in reply to: 2023 Constellation Cup (Oct) #1366108
Honestly surprised the ferns managed to stay with the diamonds and not let it balloon out too much.
I liked what I saw in patches from the ferns. While I mean the diamonds lost that first test by 10 too. Poor ekenasio needs a back up GA, otherwise she will be run ragged.
in reply to: Silver Ferns Squad for 2023/24 #1364615And there we go! To all the people doubting Walmsley being a SF so early. Now this doesn’t mean she’ll be picked for any upcoming squad, but having her there clearly
means they want to fast track. Again I doubt she’ll get the opportunity to play any test/ but it shows NNZ will try anything at this point.in reply to: Silver Ferns WC squad predictions #1364200Laughable and yet the ferns slump to their worst outing since 2018. Yes Maia had a great individual tournament, but we still lost and our middies couldn’t release that ball fast enough to her. Okay, your right, Walmsley was an overreaction- but I’m tired of this safe regime Noel’s plays at. She picked them for their “experience” and yet they came close to finishing 5th smh.
Yes Dunn, but I think she showed domestically why she hasn’t donned the black dress in 5 years.
Here’s the shooters that I see for the next cycle:
Nweke, Walmsley, Tiana, Williams, Wilson, Tūī, Samason*, Fisher*Samason, could be our answer for a GA, obviously she’d have to commit to nz. Fisher , even though she was named with the wider squad for England- she honestly has a better chance here in NZ, than staying with the roses and missing out on big tournaments. If Noel’s stays, she’s has shown interest in George.
in reply to: Silver Ferns WC squad predictions #1364195Unfortunately I don’t think they have a choice but to bring in Walmsley- our shooters rn are not up to scratch. Eke has lost her spark, and really needed Grace in there. Tiana has a great partnership with Walmsley at the pulse. She’s well supported if she has TP and Eke too. Maia, although I thought she had a decent tournament, there’s just something not quite really when she’s playing and we are suffering trying to make it work. ALL TEAMS had GA’s willing to shoot from range. Eke needs to work on that if she wants to remain Captain.
Enter Stythe and Beatson. With Crampton gone, Toeava is a guarantee, I’d really like to see Earle get a chance, but the next off the blocks is Mila.
Heffernan looked tired. I’d rest her.
IF Noel’s stays on, then there’s no way Walmsley will be picked. I’m still bagging on Fisher to switch, especially when she’ll be behind Cardwell, Tchine, and Housby. She basically gets a starting position should she become a Fern.
in reply to: 2023 WORLD CUP DAY 10 (FINALS DAY) #1364092Looks like SF are looking down the barrel of another 4th place finish. Sigh…
The reason we changed the coach was to make sure this was not a possibility, no matter how competitive the international scene got. Time for a shake up in the coaching ranks.
in reply to: 2023 WORLD CUP DAY 10 (FINALS DAY) #1364090So just some interesting stats:
This will be the 2nd time in a row NZL and AUS, or ENG and JAM, do not cross paths in a major tournament. A great thing for the sport, but it’s really NZ that are letting the other teams compete.
England will be the first team since 2011 to go unbeaten at a World Cup, should they win. Every winner since has lost at least one game. So Aussie have this stat in their favour.
NZ become the first defending champions, not to make a grand final, in a reverse of England at comm games last year.
First final since Birmingham 1995, not to feature NZ in the final. That’s 6 tournaments ago, of those 6, the diamonds have claimed 4.
Should England win, they’ll become just the 4th team in history to win the cup: Aus, NZL, and T&T.
in reply to: Silver Ferns WC squad predictions #1364061And yet these middies aren’t cutting it. Nweke is our GS for the foreseeable future might as well have Toeava there too, cause Crampton and Heffernan are too hesitant feeding her.
Noel’s will be gone after this campaign and a bronze will soften that blow. Let’s face it we desperately need someone like Rob Wright or Briony Akle on the coaching panel with someone like Yvette as head. Netball NZ need to get off their high horses and accept our coaches need to learn off the best. Talent breeds talent..
Depending on how long Nweke is out, they might need to fast track Walmsley or even risk it and get Fisher. Sorry but it’s needed. The attack is letting us down.

in reply to: 2023 WORLD CUP DAY 7 #1363642Look NZ get the “easier” semi- but the favor is heavily in Englands court.
I don’t see Aus beating jam on their current form. Both Aus and NZ have been very disappointing this tournament. I don’t understand Jury being at WD AT ALL.
in reply to: 2023 WORLD CUP DAY 2 #1362852I actually think that tight tussle for the ferns is what they needed. And it’s nice to see Uganda pushing for a higher rank.
Whilst I can see many criticise the score line, that NZ should have won that by more- I think this will pay dividends deeper into the tournament. I thought the attack was slick, again I think defence isn’t picking enough ball.
in reply to: New Zealand World Cup team #1360724@TB and that’s why we have Jury- and thank god she’s actually being picked due to form and not height. I’d still have Karaka in my starting 7, especially against Eng.
Re Toeava- I just get this uneasy feeling we’ve just lost the title. I get it, she needed more variety in her game, and a result doesn’t just rest on one players shoulders… BUT she’s the missing puzzle piece to Graces success. Crampton hesitates too much feeding her.
in reply to: Silver Ferns WC squad predictions #1360682That’s the most likely and safest choice for Noel’s.
I just think Peta is the key to unlocking Grace… so I’d still put her in ahead of Whitney. BUT Noel’s has invested too much time in Souness to not have her their.. so this is looking like the team to defend the title.
The reserves will be the interest takeaways for me

in reply to: Silver Ferns WC squad predictions #1359814I would have Poi- it only as a C-WD slide. She really isn’t a WA imo. And we have too many at this point.
I’d like to see Noel’s be brave and take just 3 shooters, but Maia’s stats are too strong to be ignored. I mean she has done it in the past, but Glasgow still haunts the ferns.
How about Manu’a ??? The defensive end seems a lock- but perhaps a reserve. I mean the pPulse aren’t up there for nothing (I don’t watch many Pulse games) Is her partnership with Jury a strong one?? It won them the title last year.
I’d go:
Nweke
Ekenasio (C)
TPSR
Wilson/MetuarauHeffernan
Gordon
Crampton
Toeava/ SounessBurger
jury
Watson
KarakaR: whoever doesn’t get those spots in mid and shooting end will be reserved plus Manu’a or Sulu, but she seems an injury risk.
Unfortunately fife Toeava, Crampton and Souness beat her in experience, and that’s what she always she’s to be building her teams around.in reply to: 2023 Pulse Pre-Season Tournament (Otaki) #1354514If Dunn has the blinder season she looks like she’s about to have, then- she might just displace Wilson from the World Cup squad- cause she really looking average lately
in reply to: 2022 Constellation Cup (Oct) #1351901Thank god we won those tests back home. Aside from that brain explosion of a third quarter- NZ should have won that game. As a shame. But it’s nice to see them so competitive against the aussies for once. I’ll take a drawn series over our history in the con cup.

in reply to: 2022 Constellation Cup (Oct) #1351452With 2 games in the bag- I think wednesdays match will be a rest one for Eke, Nweke, Souness. Karaka could also benefit with a rest. Especially Souness who wasn’t effective tonight, and I don’t blame her- she’s been the main C this whole year, in a position she hasn’t played in since her school years. Needs that recovery. Meels too, she’s was tiring quite a bit at the end. But the impact she’s had in that attack end since coming back is showing.
Maia and Tp need their turns now, and they can afford too.
As for Australia- I think their two ends need some work, but the circle pass defense was excellent, and honestly what kept them in this match. That’s a huge weak point of the ferns they need to exploit. Their missing a target down that attack end, Wallam is the only one I can see filling that- Konan no use against Jury.
I quite remember people here saying Nweke going to be “monstered” and overpowered by Klau and Bruce. Quite the reserve so far lol. There’s just no answers – Nweke absolutely dominating them. And both should know by now how to do that considering one plays on Wallace and the other on Fowler.
I’m sure Aussie will tie the series at home, probably even claim it. But it’s just nice to see for once the Ferns actually competing with the Diamond.
