in reply to: Silver Ferns WC squad predictions #1360379
Yep, I wouldn’t be disappointed in that line-up either Baller
in reply to: Silver Ferns WC squad predictions #1360377Shooters: Nweke, Ekenasio, Wilson, TPSR
Midcourt: Crampton, Heffernan, MSB, Souness
Defence: Jury, Watson, Karaka, BurgerReserves: Malesala, Gordon, Fitzpatrick
I have always had Gordon in my 12, but think that Heffernan will be at C more than WD in the big games, with Souness backing up, which allows MSB to play WD. I’ve picked Fitzpatrick as the reserve D for what she brings off the court, as well as it’s Watson that would most likely need replacing so they need a GK.
I think that Metuarau has gone right off the boil over the past few games, after hitting some good form, so I’d bring in Malesala. She made a few errors in the first half in the elimination final, but once again stepped up when the pressure was on.
in reply to: Silver Ferns WC squad predictions #1359310Awesome that we have so many legitimate options.
Shooters – Nweke and Ekenasio are lock-ins. Personally I would also have Mes (form and combination with Ekenasio) and Wilson (Form and combination with Crampton), although I can understand why they’d go with Selby-Rickitt. It seems like a mix with TPSR in there, but instead of who? I’m not sure. Metuarau has got better as the season has gone on, but her dynamic movement still seems to be lacking.
Midcourt – I have changed my mind so many times over the past few weeks. Personally I would take Crampton, Gordon and Heffernan for sure. The last place goes to one of Toeava, Souness or Reulu-Buchanan. All three have absolute strengths and have a great combination with someone else in the squad (Toeava —> Nweke, Souness —> Gordon and MRB —> Crampton. For me, it’s probably Souness as a C/WA
Defence – Watson (if she is fit), Jury and Burger are definites. I assumed that Karaka would be the 4th ahead of Fitzpatrick (who’s off-court strengths are almost as important as her on-court prowess) but I liked how someone mentioned Sokolich-Beatson earlier and I quite like that idea.
They key is having a line-up that can nullify the Jamaican attack end (Heffernan, Burger, Watson, Jury) and one that can stop the Diamonds front line (Gordon, Heffernan, Burger, Watson).
Summary (if I was selecting)
Nweke, Mes, Ekenasio, Wilson
Crampton, Gordon, Heffernan, Souness
Burger, Jury, Watson, Karaka / MSBPlus – TPSR / Reulu-Buchanan / Fitzpatrick
Exciting times !
in reply to: NZ Comm Games Team #1346348Boy, that NZA team is looking strong!
Ekenasio, Hume, Metuarau, Vui
Kersten, Reuelu-Buchanan, Toeava, Winders
Burley, Fowler, Manu’a, Temuin reply to: Silver Ferns trialists #1346194I can see this being something close to the squad:
Shooters: Wilson, Mes, Metuarau, Selby-Rickitt (with Ekenasio and Nweke to not make the fitness standards)
Midcourt: Crampton, Saunders, Gordon, Poi (to trial amazingly well)
Defenders: Johnson, Karaka, Fitzpatrick, Jury (I personally wouldn’t have Johnson, but without Burger, you need a GD/WD slide, and without Sokolich-Beatson at the trials, it’s down to Johnson and Fowler).
Reserves: – Dunn, Winders, Manu’a
It is a tough squad to pick!

in reply to: Silver Ferns trialists #1346063While I do agree with the fitness standards to a degree, I feel like Taurua has backed herself into a corner with the constant reference to it in the media. Fitness is obviously crucial, but surely playing ability is more important. Will we end with the 4 fittest shooters, midcourters and defenders, but not the best with regards to ability and connections?
However, more concerning for me (if it is true) os that by being sick this past week rules you out of contention for the squad. If you have managed to play throughout the ANZ Premiership to a high standard then surely that speaks volumes as to your ability, and surely that’s more important than the 4 day camp (if you were too sick to make it).
I want to trust in Taurua, but some decision making leaves me baffled.
Maybe I should read the whole article
No Paris Lokotui or Binnian Hunt?
in reply to: 2022 ANZP Confirmed signings #1331387I think that is a really good point!
in reply to: 2022 ANZP Confirmed signings #1331079Madi Browne would be an incredible signing for the Magic. Possibly Pitman (has connections with Ekenasio from Firebirds and Pulse), or maybe Haythornthwaite (surplus to requirements at Swifts?)
in reply to: 2022 ANZP Confirmed signings #1331075Good team Steel have named… albeit a little underwhelming with recent movements. i was hoping for a fit Semple to fill that third shooting spot.
Disappointed to see Rore not playing next year, however I guess just look at Kayla Johnson, and Anna Harrison, so she may be back in the future. The teams are all looking pretty even and exciting for next year. Hoping for an international defender at the Pulse and an international WA at the Magic.

I wondered if they’d be interested in Lisa Alexander at the Pulse? She and Wai always had a great relationship when coaching the Ferns and Diamonds respectively.
Pure speculation on my behalf.
