players reject that sponsor then it would have to be the government that ultimately props up the sport. That’s definitely what would happen in NZ. There are all sorts of implications for the future of the sport, player salaries etc if they reject this deal.KwkiwiParticipantOctober 14, 2022 at 3:57 amPost count: 138
Great game. Ferns surprised me at how well they played. Nweke and Toeva must be a shoe in for the World Cup playing like that if they can keep it up. Wilson will be very much a back up GS from now on in. The Diamonds missed Tippett and Weston big time. Especially Tippett. They need to try Dwyer and Garbin who are less likely to be blocked by Jury due their shooting style and height. I think you still need Wood in there as her long range shooting mixes it up.
Interesting to reflect on NZ having left the ssn and worries about how they would go. Just shows how crucial it is having a dominant, post up shooter. Which Nweke provides now. The Ferns looked good in all areas of the court. Will be interesting to see if they have the consistency to post good performances throughout this series or whether Taurua is using the series to try out multiple combinations.KwkiwiParticipantAugust 30, 2022 at 2:13 amPost count: 138
That’s ridiculous Dunn not being in either of those team lists. She was instrumental in the Pulse taking out the nz championship this year. She should be in over Wilson who is much less consistent.
I’d like to see Dunn take her game to the next level in the SSN after seemingly very poor treatment over the years by Taurua and the Nz selectors.
I’m far more interested in the upcoming series against Jamaica and Australia. That’s going to be more of a gauge of where NZ are at than the Comm Games.KwkiwiParticipantAugust 7, 2022 at 8:50 amPost count: 138
England got whistled out of the game, not that that’s why they lost. Can’t believe those two nz umpires let so much rough play go. They never do that in the NZ games. Particularly the male umpire who didn’t seem to be up to it. They seemed to call everything for Australia too. Ignoring the elbows and arm locks of Bruce on her opposite. Cardwell went flying a couple of times – and no whistle.
Can’t understand why Thirlby left off Housby for so long. She’s one of the best GA in the world at the moment, and left on the hobbled Harten.
Will be a great contest tommorrow between Bueta and Sterling. Be interesting to see if the Diamonds try lobbing those high balls into Bueta over Sterling.
I think it will come down to who keeps their composure. If it’s those two nz umpires again it’s going to come down to how they call the game as well.KwkiwiParticipantAugust 6, 2022 at 9:21 pmPost count: 138
Well done Jamaica. Complete performance there. As others have said choosing a team based on fitness and you get this outcome. Not that Watson and Eke would have stopped the carnage. It was a good old fashion hiding.
I thought Souness lacked punch through the middle, like what Langman used to give us. Karaka failed to contain Beckford. Fowler is a machine. Great to watch her and Sterling at the end of these games. They deserve to win tommorrow. But Australia may still take it out. (I’m picking an Aussie win in the second semi final). Oz may have less nerves. Would love to see Jamaica take it out.
NZ needs to get some of their players or teams into the SSN…

I think this statement in the Stuff site article by Taurua indicates her game plan and thinking ahead of the Jamaica-NZ semifinal. She had the advantage of knowing who the Ferns would end up playing against in the semis:
“I think playing in the Cadbury Series against the men, NZ A and mixed actually sets us up nicely for this [against Jamaica],” Taurua said.” ReferrIng to the height of the Jamaicans being similar to the mens height.
Anyway unless Jamaica come out flat I’m predicting a win to them against NZ. Rob Wright has clearly had an influence on their mental mindset. Usually they would have crumbled after losing a big lead. They didn’t against Australia. I also think Francis/Wright out coached Marinkovich. There didn’t seem to be enough subs in that game for Australia. I’m predicting a comfortable win to the diamonds against England.
I didn’t like Taurua’s selections from the start. Gordon would have been a much better option than Souness at C and Gordon is better at WD than Johnson. Souness played like she wasn’t used to C in the Jamaica game. It was like when Watson was made to play C at NWC. Also I would have taken Ekenasio along even if she wasn’t making the fitness standards. Or alternatively I would have not taken Mes and Wilson and taken Metuarau and Dunn as an option to Nweke and THSPR.
NWC isn’t the pinnacle event. It’s level with comm games. It’s all the same teams. Just hope we don’t get any statements like ‘ we knew we wouldn’t win, we were just practicing for the NWC…’
Anyway bring on the games tonight! I stand by my prediction Australia, Jamaica, England, NZ🤪KwkiwiParticipantAugust 5, 2022 at 6:18 pmPost count: 138
Sorry @nesian I normally agree with your comments but I beg to differ this time. If Taurua had been intent on winning the England game I think she would have settled on her strongest 7 and went with them instead of trying every combination under the sun in that game. There’s no way anyone would have been able to get any rhythm going doing 15 minute stints out there. I have a feeling Cardwell is going to find it pretty heavy going against the aussie defenders.
I do agree though that we are going to find out how good Jury, Fitzpatrick and Karaka really are going up against the likes of Fowler, not to mention how Nweke and Wilson fare against Sterling, who is one of my favourite players out there at the moment.

I think all those substitutions were deliberate by Taurua in the game against England. She knows Australia have the mental edge over the Ferns and would prefer to play Jamaica than oz in the semis. Not that Jamaica will be any easier.
Souness and Wilson playing out of position a bit of an experiment. Didn’t seem to work very well. Nweke did ok considering she’s so young. Was outrebounding Mentor. Johnson and Fitzpatrick too slow. Jury didn’t dominate like she does in the nz league.
Harten doesn’t look 100%. I’m predicting an Australia vs Jamaica final with Australia taking out the gold. The Diamonds won’t play like they did in the game against Jamaica. Enjoyed Neville’s commentary.KwkiwiParticipantAugust 4, 2022 at 9:52 pmPost count: 138
Amazing game. Would have been a bigger score line in Jamaica’s favour if they had converted some of their gains. No one will be able to stop Fowler at this tournament. It’s weird the way they put on two NZ umpires both who have a very pedantic style which the SSN players wouldn’t be used to. I thought Sterling had a couple of clean blocked shots. None of the 50-50 calls went jamaica’s way.
NZ aren’t going to come close to Jamaica or Australia. Hard to say if they will get up against England. England have a few weak spots but their shooting circle should dominate the ferns defenders especially as they are used to shooting the long shot from ssn.
