Don’t want to bang on but I will. LOL! The last Diamonds game CBass captained was the final game in the Constellation Cup in 2019. Oz won 53-46. Bassett scored 25 from 28. It was also her 100th international test. Not a bad result for a GS. So still not sure why some people think she wasn’t/isn’t a good captain. In 2019 she scored 492 goals for the Giants at 90% accuracy. She hasn’t had a decent run this year so not sure how anyone can decide she’s out of form. Just quietly, I think Julie F is out of form. Hey Ian H, I’m gobsmacked by your comment:
As I said, Bassett’s job should simply have been to score goals and lots of them, just like she was doing on a regular basis before she was made captain. It really doesn’t surprise me that her form has dipped since.
Are you seriously saying that she couldn’t possibly have shot goals well because she was made captain? Sorry, but that’s the most idiotic comment I’ve ever heard regarding a netball captain. Then again, maybe that’s why Jo Harten isn’t playing well. I mean, how can she possibly shoot goals when she has the responsibility of being a captain? Ergh. Liz Ellis would have a field day with this! Not to mention every other ‘Confident Girl’ who shoots goals.
Not sure I’ll follow this forum anymore. Truly gobsmacked.Mel QParticipantSeptember 7, 2020 at 12:37 pmPost count: 6
“Almost all of the best captains have been defenders or midcourters.”. Ian, I think that’s a strange comment to make. Mainly because I don’t think a GS or GA has ever captained Australia so how would you know what sort of captain a shooter would be (besides Bassett). Really, what difference does the position make? Do you think it was because Bassett was captain that we lost the World Cup? But we won the last one because a defender was captain? Sorry, but I’m really struggling with the logic here.Mel QParticipantSeptember 7, 2020 at 9:22 amPost count: 6
Hey Al_ex, why can’t a GS be a solid captain? What difference does the position make? Does that mean a GK can’t make a great captain (thinking Geitz, Bruce, Ellis…) It’s about leadership and passion. The players voted CBass so it can’t be a ‘wrong’ decision.
What is a wrong decision is for Giants to play the same shooters for 60 minutes. The team plays average for 10 minutes then bang on the super shots. This surely can’t be the game plan?
Why not stick with a solid shoot – ala Aitken, Fowler, Coenen, Potgeitzer, Nelson. Seems to be working well for them!Mel QParticipantSeptember 4, 2020 at 5:39 pmPost count: 6Mel QParticipantSeptember 4, 2020 at 8:55 amPost count: 6
I agree JR. Bassett was clearly challenged and trained well under Noeline T. She played with a generous GA, and amazing C and WA who knew how to feed her perfect balls. And she was dynamic under the post. As she is when she plays with Tippet. That duo is unstoppable. Since moving to Giants she’s struggled to play with Harten. Actually, she hasn’t struggled, Julie F hasn’t been able to train them to play well together. If CBass isn’t playing well at Giants it isn’t to do with her form and fitness. It’s the coaching. There doesn’t seem to be a plan when they take to the court. And now they play rubbish, then throw it to Harten to score some supershots to catch up. That isn’t a game plan. I hope Bassett moves to another team with a generous GA and passionate coach who can utilise her and challenge her. It’s heartbreaking to have one of this country’s greatest sportswomen sitting on the bike. Maybe she could go to (can’t believe I’m saying this) Magpies next year – team up with Medhurst again! :)
