Absolutely gobsmacked the Swifts released that to the public! Didn’t Briony also go for the Diamonds gig? Very weird to have a league coach criticise the national coach so directly like that.
And no I don’t believe for a second the Swifts should feel aggrieved. Surely it would do wonders for their players to be involved with the national programme as much as possible.
But this, with the grumbling about the “rotating” leadership that wasn’t, all doesn’t seem to well in the Diamonds camp I’m sorry to say.museboyParticipantMarch 8, 2021 at 1:21 pmPost count: 101
I think both teams will have a lot to take away from this series. SM sticking with her shooters and defenders was a sign of the starting seven she wants at the CWG. Despite the quarantine, they only lost the decider by 2! Koenan had an exemplary series and cemented her place in the Diamonds 12. That said, I was a little bit puzzled by persisting with Bruce GD/Klau GK as that unit was well-beaten towards the end of games.
For Noelene, the series was the prove they can win against the Diamonds without Folau/Langman/Kopua. Box ticked. Now it’s time to prove they can win without other stalwarts such as Ekenasio and Watson. And appreciate that fightbacks but gee what is happening in those first quarters?museboyParticipantMarch 3, 2021 at 3:25 pmPost count: 101museboyParticipantMarch 3, 2021 at 9:58 amPost count: 101museboyParticipantMarch 3, 2021 at 7:29 amPost count: 101
I like that the Ferns absorbed the little runs from Australia and counteracted with a run of their own. That said, I think the Q4 Diamonds was the best line up so the Ferns would need to work on Bruce as she’s great at picking up ball outside the circle (a bit Kopua like). Glad Winders was able to prove me wrong however I think Kersten got worse as the match wore on – still very good but she seemed to get rattled by the physical marking and made a couple of poor decisions in the last Q. Also both Ferns shooters seemed to struggle from mid-range – hopefully this can lift as the series goes on.
I reckon Ekenasio will be rested tonight due to injury so we should see Mes at GA.museboyParticipantMarch 2, 2021 at 3:41 pmPost count: 101museboyParticipantMarch 2, 2021 at 9:56 amPost count: 101
Back in 2008 – Cox was coming off a career best season in the new ANZP however was injured for the first game vs NZ. Injuries wreaked havoc the rest of the shooters and Bevo is called into the squad as a last minute replacement. She’s also given the starting bib in her Diamonds debut. Many assumed the Ferns would take it out, but the Diamonds had other ideas and won the match with Bevo being Player of the Match.
Go forward to 2012 – the Ferns lose their captain Kopua to injury so they sat with the untested backline of de Bruin/Grant/Scarlett. Again, most tipped the Diamonds but the Ferns took out the first game in Melbourne.
This test reminds me of those – nearing the start of new cycles, with untested coaches and key players missing.
While on paper this is a 50/50 test series, I think the Ferns have more to lose and I think Wilson will take a few tests to settle against the Diamonds. Combined with a weakened defense line, Bassett having something to prove and no home crowd support, I expect the Diamonds to win by about 5 goals.museboyParticipantFebruary 24, 2021 at 8:38 amPost count: 101museboyParticipantFebruary 3, 2021 at 10:58 amPost count: 101museboyParticipantDecember 22, 2020 at 10:28 amPost count: 101museboyParticipantDecember 16, 2020 at 10:29 amPost count: 101museboyParticipantDecember 15, 2020 at 10:56 amPost count: 101
Yeah it would be for Fowler – as without her they’re not finals contenders.museboyParticipantDecember 1, 2020 at 10:13 amPost count: 101
al_ex – you said in another thread that the salary cap between NZ and Australia was only going to grow, yet you say here the Aus cap was always unsustainable?
I always thought the Super Shot was a sign of weakness and a lack of belief from Nine in the fundamental product. Netball Australia were ambitious however they have bitten off more they can chew. The Australian Federal Government also gave NA a bailout not long ago, which was also due to SSN not delivering financially as hoped. I want SSN to succeed but it amuses me that the broadcasters went on about the “world’s best competition” when they need to get their backyard in order first.
I also worry about the NZ deal, as Sky’s subscriber base is shrinking I understand.
