Considering the Steel managed to play without JFR, Frew, Saunders and TPSR just two days after their van crashed, I have little sympathy for the Vixens…

I agree with all re Toeava. And there’s no shame in being such a player who excels at league level but doesn’t make a mark on the national team; I would put excellent players such as Gabi Simpson, Bulley and McMeniman in the same boat. Can’t think of many NZ examples due to lack of depth!

Gordon is handy for tournaments as she can start in all three midcourt positions, hence I’m not surprised that Noeline is pushing her so much.

I haven’t seen the game yet but I like the depth these series is building, considering who is missing. I think we can expect one or two important players to miss the CWG through injury or other reasons, so now is the time to blood newbies.

Do we think Jury is likely to make the CWGs? Her combination with Burger seems to be growing.

I’m not convinced it’ll be an issue for the Diamonds Maryann, as the Ferns won the last NWC with four shooters who primarily were playing GA at the time. The versatility might be hard to combat!

Oops – had Watson in there twice! But if Fakahokotau gets her fitness levels back, she could be in the mix as well.

Yep – think of the players this team was missing, Watson, Crampton, Ekenasio, Watson, Rore, Karaka, Mes with MSB and Kayla Johnson waiting in the wings.

Note NONE of the 12 game day quad yesterday featured in the World Cup grand final, which was only two years ago. This is a very experimental squad.

However, the margin and manner of the loss is concerning. The psychological implications for the English are huge, which the Ferns would want to nip in the bud…

I haven’t seem the game but Nweke is so young and needs more time. What a baptism of fire to come up against Geva for your debut! However if the Ferns can ease her into games, then hopefully she will be up to speed come CWG/NWC time. Toeava OTOH – would rather have Poi in there.

In the last couple of series, NZ has performed poorly in the second tests. Expect Metuarau to be targeted, and then Nweke/Toeava brought on court to save the game (a lot of pressure on a 19yo!)

Reading this article and the other article on this site (which are both well written), when talking about her 81% win rate, there seems to be this underlying implication that Lisa was somehow ‘wronged’ when she lost the Diamonds’ coaching gig.

    After all:
    – She coached a losing CWG side
    – She coached a losing World Cup side
    – The substitutions she made in the CWG final were chaotic, but no it was NZ’s fault for not giving them a tougher semi
    – It was arrogant to not play their strongest 7 against South Africa in the World Cup semi, which almost backfired!
    – She often mentioned the lack of caps between the Diamonds and Ferns at the World Cup, but she did preside over many caps exiting the side, such as Medhurst (which I think was too early), Geitz and Pettit

I say this as someone who thought it was a mistake to let her go! However, if anyone thinks she was ‘robbed’, I would say her continuing in that role was HIGHLY contestable. She often wanted to emulate the All Blacks – I don’t know if they would put up with two pinnacle losses either…

Looking at the list, there seems to be a reduction in the number of benchies – a lot of players have had regular starting spots either in the current sides or in the past. If this keeps up for a few years, and if the NNL resumes as a credible pathway, eventually the argument can be made for a two new teams.

      “Bench players”:

    STEEL
    Georgia Heffernan
    Saviour Tui (likely to start)
    Ali Wilshier
    Sarahpheinna Woulf (likely to start)

Happy for Rore but what a bewildering team – not a single player that plays WA! I guess they will have to push Kersten to WA but honestly this team makes no sense, unless Mes is expected to start there.

I think this speculation is fanciful, but could these last spots be filled by Haythornthwaite, Manu’a and Pretorious?

This year Stars were hogging all the shooters, now next year it will be defenders! Temu, Harrison, Johnson and Fowler all deserve starting spots – if only one of them would go down to the Magic…
